Poo That Smells like Diesel from a 15 Month Old

Hello mamas and dadas! I have a 15 month old little guy who had a stomach flu of some kind beginning two weeks ago. We thought the diareah was because of teething, but then we all got sick! So I know that being ill can wipe out their 'good bugs' in their gut so we have been proactive with kefir and yoghurt to help rebuild. He's had stinky poo before, but this is just awful! It really does smell like diesel. Our ped said just keep going with the probiotics and it will clear itself up. I am a bit concerned as we are going on 2 weeks with this. Anyone else had this issue? Perhaps he ate something outside? Parasite? I feel like I am being paranoid, but we never had poo like this from our older boy. Thoughts? His attitude has been good, despite working on more teeth. Appetite is good too. I am at a loss!

What can I do next?

Oh good greif....don't take that baby to the ER for smelly poo! I agree with your dr that you should just wait it out and keep giving him the probiotics to replenish the good bacteria. He just needs to get regulated again. As long as he is happy and eating well he'll be fine.

At some point, my daughter had something similar. It lasted for months. She's 20 months old now, and I don't remember when it started or stopped. I guess that's a good thing. She has always had really weird poo, though. Very liquidy as a breastfed infant, then the smell thing, then really, really hard poo. And she seems to be pretty darn healthy.

Yes, It is a homeopathic issue not a MD issue. You live in Seattle and can find a really experienced homepathic pediatrician for your children. Do so. You will have little illness. What is coming out of your baby is a kind of pollution in his body that was most likely in his liver. However, it can be in his muscles as well. So off to the homeopath with you.

L.,
The chance of him having a parasite is very small. It takes 4-6 weeks for our bodies to repopulate our good bacteria. Was he on antibiotics? If not, the probiotics may actually be shifting what kind of bacteria is in his gut. As long as he is eating and generally acting well, I wouldn't worry about it. Poo has a huge variety of smells based on diet and bacteria population. No one's poo smells quite like anyone elses. Did you know that some people have bacteria that produce methane as a by-product and some people don't? That's why some people can light their farts and others can't! There's your dose of disgusting trivia for the month.
