Check out the family days at Arlington Park. There are free pony rides for the kids, a petting zoo, and usually some sort of concert or activity. Kids are free and admission for adults is relatively inexpensive.

We've found that Memorial Day (the actual day) and July 4 are both good days to go to the zoo (Brookfield, in particular). Since everyone is doing barbeque's and family gatherings, not as many as going to the zoo and it is surprisingly uncrowded.

Janesway Farms in Bartlett lets you walk your child around a path on a horse, if I'm remembering right. You could call them to see if they still do it. Lots of horses there to pet as well. It's located just southwest of the intersection of Army Trail Road and Route 59. Probably about 20 minutes from you, depending on where you are in Schaumburg.

I am not from that area, but did you try googling family activities in your area? I know Colorado has quite a few sites that list activities and some even break it down by the target age group.

Good Luck

Every time I've visited http://www.dtpd.org/pages/ro_park.html (Randall Oaks zoo and barnyard), there has been pony rides.
