Play Options for Small Children in or near Excelsior

My husband and I are considering buying a home in Shorewood, just outside Excelsior's city limits. We currently live in SW Mpls, very close to Lake Harriet, where there is always a lot of activity. The property in Shorewood would be more of a "country" property, and needless to say, a lifestyle change for our family. We have one son who is 4 yrs. old. I'm concerned that he would be lonely in the "country", without a park, rec center, etc. within walking distance or other small children close by. There are homes near the one we are considering, but I don't know if there are any other small children on the lane. Excelsior would be a 2 minute car ride away. Does anyone have any advice based on their experience raising small children in the country? Or is anyone in Excelsior looking for possible future playdates?

What can I do next?

My mom grew up in Excelsior and my grandparents lived there until I was an adult. I spent a lot of time in Excelsior as a child. It is a lovely town with a beautiful main street, very convenient to many things and very suburban. There is a very nice park and beach in town. Is there someone on the same street you could ask about kids in the area? The Old Log Theatre is a nice resource and does children's plays a couple of times per year. It is a short drive to the Arboreteum with a variety of activities and classes for children. I'm sure you could meet other children through a Mom's group or ECFE class; it is a very family friendly area. It gives me a little chuckle that it is "country" to you because I grew up with one neighbor within walking distance and surrounded by farms and farmland and going to my grandparents' house near Excelsior was going to "town." Good luck.

We live in Minnetonka, not far from Shorwood. It is hardly the country. My kids have tons of friends around us. Excelsior is a great place to hang out! Tons of stuff to do. There are also tons of parks around the different neighborhoods, the libraries in MTKA or excelsior and a number of different moms groups that meet in various locations close by. Many of them advertise in the local paper. There is also the Minnetonka ECFE. They always have things going on and are a great resouce for finding extra things to do. They are located in Deephaven, which is right next to Shorewood.

I don't live in Excelsor but my aunts and uncles do and they were always busy when there kids were growing. I know downtown excelsior is really cute and during Christmas they bring in a raindeer petting zoo. There are a lot of parks around. They can seem a little harder to find because of all the trees, The lake is a huge draw all year round to. My daughter is 2 and when we go over she loves to feed the ducks and fish bread crumbs. I know there is a Club kid in Minnetonka and a few big lifetime gyms in the area. I take my daughter to both on occasion just for some more social ineractions and so I can run to the store or breath. I sure you will enjoy it and think of all the fun out-door things you can do to. Catch bugs, find pine cones etc.

Hi A.,
We are currently building a home in Shorewood and we're moving from Chicago...hopefully in March. Our new home is located behind Minnewashta Elem?? We looked all over the west suburbs and chose Shorewood b/c of the amazing schools and great community. I see that someone already mentioned the early childhood programs in Deephaven...I've heard wonderful things. It's funny I'm writing you b/c we're not living there yet. : ) There are also MOM groups in that area that provide a lot of great info and ideas. Let me know if you would like to keep in touch and/or get together. I have two little girls...3 and 20 mos. We are living at my parents in IA and have not been around many kids, so I'm anxious to get my 3 yr old around more kids! Hope this helps!

There are some really nice Three-Rivers Parks out there. I also live near Lake Nokomis and enjoy the city, but I would love to move out to the country. I think it is a great environment for kids! You'll have a park in your yard. Maybe you could get him a dog for company?
