I just saw on a The Drs show the other day that real mayo gets rid of it! Rub it in good and let it sit for a few mins then rinse. Also, you can always get the shampoo at a pharmacy.
I was just told today yesterday my sister who lives out of town has head lice. My daughter was visiting family and her for 3 weeks but has been home since June 19. She has been itching her scalp for a couple days but I was thinking it was just from the sun and chlorine, until today. I have been frantic looking through her hair and sure enough, there are the little, most annoying bugs. SOOOOO, needless to say i'm a bit peeved, and I know it's not my sisters fault, but I need some of your all's expertise on how to get rid of this FAST. I have 3 other kids and several of my daughters friends have been over here. Does anyone have a great home remedy that works? Can someone tell me what to do or buy at the store? I know how hard it is to get rid of this and i'm sure there are things I need to do with her bedding and brushes and everything else. Please help! ugh! Thanks in advance for your responses.
OMG, you guys are great. I cant believe all the stories. I did hear before that they like clean hair so myabe I shouldn't be so pushy for my kids to shower everyday. hahaha! I definitely won't tell my daughter cause she WILL try to use it against me. hahah! Thanks so much for all of your advice. I am going to try a few things and i'll keep you all posted. I just had my top two wisdom teeth taken out this morning. I was put to sleep. So, hopefully tomorrow I can start experiencing. I really hate this because when I hear the work "lice" I think of dirty or trashy people but I know it's not. I just don't want my daughter to be teased and made fun of. Thank god it's summer, no school right now. Thanks again eeveryone, I sincerely appreciate it.

Someone else may have already mentioned it, but Melaleuca Oil (Tea Tree Oil) is GREAT at getting rid of lice.
olive oil, simple but true, i worked in a daycare and for people inc.the children kept passing it from one to another by laying on the rug during circle time, most could not afford all the shampoo and sprays,so with a little google search and seeing it for myself olive oil messaged in the scalp it works
If you go to the peoplespharmacy.com website and do a search for "lice", there are a lot of home remedies.
I have not had to deal with this yet as a mother but I got lice when I was in second grade from the girl who sat next to me (and her mother would not treat her). I was the oldest of four kids, and I believe we've all had it at some time.
My mother used dog shampoo on us since it was so much cheaper than the lice shampoo (one bottle would only do my hair one time because I had so much hair). Of course my hair was thoroughly combed and the knits were removed. I don't think they ever found bugs on me.
My mother was diligent about vaccuming and sanitizing bedsheets like everyone else has said.
The only other thing is that my mom would braid my hair and wrap in around my head for the remainder of the school year since the girl I sat next to did not get rid of her lice. (I kept getting it!) Keeping my hair up where it wouldn't brush against her coat or whatever seemed to help alot.
Hi J....
My daughter ran into some trouble a few years back where it felt like we could NEVER get rid of those little bugs. I tried every product on the market and eventually found this remedy. It killed all the bugs and the nits SHATTERED!
What you need:
A good cleansing shampoo - We used the classic green Prell
1 large bottle of REGULAR brown listerine.
A plastic shower cap
Here's what you do:
1) Wash her hair thoroughly with the Green Prell
2) Towel dry it
3) Coat her hair with the Brown Listerine (be careful not to pour it down her, it burns if it comes in contact with skin and can give your kiddo the chills.
4) Place hair in showercap and leave for 12 hours
5) After 12 hours, remove shower cap and rinse hair.
6) Wash hair again with green prell
7) Blow dry (comb hair while you do this -- you'll notice the Nits just shatter!
As for the bedding...a lot of folks will say wash in hot water...but I've found placing things in the dryer on hottest setting for 30 min and boiling combs and brushes for 5 minutes kills the suckers of those things.
Let me know how it turns out.
Good LUCK
J., my daughter has hair they LOVE. We've had it twice and it's always a chore to get rid of them. We used the lice shampoo and went through her hair tediously (spent 2 hours...God love her heart). Then I went through her hair again the next two nights. You can only use the medicated shampoo every X days, so inbetween if we felt the need we did a head covered in mayo and a shower cap (it suffocates them if you truly cover the head). It's best if you can find a way to be out of the house for a weekend because they can't survive away from a human that long.
In my research, I also found some claims that shampooing with denorex was a deterent. So, during the school year, we do that every Sunday night. Since we've been doing that we've been lice free...knock on wood.
The best advice I can give is be as thorough as you possibly can going through her hair...all it takes is one missed egg or live one for them to ramp back up.
Good luck.
J., the others gave wonderful responses, I just wanted to add, my girls have thick brown hair and we have been through this cycle so many times!!!! I use the RID shampoo, not the nix, it will not work! and the bedding spray. Wash the linens in hot water and the hot dryer, the other items can be sprayed or as they said, bagged and set in the sun for a week or two. To get rid of the eggs, I can't use the combs....too thick of hair, so I sit and go through inch by inch with my nails...I know gross...I also soak their hair in baby oil and wash it until it rinses out. Believe it or not it will help the eggs to slide off the hair. I do that for myself since there isn't anyone to do mine. hmmmm??? trying to think what else...Oh, had a babysitter that had never seen them, she said her mother always spread a little tea tree oil in their hair since they were Italian....so now I use Arbonne's treatment shampoo with tea tree oil. Has kept my girls clear for about 4 years now. Anyway good luck and try not to stress too much!!!! It happens to the best of us and also esp to those with really really clean hair! Don't tell your girls that or they'll stop washing it!! LOL! Take care!
