I have a 4 year old girl and within the last year, she has started having very LARGE stools and at times cries because it is so large it hurts to come out. She poops usually once a DAY and even when she doesnt cry because it hurts, it is still huge!! Sometimes i am amazed at how big it is, I mean she is only 4!! I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this before and if there was any advice? I might add that she is VERY hydrated, she would drink all day if you let her. thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After talking to her pediatrician, she reccommened the Miralax, so we started it last night and see how it goes! Hopefully it will do the trick! Thanks for all the advice

My six year old's poop is so large it stops up the toilet every time she goes. She really doesn't complain, however I am going to try thr Miralax.

I'd call her pediatrician to make sure all is OK. You can be hydrated, but it doesn't necessarily mean the consistency of the stools will be appropriate.

Our son can pass a boulder and be OK. He's also 4. Our 2 year-old daughter has struggled with constipation/encopresis (basically, fear of passing stools) for the past year.

Per our pediatrician, she has Miralax daily to help retrain her. She calls it poop powder. She must have missed a dose, and we struggled again this weekend until the Miralax kicked in late Sunday evening.

Your pediatrician may want to evaluate her to rule out any medical causes or GI issues.

Good luck! It's no fun watching your child struggle with something we all have to do daily.

I would talk to the pediatrician about possibly using some daily Miralax.

My son eats at least 5 fruits/veggie servings a day and still has super long poops. They aren't hard but they do still bother him. Dr. told us to give him Mirlax. She actually wrote a prescription for it and it's cheaper that way than buying it over the counter. It cost $20 for double the size you get at the store for that amount.

I can sympathize with your pain here. My son had issues with constipation as well. What I didn't realize is that sometimes too much water can cause this as well. You need to look at how much fruit and vegetables is she eating? Luckily my son loved prunes and still eats them even though he doesn't have this problem anymore. If she is not getting enough fiber in her diet then I would recommend a fiber bar or fiber powder that you can put into OJ or some other form of juice for her. I know kids can be picky and this might be what is causing her problems. I can recommend a very good natural fiber bar and fiber powder if you do need to go this route.

It might help to increase her fiber/veggie intake to soften her BMs.

My son had a similar issue and they make fiber gummy vitamins that I buy at Target. They help keep him regular and pain free without having to use a laxative. The vitamins are usually either with the kids medications or by the fiber supplements. They are made by Fleets and my kids love them.

I also give my son fiber gummys. He also gets one fiber bar a day. I get the kellogs brand and they have nine grams of fiber in each one. Hope this helps!

Hi, K. my sin is only 2 and for about the first year of his life he had really big poop. What I did was, I stopped giving him whole milk and started giving him 2% milk. Then I started giving him V8 Splash, you know the juice with a full serving of veggies and fruits. That combo is the only thing that has worked for my son. I have tried Karo syrup, prune juice, apple juice, you name it I have tried it. My cousin receives WIC and she said that they changed the children who get WIC to 2% milk because the whole milk was constipating the children. I dont get WIC so I did not know that but, i took her advice and so far it works and i am so happy. The V8 Splash really help to clean him out but does not make hime sick, it just keeps his bowels from packing and making his poop SO LARGE!

Good Luck!

My 4 year old has large poop, but she hasn't complained. She does drink lots of juice during the day and eats a variety of foods really well. Try drinking at least a glass of apple juice a day and maybe increasing his fruit intake. This might make it softer.

A little vaseline in/on her rectum will help a LOT. The vaseline with both ease the passage AND help prevent rips and tears. Just do your best to make it "normal" or fun, instead of traumatic.

My son was born with nearly adult sized intestines. Fine while he was on breastmilk and formula... but as soon as solids started... oy. ((This runs in my family, btw.)

By the age of 2 his poops were often 2+ inches in width... but his little rectum was still just a toddler sized rectum. I spent hours holding him and rocking him through his fear and pain.

Same problems with my 2 year old, and the pediatrician told us to use Myralax. We've since seen 3 more pediatricians and we in passing ask about the pooping problem and they also stated we should use Myralax. So far 4 out of 4 agree.

It's safe, non-addictive, over the counter, easy to take and your child can use it for as long as she needs to. This has worked safely on our 2 year old. Obviously you need to discuss this with your pediatrician.
