I have a 3 yr old that is just not peeing. He is refusing to pee on the potty (he almost always does w/ me...he will for his dad and at school but me? forget it) and he is hardly going in his pull ups. There is an odor when he goes but it kinda smells like he is just sweaty...he has been playing outside all day every day. I give him water but he plays in most of it. I called his doctor today and they just said to watch it. He should have a "wet diaper every 12 hours". 12 hours????

He wears goodnites at night and this morning it was completely dry. He is not running any fever and is not complaining so do I just wait a day or two and see what happens?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the responses! I did put Cheerios in the potty and he went twice. My husband said since the heat has really started up that he is not peeing as much as he was so I guess it is ok. He is still not showing any signs of pain or fever. I'll stop worrying! Again, thanks!

A UTI is awfully painful! Especially when sitting on the toilet, cramping and a feeling of having to go all the time. I doubt he has a UTI. But definitely keep Record of how much he's taking in- drinking- and how many time he is using restroom. A dry diaper at night is nothing to be worried about unless it's out of the ordinary.

I would try to encourage him to drink more, and see if that changes anything. If it's hard to get him to drink, even ice pops might help a little. Sometimes just adding ice to a drink or giving a straw, if they don't usually get that, helps just because of the novelty.

Good luck =0)

I never really realized how many times my 4 yr old peed until she stopped using diapers. She is on apple juice, occasional chocolate milk and every now and then water. She usually just pees around 3xs a day sometimes only 2. Scared me! Pedi said its fine as long as its-yep every 12 hrs! Some people just don't have to pee alot. I think he is probably ok mom!

As the other responces indicate, a UTI is usually accompanied by severe pain, an inability to hold in urine, pain with urination, adn someitmes fever and other flu-like symptoms. So it is probably not a ITU. BUT it sounds like he is dehydrated if he is peeing so little. Give him water, juice, milk, popcycles, sports drinks, bascially whatever he will drink (of course plain water is best, but to get him interested in drinking more "fun" options can be more sucessful). Buy him his own water bottle and encourage him to drink from it when he is playing outside. And take him to the bathroom even if he says he doesn't need to go. I would sometimes give small treats or stickers to my kids just for trying. I have heard that putting some Cheerios in the toilet for aiming practice can be a fun way to get little boys to pee in the potty, I have only potty trained girls so I haven't done that one yet! Good luck!

My daughter has had two UTI's. When she has one and she pees, it hurts! She will squeeze my hand until it almost breaks just to pee. If he isn't showing any signs of pain, I wouldn't suspect a UTI. When everything is normal for her, she pees twice a day, usually.
