what do you moms do when your little ones cant poop?
my daughter will be 1 year old in a little over 2 weeks. It seems like since shes been eating more and more food shes having trouble going poop. yesterday was the 3rd day in a row that she hasn't pooped. She tries and the poop is right there, you can see it but it doesn't come out. The last time she did poop was Tuesday night and before that she had the same problem, went a few days without going, then Tuesday night she was trying and trying my fiancé had to spread her legs and hold them up in the air, and I swear to u what came out of her was huge! ( I kno TMI ) it was the biggest log of poop ive ever seen come out of such a small baby! .. my mother in law thinks that since shes eating so much food she shouldn't have formula at all anymore because it has iron in it and that's whats constipating her (we've been cutting way down on the formula as it is). My fiancé thinks shes eating too many different kinds of foods & that the only things I should be giving her are ones specifically made for babies (she loves food, she will eat anything you give her, she does eat the gerber trays of cut up fruits and veggies and the little meat sticks, but she also will at times eat what we are having for dinner, like the other night we had grilled chicken and corn and she had a little bit of both)
Is there anything I can do for her?? I just feel so terrible, I mean shes not cranky but when she does try to go and cant you can see that it bothers her.. I went to cvs one day last week and the only thing they had was a prune juice concentrate that u mix a little in their bottles twice a day but it doesn't seem to be helping. im thinking if she doesn't go today than tomorrow morning I will go up to babies r us and see if they have something better, my mom said I might have to give her a suppository.. if any one has any suggestions or ideas what could be causing it it would be very helpful, thanks in advance

What can I do next?

You could try giving her infant probiotics or give her 1 tsp of olive oil every day to help the food slide along a bit more easily.
More fiber is good but only if she's drinking more water to balance it - otherwise more fiber will make her even more constipated.
Some doctors are recommending 1 tbsp of Benefiber be given mixed in with juice for infant constipation.

I had to start giving my kids a little tiny bit if Miralax to help keep things moving and stay soft. The pediatrician had told me about that but I isn't do that until they were 2. At 1 I used to give my kids apple prune juice by Gerber. Thy come in small juice bottles in a 4 pack and I got them to drink some of that watered down. It did the trick very time. I went through the same thing you are with my last two kids. The prune juice seemed to be the best bet and didn't upset their tummy.

Increase water, veggies and fruit. Decrease carbs. If you can focus her diet on non-binding things it will help in the long run. Short term, ask your pedi for recommendations.

I would keep giving her regular food, just change what kinds of food you are giving her.

Focus on giving her mostly high-fiber fruits and vegetables. Applesauce is not good for constipation, but apple juice is. (I usually diluted my DD's...) If you give her toast or anything like that, go for whole-grain. Beans are also a good source of fiber. My DD never really ate 'baby food'. I pureed the healthy parts of whatever I was cooking for dinner that night, and that's what she got. When she was closer to 9-10 months, she was eating quite a bit of table food... honestly, table food is better for them than the stuff 'made' for babies. (so many preservatives and extra processing...)

I used to also do a stomach massage when my DD was plugged up. After a nice warm bath, lay her on her back, with her head away from you. Start on her right (your left) and rub in small clockwise circles in the area between her hips and her belly button, working your way to her left. Do that a few times, and it usually helps to get things moving. Only use about as much pressure as you would use when pushing on your eyelid.

Also, it may seem gross... but if the poop is RIGHT THERE, you can put a little Vaseline in the area...Kind of help it slide out.

Our son had the same problem. Our pediatrician had us do two things. Miralax every other day and when he was having trouble pushing it out, we had to use a baby suppository and let it melt a little bit and bend his legs up to his chest and rub his tummy. It would take about 10 minutes but he'd finally get it out.

I would call her doctor. Don't take her in, just talk to the nurse line. You'll get far better advice than what your mother, MIL and husband have to say. My kids were barely eating solids at that age so I'm not sure what to tell you, though it does seem to me like she's a little young for meat, which is hard for little tummies to digest. I would think she should be mostly eating veggies, fruits and grains at this point.

