Please HELP, My Daughter Won't Keep a Diaper On!!!!!!!!

My daughter is almost 2 years old and she will not keep her diaper on. She thinks her bed is a potty. Every time she lays down for a nap or at bedtime she will take off her diaper(clean I might add) and pee or poop in the bed. She doesn't even talk really yet, so I don't know if she could communicate needing to go to the bathroom. If anyone has suggestions or has had this problem please help me. I am going to try pull-ups and training potty this weekend. I am so tired of changing sheets. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the GREAT advice. It's comforting to know that we are not alone. It makes me feel so much better that I'm not the only one. Thanks again.

My sister in law had this problem, and she used (yes) duct tape and a footie sleeper zipped up backwards! It was all about confinement! But she only had to do it for a few days and her son forgot about taking his diaper off. It was just a fun trick for him...

I have a 25 month old that started doing the very same thing at about the same time as your daughter. She actually thought it was funny. I never figured out why she did it (my older daughter never did), but I quickly remedied the situation by buying pajamas that snapped at the waste. She was not very happy with the solution, but it served its purpose. She is now three months older and saying "mommy potty" constantly. She takes off her diaper and heads for her training potty. I've invested in some pull ups, but my toddler prefers to go around the house without those or pants. For now, I indulge her. I just make sure her potty seat is near by. I go at her pace and never force her to try and use the potty.

your daughter is ready for underwear. she doesn't like the feeling of the urine or bm on her body, that is a huge sign, my daughter is 18 months old and throughout the day she wears undrewear with plastic underwear on top and she has started to let me know if she needs to be changed or needs to use the potty. is not easy at first but you need to be constant. my daughter doesnt speak much yet but find a sign, a word to relate to potty and you will see the progress. good luck!!!!

It looks like a great time to start potty training. For my kids, PJs that covered access to the diaper worked. But some kids are determined. I had a friend who had to tape her daughter's diapers at night. Good luck!!

I have 2 words for you DUCT TAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes duct tape. I have a non-verbal 2 yr old with delays. She is NOT near ready for potty training but likes to be naked so she takes her diapers off first chance she gets. Even tries it in her car seat. The only way I can keep them on her is to wrap a strip of duct tape around her dipaer 1 1/2 times. Make sure it is not tight and does not touch the skin. I tried the wide clear box tape but it did not stick near as well. This sounds cruel but it does not hurt them and keeps them from playing in something that will make then sick (yuck). Good luck. If you find something else that works, PLEASE share with me. I have had to do this to 2 of my 7 kids.

duct tape was my first thought too...my two year old did this a couple of times last year before she turned two and she isn't ready for potty training yet. I just told her that diapers are only for mom and dad to take off because poop makes her bed and blankie and lovies yucky. She actually understood and quit it. I also tried to make sure she napped in clothes she couldn't remove herself.
It is a normal phase though...I remember at least one of my other two doing the same thing.

hi my name is B. I have three kids alex is 5, caityln is 4 and william is 18 months. we had the same problem with this and we found that if you put the diaper on backwards she won't be able to take it off. I would suggest not to use the pull-ups my kids would just go to the bathroom in them they just make a mess. we just waited till they were ready to be potty trained and once they were it was easy. my youngest is now taking his diaper off. so were putting his on backwards. and soon as it gets warmer we will just let him run around in his underwear or naked what ever he likes. thats what we did with the other two. hope some of this helps.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but my two year old daughter is exactly the same! I have to make sure she goes down with a onsie and tights or pants on if I don't want to find her stripped when i return after her nap!! her twin brother has no such inclinations, he can go down in just a nappy/diaper and still be there the same way after his nap. Must eb agirl thing!! Gooid luck, cos I tried the toilet training bu that didn't work either, well, not yet anyway!!
Cheers

I remember the days... it's been over 4 years or so since using diapers/pullups. Personally I think its pretty smart -- that your daughter knows and feels the need to take the diaper off before making her little #'s. Your on the right track by starting the potty training as soon as you are able to... it will be in no time your little one will be fully trained. Sorry for the mess though - I empathize - but know that this will pass as soon as her direction & idea of 'going' has been changed. Make it a fun experience and Best of Luck I know you'll both do Great!

A., this child is ready for the potty. Set one up in her room. She doesn't want the diaper anymore. Get her some pretty underwear and teach her to use the potty. You're lucky, she's smarter than the average child.

She may not be verbal but she is sending you a very clear message: She does not like the feeling of having poop or pee against her skin and who can blame her? Potty training this weekend? Absolutely! And don't give up and go back to diapers if it doesn't all happen immediatly as this will only send a confusing message to her. Buy a whole bunch of training pants and a little potty and show her how to use both. When she wets her pants, don't scold or admonish her, just explain matter of factly what happened and help her change into dry pants. With patience and a positive attitude, this can be such an exciting time for you both!

Hey! I have soo been there before with my daughter when she was still in diapers. The best suggestion that worked for me is to put on p.j.s that she can't get off like a onesie or a one piece nighty. Good luck! I know how hard it is to have to change sheets and clean a bed every night...

My son did this too...I dressed him in a onesie that snapped and then started dressing him in jeans or overalls (he couldn't undo the button). If I didn't use a onesie, he would just reach inside and pull out the poop to play with...YUCK!! My girlfriend did end up having to use duct tape and it worked great with her daughter, because she could get out of any type of clothes and the diaper. It is only a phase, don't you just hate hearing that...its just a phase, lol...{{{hugs}}}
