What are good supplements for PMS, natural ones that are safe and proven to relieve, the bloating, crabbiness and all that not so fun stuff?
I don't want to take anything random, something that is proven to work. The week before my period I am so emotional, grumpy, short tempered and bloated! :)
Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW hot topic! I think I like the chocolate relief one, that sounds my speed.
I am not into "products" that are not FDA regulated, so that opts out a lot of these methods. I have heard of the Vitamin B theory and will give that a try. St Johns Wart can have negative side effects so that isn't an option. I would just like something nature made, that isn't a "product for sale" type thing, like certain foods that help, vitamins and so on. Thanks all so much. I drink a lot of green tea, walk a lot and am active. Just the ten days to seven days prior to my period, lordy, I have no patience, can cry at some of the silliest things and just all together feel bloated and grumpy on and off. It is a lot better then it was in my teens and twenties believe it or not!
Thanks all! I will try the vitamins, get sleep and chocolate!! :)

I have been drinking MonaVie since November of 2006. It's an antioxidant fruit juice that contains the Acai Berry (the number one anti-inflammatory & antioxidant) plus 18 other fruits and berries. It's a liquid so it absorbs quickly into your cells. I have not had PMS for over a year. My friends and family who drink the juice have similar experiences. I just started my period yesterday and I had absolutely no prior symptoms during the preceding week. I used to be miserable but now I am excited because I feel GREAT! I would suggest a herbal company called Mountain Meadow Herbs. I use their Adrenal-Aid when I am PMSing since it is for stress and it works great for me. They also have special blends just for women and their issues. I have bought several times and loved them. I much rather prefer the herbal way compared to OTC-pills like tylenol, etc. their website is www.mountainmeadowherbs.com

Evening Primrose Oil!!!! Virtually cured me of all of those yucky PMS symptoms.

Or go see a doctor of Chinese Medicine who specializes in ob-gyn. If you're having very dramatic PMS, your body is screaming for help and telling you it is out of balance. PMS is NOT a normal state for a balanced, healthy female body.

Good luck!

I use Estraval. Which is sold by Melaleuca. It has Dried Soy Extract,Dried Dong Quai Extract, Dried Black Cohosh Extract in it. It is for Menopause but it helps with PMS and PMDD. I only use it once a day a week before my period and during my period so a bottle lasts me a while. It helps me with my moodiness and other lovely PMS feelings. Melaleuca's phone number is 1-800-282-3000. Hope this helps.

Dear D.,

Please take a look at http://www.sozomax.com/muratgun. This is not a PMS supplement specifically, but so much more!! If you go to the site, there is an interview with a Doctor Keller. Listen to this interview. This is a proven supplement, because I know a lot of people personally that are taking right now and their lives have changed. I have started taking it a week a go, because I have seen these people change that I know. My mother and father are 2 of them. It is a newly pharmaceutical patented way to glutathione into you system that is so critical to cellular function. Your PMS is a result of other things being out of whack. Please check it out at the least. It is worth the read!

Blessings,

D.,............research study

Calcium and Vitamin D Help Reduce PMS Symptoms
According to a new study published Monday, June 14, 2005 in the Archives of Internal
Medicine (2005; 165:1246-1252), a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D may help reduce
the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or prevent the condition altogether.
PMS is estimated to be found in 8 percent to 20 percent of women. The study was
conducted at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Harvard Medical School and
other affiliations and part of the large, long-running Nurses Health Study.
The study compared the diets of 1,057 women, ages 27-44 diagnosed with PMS to a
similar group of women nurses who did not have PMS. Food frequency questionnaires
and other health surveys were analyzed over a 10-year period. Women with intakes
corresponding to approximately 1,200 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D had
significantly reduced symptoms of PMS. The authors quote, “Our findings, together with
those from several small randomized trials that found calcium supplements to be effective
in treating PMS, suggest that a high intake of calcium and vitamin D may reduce the risk
of PMS.”
This study and others suggest additional benefits of Life Force’s OsteoProCare. In fact,
the calcium amount of 1,200 mg per serving is identical to those found in the study of
daily calcium intake. OsteoProCare has 200 IU vitamin D per serving and is formulated
with this amount to account for other dietary sources and sunlight.