My daughter had constipation issues too and our pediatrician had us give Miralax. We had to give her a half capful a day, and after about 3-5 days she finally pooped. Call your doctor or nurse and ask them what to do. They also said Pear Juice is better than Prune Juice to help with constipation.

Good Luck!!!

When my granddaughter started eating more food, she had occasional problems with constipation.... little rabbit pellets is what we called them!

Anyway..... my daughter would give her some diluted juice..... pear juice or apple juice diluted about 50% seemed to help. She also gave her the baby applesauce with prunes in it....

Now, as it is hotter out, we frequently keep a bottle of diluted apple juice available for her... about 1 ounce apple juice and 3-4 ounces water.... that helps keep things nice and regular.

Aside from giving her more water and some juice, is she getting plenty of exercise? She may not be walking yet, but she can crawl and scoot, it helps to keep things moving through her system better. Place toys out of her reach so she has to work to get them, then move them again and again, roll a ball so she has to move to get it, things like that, you want her to move.

It's fine that she's eating what you eat, no need for "baby" foods. Here's a site that lays it all out, the whole site is full of great info on feeding your baby. And they themselves admit their guidelines are on the conservative side when compared with other's guidelines.

Call your doctor, he or she should be available even on the weekend to address your concerns. I know it's hard to see your little one go through this, my guy did as well. But more water and exercise helped lots.

Chia seeds in baked goods (and pancakes, waffles, smoothies) etc. We tried everything with one of ours and it was regularly sprinkling chia seeds into everything that finally worked. ...yes, he has a wonderfully balanced and nutritious diet of whole grains, fruit, veggies, beans and yes, he is hydrated.

You can buy them at Trader Joe's. They have made a world of difference for our little guy, who is now 3.

You need to talk to your pediatrician.

Your daughter should still be having at least 24 oz of formula a day. Just because they start eating table foods, and the need for formula decreases, she still needs formula. Even when you get the okay to move to cows milk, she will still need time to transition.

You can also try giving her some apple juice, some water, graham crackers to help move things along.

Warm orange juice.
Works every time.
Mine couldn't drink apple juice because they would instantly poop. So, if they needed to poop, any juice with apple in it solved that issue pretty quickly...

My daughter has been going through this since she was your daughter's age and she's 4 1/2. I hate to say it but it only gets worse. Get her to a GI. We give her mirilax in her milk. She eats very well but no matter what we do nothing worked/works. It only got worse as she got older. I was told it would get better when she was potty trained. WRONG. The pain and discomfort turned into fear and she'd hold it. NO matter how much mirilax she had it didn't matter. I found in dire situations, the LIQUID fleet kids suppositories worked the best, get them. She is now on exlax once a day and mirilax every morning. Knock on wood she has no more constipation problems, but I need to go for a follow up because we can't go on like this forever. Good luck

My son's constipation was never this bad but he did have some issues because of the iron in formula. My pediatrician had me give me give him Karo syrup mixed with water. It cleared him right out!

My daughter had awful constipation issues when she was 1 and after trying many things to no avail, my pediatrician recommended mixing 1 tablespoon of corn syrup into all her bottles. I was somewhat horrified by all the sugar but I did it anyway and it worked like a charm. We had to do this for many months and then slowly decreased to no corn syrup at all. My daughter is almost 5 now and one of the healthiest eaters I know - she doesn't like candy much and other than ice cream, doesn't like sweets. So I don't think all the corn syrup did her any harm.

When my little one was having these issues - ped recommended anything that started with p - pears, prunes, peas, etc. that helped a lot. Agree with other moms about giving her table foods - that's fine - the more variety she is exposed to, the better she'll be about eating. Ask your ped about moving to whole cows milk - we did that at 1.
Good luck.

Raisins worked for my kid. However, you really have to keep everything in balance. They need fat as well as fiber and complex carbs. If the child's whole diet is too low in fat, that will cause them to be bound up too. Instead of grilled chicken, how about crunchy baked chicken with the skin on. Just dip chicken legs in bread crumbs, put a little oil in the pan so it doesn't stick and bake it or you could just bake a whole chicken and let her eat the crispy skin. Children need a little fat in their diets. Also, make sure she gets enough exercise. Exercise helps to move stuff around in the intestines too.
