I am researching preschools for my DD who will be 3 in the fall. I have appointments with Merrihill & Wishing Well Discovery Center. Any others I should check out?

What can I do next?

Hi A.--My daughter went to Wishing Well Discovery Center (Roseville), and we LOVED it!! The teachers are excellent, the director is great. It was a great first school experience for my daughter. My daughter is now in kindergarten and still talks about her teachers at Wishing Well. I have my son signed up to go next fall! Good Luck, this is a hard dicision!

I would recommend checking out ChildTime on Pleasant Grove and Foothills. My son has been going there for over a year and I have been more than pleased with the staff and their program. I cannot say enough good things about this site. I believe it's worth it to see if they're a good fit for you and your daughter. Good luck!

Hi A.,

As a retired owner/teacher of a preschool for over 20 years. (I privately consult with preschool centers/and large home day cares now) I can honestly say that some large home preschool actually offer a better of everything; small learning enviroment, academic choices, small loving groups. I know that I repeated myself twice, but the importance of the children received eye contact, feeling special to their teacher should not go understated.

Look around I can't recommend - but do your homework - they are out there. The large centers child / teacher ratio for a 3 year old class legally has to be 12 children to 1 adult. They may say that their ratio is much lower, but in a crunch trust me it will be 12 to 1 ratio. Also ask what education the teacher have, the minimum is 12 ECE (early childhood education), that's only 3 to 4 classes!

Most importantly which ever you should choose use more intution. Listen to your child as well, it will be your daughter that will be there, she should feel good about her school.
Should you want more information my e-mail is ____@____.com

Best of luck!
S.

There used to be a preschool program at Trinity church on
Hilldale and Madison. There is also one on Fair Oaks
Between Greenback and Old Auburn. (it is a Church also)
My kids attended both. Trinity was much more structured.

Hi A.,
I have twin 4-year-old girls who recently began attending St. Anna Preschool on E. Roseville Parkway right past Secret Ravine Parkway. It's a new school located inside St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church. Although it is located in a church, the curriculum is not overtly Christian. It's small and the teachers are great. They focus on Kindergarten readiness and my girls love it. It's not terribly fancy, but it's clean and affordable. If you'd like to call and set up an appointment, their number is ###-###-####. You can speak with Patti or Lily.

Hi A., my daughter has attended Wishing Well for the last two years and now is in Kindergarten. The director Patty is wonderful and you truely get the feeling that she and her staff genuinely love the children. My son who is 3 is now attending Wishing Well and he loves it. Please feel free to tell Patty that P. highly recommends wishing well. They have gardening where the children get to grow their own strawberries, they have a goat. And a couple of weeks ago, they brought in a baby lamb I believe and all the chidren got to feed the baby with a bottle. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

We love The Phoenix Schools on Trehowell (near Catherine Gates Elementary). My son started there last fall and he has learned so much! The teachers are great and my son likes it so much that just about every week he says he wishes he could go there all day, instead of just in the mornings. The program is very structured, which really works well for this age group.

Definitely tour a number of places, because you'll want to find what suits your child best. I've had friends rave about Montessori but those programs are disastrous for kids with ADHD like mine. What's great for one family isn't great for the next, so take all of these recommendations with a grain of salt until you see for yourself.

Good luck!
