Post Baby Hormonal Issues

Has anyone else had problems with breakouts after they've had a baby? I had almost perfect skin until after my baby was born. My little guy was born in July 07 and I have been breastfeeding, so my hormones haven't been completely back to normal. I had a miscarriage in January and I just started my period in May. (I was really enjoying not having a period!!!) Anyways, ever since I started my period back up, my face breaks out, and I almost feel like I have acne! It was rare for me to have 2 pimples on my face before. I also have tummy issues. Before baby, I would get terrible cramps (like contraction cramps!), have diareah (spelling?), and I lost a ton of weight. I am a consistant 115lbs, but I got down to 102 lbs when I was sick and only made it back up to 108 lbs when I first got pregnant. I have had my thyroid tested and I have been tested for celiac disease- both of which I was fine. While I was pregnant, I felt amazing. Not a single tummy issue!! Since I started my period, my tummy issues are back. So I feel like it is a hormonal issue that I am having with my skin and tummy. Any thoughts on that? Anyone else experienced similar issues? Any ideas on how to resolve my issues? I have tried Arbonne, Mary Kay, etc. products so I'm not interested in that kind of stuff.

What can I do next?

I started taking Omega 3 fish oils because I have high cholesterol and it really cleared up my skin. I would take at least 2000 mg a day, plus it is good for you heart!

Hi A.-
I agree with the person recommending the fish oil. You need lots of essential fatty acids to balance and stabalize your hormones. The hormones affect so many areas in your body including your skin. My whole family takes cod liver oil every day and I also take evening primrose oil or black currant seed oil. My favorite brand of the cod liver oil is Nordic Naturals and I take the liquid as it is more cost-effective and they have great flavors. You can find it at health food stores and Whole Foods as well as some chiropractic offices. Nordic Naturals is one of the top-rated brands for fatty acids. I would recommend the cod liver oil especially because it helps the brain and is perfect for breast-feeding moms. I am also breastfeeding and the production of the breastmilk can lower and deplete the moms fatty acids. So, if you don't supplement your diet with some you are probably depleted. In fact, it is the essential fatty acids in the breastmilk that is helping your baby's brain to develop the way that it should. I would also recommend a place called Cardin Chriopractic and Acupuncture in Overland Park. They have really helped my family. They take most insurances and would be able to check your hormone levels and give you nutritionally what you might be lacking from the pregnancy and nursing. They are really wonderful people so give them a try. ###-###-####

i'm sure you've thought of this, but have you tried birth control? it's great for stabilizing all kinds of hormonal issues, even emotional ones (as well as breakouts, cramps, etc). my troubles are almost ALWAYS stress related, so that's the first thing i thought of when you said tummy issues...stress makes my body go crazy. just my thoughts, hope it gets better for you!

I have the same skin problem after having my 4 yr old son. It's most definitely hormones. I never broke out and actually had very dry skin. Now my T-zone is a grease pit by the end of the day. I tried lots of products. My sister in law sent me some Arbonne products and I almost never break out now. I still get very oily but no break outs.

it's not that i hate it that you've had perfect skin or anything...lol. the proactive system works VERY well. there is a product at walmart called zapzyt w/ same active ingredients, works well also. i use bare minerals make up available @ ulta on 119th & strange line in olathe or online.
now, as far as the real problem goes... i dunno. i feel bad for you, what a terrible feeling, i'm sure. i hope someone else has something for you on that. good luck & god bless.

I struggle with the skin issues, myself. Brown spots, acne, my skin unable to determine whether it wants to be dry or oily! I am so NOT a "spa" type of person, but I found an incredible aesthetician (facials, peels, etc.) that does treatments that are different than traditional spa items. She's European and just does things a little different. Like I said, I had never had a treatment or facial before, but others that have gone to her say that she is "pain free" and the results are better than they've experienced.

She does some kind of hormone mask that cleared my skin up after one treatment. I know another girl who had pretty bad acne and after the acne mask treatment it was totally gone and has stayed gone. Something about cleansing the bacteria beneath the skin.

Anyhoo, I have heard from "seasoned" spa junkies that she's really cheap and good. Her spa is Irina's Secret and the phone is ###-###-#### and she's in South OP/Olathe border. She has a website: www.irinassecretdayspa.com

You HAVE to ask for the cool mist treatment: it's a machine that isn't used here in the US much because it's really expensive. But it's cool steam that smells soft and clean. OMG: it was amazing. It opens your pores for cleansing but isn't muggy like hot steam. It feels SOOOOOO good.
