Our first born child will be 3 in June. My husband and I are tossing around the idea of preschool, but are unsure of the possibilities in Pittsfield, and of what is a good school. Originally from WI, where some public schools have preschool and many private schools have 3 yr programs. Well, I guess my question is can anyone suggest a good program for 3 yr olds? Budget friendly, please. :) I'm mostly concerned about the socialization aspect of preschool, as we read a wide variety of books on a wide variety of subjects, talk about letters, numbers, shapes, etc. as much as he will listen to us blab. :) Do all the public schools have 4 yr programs? Do Kindergarten teachers expect that a child has gone to preschool? Even if there is not one at their school? We're clueless first time parents when it comes to this. :) Your suggestions and thoughts will be appreciated!

Hi C., I am from Wisconsin too and have a great friend with 2 boys in Pittsfield who could give you advice. I hate to post her info online but she owns the Stone School House Gallery and you can tell her her friend from Needham recommended you call. She would know the low-down on the schools as she is very thorough.
Good Luck.

As for me, I have 2 boys (ages 5 and 7) and both went to preschool. In many ways, I think it is more for the parents sometimes then the kids (Do you need a break?) Also, it was a very good socialization and early learning experience for them and has made other transitions much easier. Call my friend.

Hi C.,

i'm a new mom to this site but i have a set of 13 year old twins--man thats hard to admit-they just turned 13 yikes!
Have you checked out possible head start programs?? in my area there were not really any preschools around that i could afford and headstart was offered through the school that they attend now. This program is wonderful. My kids adjusted to this so quickly and it was such a good experience for them and they just flowered from it. They made friends that they still go to school with now and they learned so much. when they were 3 years old they were learning sign language in order to communicate with one of children and they still remember it. It also help them to understand that no matter if you have a birth defect or suffer from an illness or what color of skin you have we are all equal and that means alot to me. My kids are better for having had this experience. It also helps them prepare for kindergarten because in my area it is now a full day and to go from nothing to all day is a very hard transition. Good luck with your search and I hope all works out. Take care

Hi C.,
I'm not sure what there is for preschool in Pittsfield. I just wanted to comment about your question of if Kindergarten teachers expect a child to have gone to preschool. My son (who is now 15) did not go to preschool and boy did I wish he did. There weren't many options where we use to live and also thought he was better at home with myself or his dad. He wasn't use to the classroom setting and routine. He ended up going to pre-1st because he was a little immature (socially). I also work in daycare and am a certified inf/toddler teacher and preschool teacher. I think that it is important for him to go to preschool to get use to a classroom setting and to socialize. Good luck with your search. I hope you find what you are looking for. : )

Wow, C., I'd like to suggest you reconsider preschool for socialization. I have found as a busy mom of four they seem to learn alot more negatives during those hours than positives, I always say "It's not how much they learn at school, it's how much they have to unlearn when they get back home!" If your ds has any time with other children (Sunday School, moms group, neighbors...) plus the benefit of a sibling I sincerely earge you to keep him home, he'll almost always be way ahead of the game :) W. I personally think that children need to be home until kindergarten. I know that our "culture" is now pushing for earlier and earlier schooling, but I think that children need to be home in a secure environment and just play. Kindergarten was set up for the reason of getting a child ready for "real" school. That is the reason it was/is half a day(or should be).
