Possible Respitory Disease

My four month old has been diagnosed by a ped. GI with Acid reflux and has been on zantac since she was one month old. My problem is that her symptoms are getting worse and I feel like it could be something more than just reflux. She has forced spit up 5-6 times in between every feeding (large amounts), struggles at every feeding (formula fed Alumentium), she is constantly coughing and choking, she gasps for air making her eyes water and her face turn red, her cry has become forced and muted and almost gurgly (damaged vocals?), she started drooling a lot, she sleeps a lot, and she started to snore at night (never did before). I have voiced my concern to multiple Drs and all they do is up her zantac. She is in the 70/90th percentile for both height and weight so they seem to think she is fine. I am starting to think that the reflux has caused damage to her respitory system and want to know if anyone else has delt with anything like this? She is scheduled to see her GI again tomarrow but I feel like he doesn't listen to me and I want to go into the appointment well educated so I can get the best care.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The GI prescribed her prevacit. He thinks the Zantac is not working but he is not concerned with all the new symptoms. I am going to try the new meds and hope that they help. I also have talked to a chiropractor and I have been on the fence on whether or not I want to take her. I have heard a lot of mothers rave about how well it works for babies with reflux but my Ped. does not recommend it. I can't imagine that it would hurt or possibly make things any worse. I think the worst thing could be that I pay a lot of money and it doesn't work. Thanks for all the support.

If it's at all possible, I would ask to be referred to an allergist. I think the Alimentum still has some milk and soy in the formula (even though it's broken down). There are other formulas that an allergist can recommend, and your insurance may even cover it if the doctor writes a prescription for it. But it's important to find out if there is an allergy at play either to milk or soy or both, and the severity of it. If there is, an allergist can put you on the right path to avoid that allergen.
Take care and good luck with the doctor...

Is it possible that your feeding techniques are contributing to the reflux? Have you tried using a smaller nipple (slow flow) and feeding her only a few ounces at a time, and then burping (or even feeding her only a few ounces at a time and feeding more often e.g. 3 oz every 2 hours instead of 6 oz every 4)?

The acid from the reflux can cause irritation on the vocal cords that would explain the muted cry and coughing. It's unlikely to cause serious damage, but you can ask your ped to have a look (as he should anyways).
She is old enough to start teething as well, which might explain the drooling. The snoring could be a combination of both.

Last but not least it is cold season... so it may be totally unrelated to what's going on otherwise.

Write down all of your concerns and ask your doctor...good luck.

Hi M.,

Get her to a principled chiropractor as soon as possible. If you don't know one go to upcspine.com and find one in your area. I have seen reflux go away as quickly as two adjustments. The zantac is making it worse and causing the respiratory problems. She's bombarded with chemicals that is breaking down her immune system so her little body can't fight of the things it normally would.

If you want to take this further, you should detox your house as well as her little body. If you are interested in going that route, get back to me and I'll walk you through what I did. It was inexpensive the way I did it.

God bless!

i'm so sorry my daughter had reflux with none of the other things you're going through, atleast that oart will be gone in a few months when she starts to sit and crawl...i hope thats the only probem, but my daughter had bad reflux and couldn't keep weight on til 7 months, and never had any of those symptoms, she screamed in pain constantly, but was happy when spitting up and eating, hopefully you find out whats wrong. i;d take her to the er, if you're that worried, possibly a childrens one?

A close friend had several children w/severe reflux. She found that really propping them up - even in the crib - helped. She elevated the head of the crib by putting a few books under both legs and frequently her children napped in the bucket of a car seat or a swing. Being vertical instead of horizontal reduced anything that she might spit up from her stomach and then aspirate into her lungs.

Not sure if you're already doing this, but thought I'd pass it along.

I'm sorry. Nicky was a reflux baby...Zantac didn't work for him. I had to change my diet to make sure the stuff i was eating wouldn't hurt him.

sounds like you need to take her to another doctor...

the drooling could be teething....

the snoring in an infant? To me? Not good.

Take her to another pediatric GI and tell them what you have told us. I would NOT up the Zantac, it's only masking the problem, that's my take. While I agree with Zantac to help, unless you can find the cause of the reflux, all it is doing is making it worse really because her tiny little body doesn't know how to fight it without the aide of Zantac..

Yes, vocal chord damage can done due to excessive coughing and vomiting..the acid is nasty stuff.
