Placenta Previa - New York,NY

Hi,
I am 16 weeks pregnant and just found out that I have complete placenta previa. I have been having weird pressure, which I was told was normal pregnancy stuff & have not bled, it was seen on the sono when I had my amnio earlier in the week. At that point they said is was slight so I really wasn't concerned. Now that I've heard from my OB that it's complete, I'm really worried- the info online is very scary. She told me to avoid sex & strenuous exercise, but that I can walk (even as exercise) and take stairs. I'm really uncomfortable with that. I'm not sure if I'm just overreacting and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks so much,
E.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your responses. My son was a C-section, so a repeat is essentially a done-deal. As long as my baby and I are safe and healthy I'm happy. My OB just wants to wait til the 20 week scan to see what happens, since I'm asymptomatic at this point. I have a very conservative group of OBs, so if there was any real issue now, I'm sure they'd be monitoring me super-closely. Thanks again.

it's not uncommon. i had it with my second. a c-section will be definite. take it easy, don't do anything strenuous. there may be some interim spotting...take it easy. idelivered at 35.5 weeks, not unusual to deliver a bit earlier when placenta previa. i didn't really have any bedrest or hospital stays. dr. said i was lucky in that way. however, i made sure to take it easy and not really lift anything heavy...not even my older child if i could work my way around it. like for instance, hugs. you can sit on the couch an give a hug. child can be on a stair or tow or three higher then the ground for a hug. be creative, and good luck and don't worry so much. self fulfilling prophecies are not fun.

I had placenta previa and received the same advice. I would encourage you to continue with light exercise (walking) as it will reduce swelling and keep your heart and body healthy, as recommended by my doctor. They tend to move "up" and your body expands and correct itself. These were my doctor's words to me (as I was in a panic), "worst case scenario, you have a c-section".

The only thing I will caution you about is that placenta previa makes it harder for the nurses to find the heartbeat. This really upset me each time I went, but the doctor always found it within a minute! They tend to hear the placenta b/c it's in the front.

Hi, I had it twice. I hemmoraged with both pregnancies. The first one, I lost 50% of my blood and on the second I lost just a little. I would not walk a lot. I disregarded everything on the first pregnancy and worked (at a desk). I almost lost my life. It is really hit or miss and each body is different. you might be just fine, but you will be takinga a gamble because no one can be for sure. I would take it very easy.

Hi E.,

Your doctor's advice is very normal. Pelvic rest is a good idea so that nothing sticks the placenta, but you don't need to worry about bedrest or anything unless you start to develop complications (which most people don't). So walk without worry! :)

If it doesn't correct itself (many early previas do), you'll need a C-section, but that's often the only implication. Good luck!

Hi,
Everyones advice is good. I had the same at 16 weeks and by 5 months it was moving. And like they said by 3rd trimester it can be gone, like mine. So dont stress, as there is nothing you can do. Just hope that it moves. I think it is more common than we think.

Dear E., Congrats on your second pregnancy and also on your son. I had placenta previa 40 years ago when I carried my third child. This was before sonograms and such. I did not know until the day I delivered. Needless to say I did not curb and activities. The doctors know so much more these days and because they know, will be prepared. Try not to worry. All will be well. Grandma Mary

Just try and relax. My friend and I were pregnant together and she had a complete placenta previa and I had a low lying placenta. In both our cases, it turned out fine. We both gave birth naturally to gorgeous healthy babies. I know it's scary, but as long as you listen to your doc everything will be fine!!! :)
