I am currently home schooling my kindergartner. The main reason for this was that we moved to Sacramento almost 2 months after the school year started. So we made the choice to homeschool to make the transition to a new city easier. As much as I love homeschooling my daughter I don't think it will be possible in the new school year. We will be moving into a new house in about a month. It is located by Hurley and Fulton in Sacramento. I know that San Juan school district lets you pick your school (given room). I just dont know what school. She will be in first grade. i am so freaked out that I will pick the wrong school. I am sure I am feeling what a lot of moms feel when their child starts school for the first time. Someone please help me. I have also been looking at charter schools. I have driven by aspire on El Camino. Driving is not a problem as long as it is reasonable. suggestions please!!!!

What can I do next?

Well, our kids went to San Juan school district for their entire time. We loved Ottomon Elementary. It is in Orangevale. That is about 1/2 hour from were you live.
It's in a very safe area of town. The teachers and staff there are great.

Cowan Fundamental school is great. I think there is a waiting list but you may want to try that. It's off Whitney and Becerra. Not far at all from you. (you still need to drive, but probably 5-7 min)
I've heard nothing but great things about this school.

open enrollment is going on right now and it can be difficult to get into other schools. mariemont is in the arden park area, is usually full, but is a great school. sierra oaks is off of american river drive and not too far from you and that is also a really great school. i don't know if there are any "open" schools (like cowan or mission) near you but if there are, apply to them as well. i'd call tomorrow or jump onto the san juan school district web site right now. good luck!

Welcome to the Arden area and you are in one of the better districts for schooling our children (at least I think so). I have a 16 yr old that began school when we moved here in the middle school range so in that regard I can definitely let you know what schools he was at. However, I currently also have a 3 yr old who is starting preschool this week and I know his school is highly rated and near to where you will be living. It is Starr King Elementary School and I would refer you to check them out. They have specialized care, great teachers and are very easy to discuss things with. I wish you luck in your hunt for a good school but a lot just comes down to your child and once she likes a place, you will too.
I hope this helps a little.

Aspire charter school has many positive characteristics. I toured and liked it MOSTLY but am struggling with the VERY structured atmosphere. Structure is good to an extent... However, you may like it so you should schedule a tour. You need to call to schedule, but they offer them every Tuesday at 10:30am for about an hour. It's worth the hour. When I went, a couple parents brought their kids with them.
