Play Kitchen for Boys?

I am really having a hard time coming up with Christmas gift ideas for my two boys, ages 4 and 1, this year. We do not need anymore blocks, trains, and trucks!!! I was thinking that a play kitchen would be a good idea as our 4 year old is interested in pretend play at this point and the little one could play with all of the pieces for now. Is this a weird toy for boys? My husband seems to think that it is a girl gift! Any suggestions on which one would be good for boys and at their ages?

Thanks

What can I do next?

My son LOVED his play kitchen for a long time! As long as its not pink, who cares! NOTHING wrong with a boy playing like he is cooking! My son also has a vacuum, and dolls. No reason to gender type toys. They are kids, and it's good for them to expand their little minds and imaginations!

What a wonderful boy gift! Mine had one! (two boys) and one of my sons has a culinary certificate now and wants to be a chef. Watch tv and who are all the great chefs? Emerill, Mario, go on you know what I mean!

We bought my son a play kitchen for Christmas when he was 2 years old. He's now 6 years old and still plays with it. Now my 3.5 year old daughter plays with it too. It is definitely not a girl toy. Of course in my house both me and my husband cook and bake so it's normal for the children to see us both use the kitchen. I say get one for him, I'm sure he'll have fun with it.

I think it's strange that our culture markets kitchens and grocery carts to little girls and not boys. Boys can have the same toys, and enjoy cooking just as much as a girl. Look at nova natural toys http://www.novanatural.com/s.nl/sc.16/category.20888/.f
or any Waldorf inspired toy company and you will see boys playing with these type of toys, and even with baby dolls, so they can learn to be good daddies.

I would get them the kitchen for sure!

There is such things as male chefs? Look at Gordon Ramsey, i bet he had a play kitchen. lol.

My daughter likes the walk in kitchen by fisher price i think. they have it at costco for like $179 right now.

Good luck!

Share with your hubby that pretend play/dramatic play is one of the KEY foundations for success in school down the road! Any kitchen will do! I know so many boys who have kitchens. And the ones that didn't loved to play with my daughter's when they were over for playdates.

PS...start saving your plastic food containers (milk chugs, cottage cheese, butter tubs, cups with lids, etc.) so that your sons have a ton of accessories to use. Much cheaper than buying store bought stuff! :)

I have two boys and we have gotten lots of use out of our kitchen. We got ours from Target. It's a very simple wood model that is blue:) I know there are a few that I've seen at TRU that are very gender neutral.

LOL! My husband is/was the same way. After alot of convincing, we are ordering a kitchen set from onestepahead for our son for xmas. he will be 21 months then. He loves to play in the kitchen set at any house we go to. The one we chose is expensive, but it looks exactly like our kitchen. It has stainless appliances and "granite" countertops:) The little tykes prep n serve is cute and the little tykes gourmet. Good luck!

My husband felt the same exact way. I have a two year old son and we bought him one for his birthday. He plays with it every day multiple times. He has a really good time. My husband has changed his thought on this once he has seen the joy it brings my son.

Because men/boys never use a kitchen, right? My nephew got a play kitchen 2 years ago for Christmas and both he and his brother love it. In this instance, disregard your husband. If you think your child would like a play kitchen, get it.

My son loves both pretend and real cooking. He's three. He also has a pretend grill, which might go over easier with your husband : ) But I see no reason at all the boys shouldn't have a play kitchen (or a doll house for that matter, but that might be pushing a point).

My 4 yr. old doesn't play with it much anymore. He got it at age 3, but maybe since you have a younger boy, they would play it longer than mine did.

Boys LOVE play kitchens (and dress up even) as much as any girl. I've worked in preschools/day cares and it was a rare boy that didn't spend some time in that area. Oh, and my boys 5 and 2 love theirs as well.

Definitely not a girl gift! Oh, and the 1 year old will LOVE opening and closing all the doors.

Check out this one which has a grill on the "outside" portion of it.

And the Step 2 ones have nice color schemes for boys.

And I found this old thread on the same subject.

My son loves is play kitchen. He is 3yrs and has had his kitchen for almost a year now. My husband wasn't that for the idea of it until I told him that someday when I am not home someone will need to cook dinner and we both know you can't cook. So I explained to my DH that with our son playing in his kitchen and learning how to cook it will keep him from starving he was all for the idea. My son as also started helping me cook too.
BTW my son also has one doll and a shopping cart that he plays with all the time. IMO...I am helping him learn skills for becoming a great husband and father one day.

BUY IT!!!

My son begged for a kitchen when he was about 2.5. I bought him a tool work bench, tools, toolbox and about everything I could find to go with it because everyone said that kitchens are for girls. To this day I regret it! He never touched that expensive tool bench. Not once! Instead he would play with his friend's play kitchen and the churches. If I could go back, I would find him a non pink kitchen and watch him have a blast with what he asked for! He would have loved it!

My son LOVES my daughters kitchen, granted, he's only 12 months, but he plays with it more than she does. We have friends that have 3 boys and against her husbands wishes, she bought them the kitchen that has the grill attached too. They love it. It's not the 50's anymore, why do men still think that kitchens and vacuums are for girls!!! I would get one, you won't regret it.