Hi D.,

The reason I'm in the business I'm in is because of the results I had w/ PMS and these products. I had terrible PMS, to the point where I felt suicidal right before my cycle each month. I was diagnosed w/ bipolar disorder and didn't want to go on meds (especially since I knew it was directly related to my menstrual cycle). Anyway, I was introduced to Body Balance and OsteoProCare by a woman who used to have the same symptoms I was experiencing. I started taking the products and w/in a month my symptoms were gone. I've been on the products for over 5 years now and have not experienced PMS or depression since. I love this stuff!!! The OsteoProCare is AMAZING for anything hormonal or stress related (PMS and menapause)... there's a woman in my company who has done case studies on the benefits w/ menapausal women, etc. Anyway, you can try these products risk-free... the company offers a 45-day money-back guarantee. Check out the products here: http://www.LifeForceSuccess.com and please let me know if you have any questions.

Best of luck to you!

It depends how old you are. as you get closer to 40, some of those PMS symptoms are signs of perimenopause. A great supplement for that is Arbonne hormone cream. It's all natural, but helps boost your own progesterone and takes away most of the symptoms.

I'm a big fan of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. You can get them naturally by eating more wild salmon but NOW makes a good, affordable supplement that you can find in most vitamin stores. Omega-3's are natural anti-inflammatories and also have feel-good brain stuff in them. Good stuff!

Hi D., I saw something on the news the other night that sounds like a winner to me. A chunk of chocolate and a handful of peanuts do something to relieve PMS. I didn't see the whole segment, but you can google it and find out what exactly it does. If nothing, at least you can take care of the sweet tooth.

My mom took St. John's wort.

I drink lots of water and brush my teeth an extra time. (I'm not sure how the teeth thing helps, but it helped with my moodiness when I was pregnant so I held on to it afterwards.)

And Melaleuca has a great product, but I always forget to take any of my supplements. It works when I remember to use it!

Also, my husband gets touchy exactly the same time I do, so just recognizing that I'm losing it can help me keep my head, while I'm wondering why he's so moody. I feed him more water, too. It doesn't help as much, though.

Hi D.,

When I take a mix of vitamin Bs the week before my period, I don't get near the moodiness that I get if I forget.

Another thing you should know is that tampons have bleach! Isn't that awful? If you buy tampons from a health food store, you will notice that your period gets lighter each month and the cramping and bloatedness is reduced. It seems more expensive at first because the organic tampons cost more, but after you use the organic ones for a while, you will use fewer and fewer tampons per month and may actually save money!

I wrote a book explaining this and other health tips. It's called Shopper's Guide to Healthy Living, available on www.Amazon.com or at some local book stores.

Hi D.,
I was actually in a seminar today about that topic.
Bio-identical hormones are fantastic, but costly. Progesterone cream, possibly iodine, if you are low, and fish oils. (Omega 3 and 6).
I have all of the notes I can email to you if you would like to see them.

Best of luck to you!

I 100% agree with Gail. I started taking a calcium with vit D supplement about 12 years ago and the only time I suffer from PMS is when I quit for a couple of weeks (bad and stupid move on my part and I got right back on!) It has to be calcium carbonate to be absorbed correctly. Like what is in Tums. I take mine every morning and I can't even tell when my period is coming without a calendar! I used to have PMS so bad I had to skip work and/or lay doubled over on the couch. Now? Nothing! Remember: calcium carbnonate with vitamin D (helps absorbtion). Also note that you may need some magnesium or you may become constipated from too much calcium. This type of calcium is available pretty much anywhere. It does take 2-3 months for the symptoms to be gone, but in the meantime you're building stronger bones. Good luck.

HI D.,

I've had lots of luck with some herbal products. Check out www.herbdoc.com or call 1-800-herb-doc for a free catalog.

Dr. Schulze has some Female formulas to help with PMS. I don't sell these products or anything like that. I just love every one I've tried and feel confident in the purity of the products. They are made of 100% pure organic, wild harvested herbs. Not sure I can say the same for herbal products from the store. I hope this helps. God bless your search for answers!!

There are lots of wonderful natural remedies women can use for those PMS symptoms. If you are open to using herbal remedies combinations can be chosen that are specific for your unique body. One of the most well known herbs for PMS is Vitex. And emotional supporters that help can be Scullcap, lemon balm and chamomile.

Hi,
PMSs definitely not fun. Have you tried acupuncture? I am an acupuncturist in Boulder and work with PMS all the time. Acupuncture can really help. In chinese medicine, PMS can be caused from many different reasons. As an acupuncturist, I look into your total health history and figure out where your imbalances lie and restore harmony back to your body. I also work with nutrition and herbs. There are many herbal formulas that can really stop PMS. It is hard to say which one would be best for you without getting more information. In general reducing coffee and alcohol intake can help. A formula called Free and easy wanderer can often help too, but like I said you can get a lot more specific to your precise symptom picture with a more thourough intake.
If I can help you further please call, ###-###-####. As always, I offer 50% a free initial intake and treatment.
