Hi moms,
I have a 2 yr old daughter that reaches in her diaper and plays with poop. I have given her time outs, and told her not to do it again, but she still does it. Anyone with some advice on how to make her stop!!!!!! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Put her diaper on backwards, and duct tape the tabs closed if needed. (or one or the other might work for her). I agree that onesie type shirts and overalls or one piece outfits would be a good preventative.

Also, if her hands get dirty, don't make a big deal, just wash her hands, change her, and move on. The more attention that's drawn to a negative behavior tends to make things worse.

It's normal for her age - she's not trying to make you crazy, I promise :) She's probably not enjoying being poopy, so it might be that potty training is in your (near?) future.

Good luck!

She is doing what is natural for her age. All toddlers do that. You need to put a top that snaps in the crotch and put pants or shorts on her. We did a lot of overalls with the shirt. They look really cute on little girls with their hair pulled up into tiny little pig tails. Stop punishing her for this. She can't help it, every child does this.

This is part of getting to know her body. She is starting to learn things about her body and this is a step closer to potty training.

It's your job to make it harder for her to get to the diaper.

Tell her no, as you have been, remove it, and offer something else that has a pleasing texture, like Play-Doh. Also, you can make your own dough and scent it, color it, etc, so it may hold more appeal than the contents of her diaper. Sounds like a normal thing, honestly. Likely she is attracted to the texture--toddlers are very tactile creatures. Good luck!

My two-year-old is doing this too. I took as a cue that I need to start potty training very, very soon. Along with putting her hands down her diaper, she is obsessed with taking off her pants, and sometimes her diaper, and every time I change a poopy diaper she wants to see it. I just think it's all movement towards potty training.

So, whenever she takes off her pants, I ask her if she wants to sit on the potty which she usually does. We've done this multiple times but nothing has happened on the potty yet. But then again, I'm not really trying to potty train - I'm just responding to what she is doing. Ok, I went on a tangent.

Anyway, I don't think punishment is a good idea. I agree with others that she is getting to know her body and it's probably time to potty train. I tell my daughter that is gross when her hand comes out of the diaper with poop on it and that we have to wash our hands now. If I see her putting her hand down her diaper, I ask her if she wants to sit on the potty. If she continues to do it, I tell her to stop and try to distract her with play.

for this one we had to result to LOTS and LOTS of baths , telling him how disgusting it was and how he could get sick if he kept doing it.

Sounds like she may be ready to potty train. Keep telling her no and make sure you drop the poop in the toilet to let her know that's where it belongs and it's not a toy!

Ha! The silly things kids do. This is a good oppurtunity for you to remind yourself that you have been on this earth way longer than she has and that she's still learning and exploring.

I think sometimes as mom's and dad's we forget that. I know I do!
