Poly Vi Sol

Our newborn wants nothing to do with the Poly Vi Sol vitamins recommended by the hospital; I feel really bad forcing him to take them even though I know he needs them. Does anyone have a trick to making these go down a bit easier, or perhaps a different vitamin D supplement that newborns (exclusively breastfed) tend to accept a bit better? The only thing that seems to help at this point is quickly giving him the supplement and then breastfeeding him to 'wash it all down'... at least he doesn't throw them up this way!!

Note: I am not just blindly following the advice of the hospital without good reason: the supplement is recommended in order for him (and all exclusively breastfed babies who live in the northern states) to get enough Vitamin D as the winter months are approaching and breastfed babies don't get as much vitamin D as formula fed babies due to a decrease in sunlight during the day.

What can I do next?

Poly-vi-sol tastes bad. I always used a syringe to squirt in the back of his mouth and then put him to breast or bottle, whichever you prefer. Vit D is now the recommendation for all breast fed babies. If the mother is deficient or low levels of Vit D she will have very inadequate levels of Vit D in the breast milk. Most of us are in that category. Since we are better at covering up from the sun, using sun screen etc, Vitamin D deficiency is very common.

Why are you giving him supplement? What do they feel he needs? Why don't you increase YOUR intake of these vitamins and then he will get them thru your milk? Make sure you are taking a REAL vitamin- one with much higher then a 10% absorbtion rate! Talk to your local Health food store, and check out www.oligofructosecomplex.net for info on absorbtion. I can feel the difference with the oligo- so I KNOW my body is getting it- thus passing it on to my son.

Update to my answer: Many of North americans are deficient in MANY vitamins and unfortunately commercial 'one a days' have fooled many into thinking that they are doing something good, when really they should are just throwing away $. Money that could be buying them better food, or better vitamins. My Dr also recommended Vit D, not because she had checked my levels or the babys levels- but because it is just 'standard'. Well my life isn't standard and she had no way of knowing that I take 2 Tbsp of cod liver oil each morning, and I also make sure my children get sunlight each day. (well, that there is sun) As well as make sure I am taking the best suppliment on the market to ensure that my child is getting what he needs. So if a mother isn't doing all of this- then yes, I agree she may need to suppliment her childs Vit. D and then find a good way to make him take it. I was simply sharing my way of supplimenting my childrens Vit. D. :)

Have you tasted the stuff...its GROSS! Lynn and Beth many pediatricians recommend the vitamin D supplement for exclusively breastfed babies because so many people in our country are vitamin D deficient. If you are having a lot of difficulty giving it or don't want to give it discuss with your ob and your pediatrician what you take for a supplement.

You could also try D-Vi-sol which is only Vit. D. My baby had no problem with taking it. Have you tried putting the syringe in his mouth while he nursing, and squeezing it slowly, so hw won't notice so much? Good Luck!

I agree w/ Beth. Those vitamins are nasty and if you are getting all the vitamins you need for a lactating woman, then your child should be getting all that he needs. Oligo is the way to go. That is what I take and love the difference they have made.

I used a supplement called Just D by Sunlight Vitamins that was recommended by my pediatrician to use if my infant at the time rejected the flavored Poly Vi Sol type stuff. It's just corn oil and vitamin D3, and my son would take it without blinking. It's OTC, but I don't think they have it had regular stores. I would get it at the pharmacy connected to the doctor's office. You could also check out the supplement section at a coop for less foul tasting vitamins than the Poly Vi.

Can you squeeze the tube next to your nipple while breastfeeding? I know breastfeeding 'training' happens like this with other tubes, so maybe this would work?

Polyvisol, tastes yucky... even for an adult. Have you ever tried tasting it???
I exclusively breastfed too, and had that liquid vitamin. I just squirted it in my kids' mouths.
