Hi,

My daughter is 12 and a plus size. Clothing is expensive and VERY hard to find. Does anyone know of a store that has half/plus size modern girls "tween" clothing that is less expensive? I have three kids and only one needs specialty clothes, but I don't want her to feel left out because I can't afford or find anything in her style and age group.

Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all who responded! I have gotten lucky with some of the sources (Dots, Pennys) you supplied. However, the best place I have found is a catalog (online www.alloy.com) source called Alloy. The clothing is more of a Junior's style and size, however they have in style clothes that do not make a 12 year old look more like 18, great selection on sizes and "A-Line" shirts that do not "cling" to her making her look larger than she is. If you shop the clearance section, you can get some great buys with shirts under $10 and made well. We received our shipment yesterday (only ordered it two days previous) and paid regular shipping) and they fit perfect and look great. The best part is my little girl is smiling again!

Sears has 1/2 sized clothes for girls and they are fabulous. They look like the regular sized clothes including Hannah Montana, Cheetah Girls and High School Musical. I have also been told by others that JC Penny has the same things. The prices are comparable to the regular sized clothes too. I hope this helps

Try Walmart. They are affordable. I only wish I had a WalMart growing up. That was 20 years ago. Kohls is pretty afforadable too when they have sales going on.

Hi..JcPenny's has a nice selection of Plus size clothes for girls. It is large and has the same styles as reg sizes, they have a whole section. The new JcPenny on Orchard has a decent selection as does Yorkville. Also, Land's End website in the overstock section can have decent prices. Hope this helps.

It depends what you consider expensive. If $15 is the most you can afford for a top, head to Kohl's, Walmart, Target, or try resale shops like Plato's Closet. There, you can get brand name clothes for a fraction of the regular price. I don't know if they sell plus size clothing though, they ought to be. But if you're willing to spend $20-$49 for a top, try American Eagle, Old Navy, Justice, Gap, DEB, and dELiA*s. Aeropostale has plus sizes, but their sizes are tiny, so I don't know how their plus sizes will turn out to be. Maybe regular sizes? Lolz

I have to agree with JC Penny (they actually go up to 20.5) and Sears. Also Old Navy online. Another option, measure her and compare her to Jr sizes. My not so little girl is nearly 8 and a size 16.5. My last clothes shopping trip with my daughter we had a lot better luck in the Jr's section than we ever would have had in the girls section (of walmart no less!) Have her try things on too! My daughter was a size 11 in one set of shorts and 13 in another. Large in one style shirt and medium in another.. They're a tad long on her but she still looks adorable. Its tough! Don't give up!

Thanks to the other ladies for suggesting Deb... I hadn't thought of them before!

JC Penny has a line of clothing sepcifically for plus-size girls. I don't know how expensive they are, but JC Penny usually has some really good sales if you check the Sunday sales papers.

My sister in law had the same issue with my niece and she always mentioned shopping at Rainbow or DOTS. It's very affordable clothing and trendy for your 12 year old.

Try Fashion Bug. The store is divided into "regular size" and "plus size" and they have a lot of cute clothes that would probably be appropriate for her age. Plus, if you open a charge card, you'll get a percentage off your purchase and they'll start mailing you coupons/certificates. Just yesterday I receved two certificates for June, each was $10 off a purchase of $10. I don't know where you live, but if you have one nearby, check it out.

Try CATO stores, half the store is regular sizes and other half plus size. They really have great prices and styles.
I have went there for several years now. They also have undergarments and P.J.'s. If you can visit one in your area the clearance racks you cannot beat. They are also online.

Sometimes we find things and Kohl's and Penney's. Don't you just hate that clothes are all made for "stick children?" My older daughter always fit into those, but my 10-year-old doesn't, and it is very very hard to find her clothes that fit nicely and are what she likes. I have purchased some jeans at Limited Too. They have half sizes which are more for girls like ours. But they are expensive. They do last though. Also, Gap has some pants and jeans that are stretch and some have expandable waistbands. I have bought my daughter capris at Gap (adult not Gap Kids) and they fit fine. When I buy her jeans from there, though, we have to have about a foot cut off the bottom. We are always hemming jeans. Good luck! I'm waiting to see other responses because I could use some ideas too.

Lane Bryant and Torrid have really nice things in plus size.
Watch for the sales at Lane Bryant as they can be expensive. Every month they have a Friends and Family Sale that is 40% off. If you register with them you will get coupons constantly. Lots of cute instyle things.
Torrid we have mostly done online as they don't have alot
of stores.

Hi M.. I read your letter and just had to respond as I also have this problem with my daughter who is 13. She wants to wear all the Hollister, Ambercrombie clothes but they only make clothes for stick girls. Even the large is super small and they don't make ex-large. I just heard that you are considered a plus size if you are a size 8 or higher now. What is wrong with society? No wonder girls have eating disorders.
Anyway the stores I have had the best luck with are Sears, Penneys, Torried and sometimes Kohl's. But again by age 12 the girls like what everyone else is wearing which is amercrombie and Hollister and they just mdon;t make clothes for heavier girls. It's a shame. Good Luck
