What are the basics a single mom, with a career that includes nothing but scrubs, include?
I also live on a farm, in the country so shopping is limited.

What can I do next?

Good jeans, nice boots ( dress not western), nice tops and sweaters, cute little black dress or 2, black pants.

Choose items to mix and match,

Lots of online options for shopping if you're not close to a shopping center.

I love White House Black Market and I shop both in the store and online. I have some classic pieces and I add to it every now and then.

I tried but but was not pleased with Stitch Fix. I know it's popular with a lot of moms. I found the quality to not be what I expected for the money.

I'm super picky though

Jeans, boots, nice tops, sweaters, flannels, really whatever you are comfortable in. my 13 year old is quick to tell me if she likes or dislikes the clothes I buy. She says I dress fashionably for a mom - and not like a mom who thinks she is 15 still. LOL! But really, if you're comfortable in it, it works!

Do you have a Macy's or store like that near you?
They have personal shoppers/stylists at no charge to you that can set up an appointment for you to go over and try on what is current, your sizes, etc.

I used to work at a women's clothing store called Casual Corner/Petite Sophisticate. They all closed around here, but we would get phone calls like this all the time and we loved it!

A person could just give us their size, colors, event, etc and we would set up a dressing room for them.

Otherwise I think it depends on you...which is more important...comfort or stylish....casual or dressy...trendy or classic?
Don't forget shoes too!

Good luck!

your situation is super easy, isn't it? you wear scrubs to work and practical farm clothes on your farm. have a few simple basics for other situations, a LBD, a conservative skirt and blouse, a pair of good dress slacks, some neutral pumps.

Start with separates that can mix/match. I have a pair of black pants that I'm in for almost everything - a women's chorus with "black bottoms/white tops" for concerts, holidays with a sparkly top or scarf, professional look with a jacket or 2, even Halloween with a black sweater and skeleton earrings!

You don't say if you want clothing for casual, weekends, parents' night at the kids' school, date night, or what.

If you can get to a major department store, or a place like Dress Barn whose buyers do a great job of putting things together in complementary colors, great. Otherwise, use a catalog that includes measurements and not just sizes. Once you find something good, buy it in 2 colors that you can mix with other things. Some of the popular magazines show how to build a wardrobe with 10 items - try your public library for back issues.

A friend of a friend is a nurse, so pretty much scrubs for her as well. She also lives on a farm with her parents and helps out a lot. Besides her work clothes, she has the standard jeans and t-shirts. But when she is on her own time, she likes to wear pretty blouses, skirts, nice slacks. She once told me she feels like she is dressed up when she goes to buy food. But she likes to feel good about herself. Buy what makes you feel good.

You should be wearing clothing that suits what you need it to do, and clothing that you enjoy wearing.

If anything, my advice would be that your clothing should be well-fitting. If it is difficult to put on - hopping, tugging, laying down, dislocating a shoulder - it's likely too small. If you can hide child under what you're wearing and it isn't a skirt, it is probably too big.

I think your closet would be full of jeans...lol. All the farmers I know wear jeans and sturdy shirts and muckers or boots of some sort.

I do have friends that "garden" and have very large nice farms and they can go walk through after work and still have on work clothes. So I guess it depends.

When you go to town maybe you can slip on a pair of slacks and a cute top/blouse/shirt that is stylish? I know it's sort of silly feeling to dress up to go to Walmart but I always ee people I know.

I dress out of old navy. With office casual which would also do for church, school, a parent function or a casual date. Slacks, a floral collared shirt and a sweater. Paired with nice penny loafers or kitten heels.

Happy shopping.

You should wear whatever makes you feel beautiful. Personally, I must have:
--a great pair of skinny jeans
--cute, comfy boyfriend jeans
--black leggings
--lots of colorful tank tops
--low heel boot
Then I add a cute t- shirt, crisp blouse, flannel, sweater or kimono style shrug on top. I also love some fun pattern "Lularoe" leggings with an oversize top. I figure if I'm not hanging out any of the goodies and I feel good, why not wear it!

The vast majority of the time, I like to be comfortable, so I'm in jeans and a shirt - I usually buy basic cotton shirts in solid colors so they feel like t-shirts but look a little nicer (In the winter, I switch from short sleeves to turtlenecks). I also like to have just a few (2-3) more trendy things, and 1-2 basic dresses.

What the trendy items will be for you will depend on your body type. Personally, for the trendy things, just this past week I bought a pair of black skinny jeans and two longer (mid-thigh) tops - one short sleeved and one sweater. And I plan to wear them with my boots this winter.

Whatever it is, make sure it's something that YOU are comfortable in, because if you like how you you look, you'll be confident in it. If you don't like how you look in it, no matter what anyone says, it will sit in the back of your closet untouched.

For the 2 dresses, I buy classic styles and keep them for years.

I do my shopping at Ross. I like their clothes and their prices.

Hi R.! I would just wear whatever makes you comfortable, which is kind of what I do now -- jeans mostly, t-shirts, some nice tops and blouses for an evening out or a formal gathering which can be something as simple as a black, fitted cotton shirt with a pretty embellished collar, some plaid shirts, sweaters or flannel shirts that you can wear for the colder months, a couple of casual dresses for special occasions, sandals, flip flops, shorts, flats, and sneakers. Just because you live on a farm and I live in a city doesn't mean you can't wear the same stuff I do! Ok, perhaps the flip flops are not practical being on a farm, but you could wear flats, or some boots. Cowboy boots with jeans or shorts are always cute and practical.

You can Google "casual outfits" or "casual mom outfits" and borrow inspiration from there. I like the way Reese Witherspoon dresses and she's actually your age, so that's someone else you can use for inspiration. You can always shop online, Amazon.com offers free refunds most of the time, if the shopping in your town is limited. My friend lived in a small town and once a month, she'd drive 1-2 hours to the suburbs and go shopping for clothes for herself and her daughter, so that is another option. I buy my costume jewelry either online or at a Charming Charlie's, they also sell scarves, handbags, and other accessories at great prices. A simple scarf can change a plain black shirt you wore a few days ago and make it look like you have a whole new outfit. Good luck, I'm sure you'll look great.

I wear jeans or denim shorts every day, with some kind of cute t-shirt or sleeveless top (long sleeves in winter). Most of my tops come from Kohl's.

One important question is - what are you doing during your non-scrubs time? Do you need outfits for running a PTA meeting at school? Outfits for meeting other moms for coffee? Outfits for going out on dates to bars/clubs/restaurants? Comfortable farm-work outfits? Gym clothes for going to the gym?