RID. ask the pharmacist, but you have to treat everything and probably yourself and your husband or other kids to be safe.
J.:
hello, I have used Helman's Real Mayonaise in the past. Get it and put all over hair and then wrap hair in a plastic shower cap for 3 hrs. Then wash out. It doesn't make hair greasy and it does not have all the harsh chemicals. Can use olive oil also. This way you can treat all the kids and neighbors. For the house, strip ALL beds, pillows, etc and wash in hot water and dry in dryer. For stuffed animals, pillows, etc put in plastic bag and let set. I forget time period. For pillows, can also put in dryer. I buy spray for carpet, couch, car seats if cloth, etc.
Hope this helps and good luck.

I have 3 daughters and at the time that I was dealing with this they all had long hair(oh & they have a ton of it). I tried the shampoo and the spray and I for get what else, but what worked was the olive oil. drench her hair, every little strand then throw a shower cap on her and put her to bed. I did this 2 nights and they were gone. Also for her stuffed friends, if you put the in a plstic bag and sit them outside for a couple days they are safe. We kind of used this as a double clean up. We "forgot" to bring them back in. Just the ones that she didn't really play with. Her special ones got washed in hot water and dried on high for an hour. Also during the winter which at our school is the wost time for them I only have my girls wash thier hair every other night. Lice like clean hair. I hope at least something out of all of these great responses is able to help.
Good Luck
At the grocery store they have kits like "RID" that contain a special shampoo and comb that get rid of the lice. Make sure you wash the towels and sheets in hot water and soak all combs and brushes.
You have my sympathy. I got lice from my cousin as an adult and it was awful. I used the lice shampoo NIX with good results. I also learned that you can put pillows, stuffed animals, bedding, etc., in the dry for 20 min on HIGH and cook the little buggers! You can also put stuff in the freezer as well. Good luck!
When our whole entire family got this we used a store bought family size bottle of RID. The combing through to get rid of all of the little nits and adult lice takes the longest but is the most important step. We also soaked all the combs and brushes in a solution of alcohol, 3 parts, water 1 part. Take any stuffed animals, comforters or anything else that cannot be laundered and put in trash bags tied tightly for at least two weeks. We vacuumed every day and put sheets over all the cloth furniture. These sheets along with the bedding were laundered everyday in a hot cycle with bleach if we could. We laundered the bed pillows once then covered them with pillow protectors vinyl type material. The also had a spray for the cloth furniture, bed and carpets. Patience will be your best friend in the coming weeks. We diligently did this and we were lice free in 2 weeks. The kids did not get this a second time around but I have long hair and refused to shave my head so I had them a couple of days longer but we were totally free in two weeks. Please also let anyone who has been at your house know so they can check and treat if needed also. Good Luck and God Bless!
My sisters kid had this 3 times. They make over the counter medication believe it is called RID. Use the comb to get the nits out, very important! Also wash everything, sheets, linens, hats, car seat stuff and put brushes in boiling water or dishwasher. You may need to begin treatment on yourself or others in household. They can be difficult to get rid of completely. Good luck and keep in mind if she may get this again if she is around the same children. Most people are not as diligent about this as you need to be. Also I have always heard that lice prefer clean heads, so that may take a little of that stigma out of your mind.
My daughter got it last summer from my nieces and one thing I did learn is you have to pick all the nits out after you treat. Not just one time either I treated again 1 week later then at the 2 week mark. We spent hours picking through her hair and mine since we are the only ones with long hair I treated myself also but I never found anything in my hair. I think I looked through her hair every day for a month afterwards. Since its summer (it was june for us too) one thing that helps for bedding and stuffed toys is heat so what we did was took all the stuffed toys and bedding and put it in the car in the sun for 2 days with the windows rolled up. It got a good 150degrees in there and I figure it killed any bugs that were on the items. Wash as much bedding as you can and boil brushes and hair ties (or just buy new like we did).
Hello,
Last year around this time, there was a outbreak of lice at my employer. I was told to do the head lice treatment from RID in the store. Then wash your bedding and brushes. And in the store, they also have a aersol RID spray that you can use for the furniture etc. And one of our nurse's that works with also mentioned that at the store, they have a dog shampoo that has RID in it also to wash your hair like once every two weeks or something like that as a preventative. I know it sounds wierd but it helps.
Head lice can happen to anyone no matter your station in life or how clean you are. We had trouble in our boarding school (all children from wealthy families) and had quite a time getting it under control. We talked to salons in our area and searched the net. We started using shampoo with T-Tree oil in it. The lice do not like this and will vacate the head. We continued to have the students use it 1-2 times a week as a preventative after washing the hair daily with it for 2 weeks. You will still have to wash bedding, vacuum furniture and treat stuffed animals. Hope this helps.
