Hi Moms,

For the past 6 weeks, my friend's 8 y/o daughter has been very sick. She was diagnosed with liver failure and has been in and out of the hospital, but mostly in. She has had countless bloodwork and biopsies, only to leave her medical team stumped as to the cause of her liver failure. Her daughter has a rare thyroid disease called RTH (resistance to thyroid hormone), and she has been on medication for it for a while, however, they do not see a connection between her RTH and her liver failure. Her liver is enlarged and breathing is difficult at times. She is on the liver transplant donor list, but is not considered bad enough to have a transplant - just yet - although it seems like it could vey well be a reality for her soon. If anyone has any suggestions as to what on earth could have caused her daughter to have liver failure, please let me know! I would love to hear your guesses, theories, opinions, etc. Thank you so much.

What can I do next?

Autoimmune disease? w thyroid resistance and liver problems, sounds like her own body may be her worst enemy.

The only thing that I can think of is Tylenol. Has your friend's daughter been given a lot of Tylenol for pain. Or has had a cold recently and taken OTC medicine for it? Many of the OTC cold and allergy medicine has Tylenol (or acetaminophen) in it. Acetaminophen is toxic to the liver. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

Bless her heart (and her mother's). Good luck finding the cause.

I'm sorry for your friend and her daughter - so awful.

I can't answer why it is happening, but I do know that there is an organ donor group that matches up people who have needs/wants w/ people within the sick person's extended family.

For example, her daughter needs a liver but is not getting one from the traditional list, the mother (grandmother, aunt, uncle, etc.) can all be tested as a match. If they come up negative as a match for this little girl they have their information put into a database and then if they are a match for someone else... and that person's relative is a match for this little girl then the relatives donate their respective organs to the other family and the sick each get a new liver (part of liver actually ;) ). I can't remember what the site is called - but I'm sure you could google it or find out from the donor rep at the hospital she's at. good luck - we'll be praying for her.

I'm sorry your friend's daughter is going through this...

I wouldn't even know where to speculate on how this happened.

I would just pray for her..sorry - I know you are expecting more but really? She is in my prayers.

There are a lot of rare diseases popping up everywhere lately. So rare, that many Dr.s haven't heard of them, and many large drug companies don't have med for them that insurance will even cover. Rare diseases are almost always genetic, and hit is early infancy or early to mid childhood.

scroll down for a comprehensive list of things that can cause liver failure, though I would assume that these would have been ruled out by the medical team by now, but you never know.

My granddaughters liver was enlarged one time and they said it was a common sign of a bladder infection or UTI. I don't know how they would cause/effect each other but they had no concern whatsoever and I was freaking.
