I enrolled in NCTC for the RN program but I am hearing that it is not a great school. Does anyone know of a really great community/Tech college with a reputable nursing program? I need something within a 30 mile radius of me. I live in Denton.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I was just reading through your post and answers and wonder what you had decided. I am interested in getting a nursing degree and I'm not sure where to start. I live in S. Denton as well and work full-time at UNT. It would be ideal if UNT had a nursing program since staff can take classes basically for free but no such luck!

Why not go to TWU?? It's right there, where you live!! Their program is a 4-year, but Texas is supposed to be phasing out the 2-year programs if they haven't already. It's also one of the BEST Nursing/Medical Sciences schools in the state.

They also have a child care center that takes care of students' children, and at a much lower price than the "regular" day cares in town.

Email me if you'd like to "chat" about it...my email is ____@____.com

L., the NCTC program is not "unreputable". It is accredited- and that is all that matters. If you go to an accredited school, then you'll be as competetive in the job as anyone else. I hear there are some weaknesses of the program-- that some of the instructors aren't so strong... but school is generally what you make of it. If you are self-directed, and independent learner and are very motivated, then you'll do fine. NCTC is a great value. I teach at NCTC (English, not Nursing), and my husband has his RN/MBA and is in hospital management. The NCTC students come through his hospital a lot. I personally wouldn't drive further or pay more for a degree than necessary. Just be prepared to study a lot! :)
