My soon to be 5 month old started having a big decrees in her eating habits around the beginning of her 4th month. She seems her normal happy self, and even looks thicker to me, but she is only taking three 8oz bottles a day. I put cereal in them, so I don't know if the cereal is just keeping her fuller longer, but I am a bit concern because before turning 4 months she used to eat about 5 to 7oz every 3 hours and she'd wake up at night to eat, now she sleeps through the whole night. She used to be on time every 3 hours, anybody else experiencing the same thing? I have spoke to her doctor about it? & Will be taking her to see her doctor to see what he tells me, but in the mean time I wanted some other opinions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I spoke to her doctor, and she told me I basically was giving her, her meals in three big ones, like a grown up. but since I was putting 8oz in her bottles, & then adding the cereal she has still been getting proper nutrition, & that is why she has gotten so thick still, but since she is turning five months in a week, I will be spoon feeding her cereal from now on, so she can get used to spoon feeding & ready for baby food. Over all though the doc. said she is doing just fine, & is even advance for having been born three weeks early. . . A big thanks to all for your replies, all were very helpful.

The cereal is making her fat. She doesn't need it. She is not getting enough nutrients now since she's filling up on cereal. I think it's probably plugging her up inside too so she feels full all the time.

Formula and breast milk should be their first food and only food until they are older than this. Baby food and cereal are only fillers, they are ONLY for teaching a child to chew and swallow, they are NOT for nutrition. They are empty food. Flavored goo. NOT for food.

So by giving her cereal you are keeping her from getting nutrients she needs to grow and develop her brain.

Putting cereal in bottles is not good.
Take it out of the bottle and spoon feed some and formula/BM the rest of the time.

I would take the cereal out of the bottle. Spoon feed it to her. I would give her bottle and then cereal. Formula is more important than the cereal.

Take the cereal out of her bottle. It has significantly less nutritional value, so you are filling her up with empty calories. She NEEDS the formula at this age, but she does not need cereal. Tons of people think that their babies will sleep better at night if they have cereal in their bottles - but every single research study done shows that it doesn't work. Babies start to sleep through the night anyway, and parents think it's the cereal... but it's really just a developmental stage. So really - take the cereal out. She'll drink more formula and will be healthier overall.

Sleeping through the night is fantastic. I wish my 6 year old would do that regularly. Her growth may be changing, as she did a LOT of growing that first few months. She's still growing, of course, but differently. You probably have a baby well visit coming up soon where they will weigh her and chech her growth. You can ask then, or you could call your pedi just to be safe.

Also, find the book "what to expect the first year" - lots of good info on baby development.
