My 3 month old son who is breastfed has the strangest smelling poopy diapers. They smell like buttered popcorn. This is kind of gross, but they actually smell pretty good. We think it is so funny. Has anyone else had this with there child and do you know why it smells like that?
Funny responses girls! We went on a family vacation this weekend and we had all of our family smelling the buttered popcorn diapers. It was hilarious! I plan to ask our pediatrician at my sons 4 month checkup what the reason is it smells like popcorn. I don't personally think it is related to what I eat, because every single poopy diaper smells like this. We will continue to enjoy the wonderful smelling diapers for the next couple months:)

I have had three children and I did have a strange experience with my last. Her poop did not smell at all as long as I was only breastfeeding. As soon as I introduced solids, all bets were off, smelly!
I have found that exclusively breastfed babies don't tend to "stink" until they start solids.
Because he is breastfed it is from what ever you eat and drink so some thing you eat or drink is what makes his Bm smell like that .
That is exactly how breastfed baby poop smells - I have no idea why, and I actually don't know how formula fed poop smells, but until they start eating solid food poopy diapers are really not a big deal :-)
Oh yes! Buttered popcorn is EXACTLY what both of my kids poopy diapers would smell like a lot of times! I didn't tell my husband because he eats that stuff regularly... ;) it'll change (and become way more stinky) once solids come around. Enjoy the buttered popcorn while you got it!

its all in something you ate! :) but rest assured, this beats formula poop smell any day... that smells like rotting meat! :P :P so enjoy your popcorn! :)
Yep, that's the way it smells. We called our kiddos Mr/Mrs Butter Buns.
You are not the first I have heard who has had this experience :) Just wait until you start the solid foods...
Breastmilk poop smells way better than formula poop...not sure why, it just does!
My husband and I would frequently giggle when our little ones were at that age about the buttered popcorn entering the room. The scent dramatically changed when adding solids. I think its normal.

Isn't it great? I knew breastmilk poop wasn't as malodorous as "regular" poop, but I never expected it to smell GOOD...lol...gross!
Totally normal and, yes, formula/solid foods are a game changer. My daughter's poop was often reminiscent of unidentifiable baked goods...her gas too...lol.
That's exactly what they should smell like! Savor them before the solid-food poopies start!
Enjoy it while you can. Once they start eating 'people food' it's just going to smell like poop.
all 4 of my babes diapers smelled like popcorn too! enjoy it while it lasts LOL
We called it the buttered popcorn smell too. I can't wait for baby number 2 to smell that way! I suspect it's because the sweet milkfat is a lot like cow's butter. Not sure where the popcorn smell comes from tho.
I have noticed the exact same thing with my son who will be 12 weeks old on Monday. I have no idea why. I was taking Fenugreek to help increase my milk supply. Stress from returning to work dropped mine and I needed a little help to boost it. I thought maybe it was from that herb. I have stopped taking it so I guess we will see if that changes the smell. I am just glad I am not the only one with a movie theater butted child. HA HA HA
Breastfed baby poop just does kinda smell sweet. I really don't think it's related to what you eat either. But, as everyone else has pointed out, once you start solids, watch out! :)
