PISD Off-campus PE?

My 7th grader goes to Hendrick MS in Plano. She's looking at the new 8th grade PE policy (will need to take a full year of PE instead of 1 semester). The advisor was getting her interested in off campus PE and she came home all excited about doing swimming and/or horseback. She enjoys those things but hasn't done them much. The thing is, the off campus PE requires at least 10 hrs per week, spread over 5 days/week. This all seems like a bit much and I told her it's more for students who are already heavily into some sport. My daughter is not competitive and not very athletic; she just wants to do something she'd enjoy instead of the standard old PE class, which leaves her disliking PE instead of getting her interested in fitness. Has anyone done the off-campus PE without having their kid being seriously into athletics? I just can't imagine her spending 2 hrs per day plus travel time doing this all during the school year. (She also thinks that 10 hrs per week seems excessive.)

What can I do next?

I'm not a very athletic type person, either. However, swimming and dancing are 2 things that I loved doing. If my high school had had a swim program, I would have been very involved in it!! I think once your daughter gets into the swimming or the horseback riding, she will realize how quickly that time goes. Horseback riding will also involve taking care of the horse after the ride ~ taking the saddle and tack off and brushing him down, etc. Depending on the facilities, your daughter will probably also learn how to saddle her own horse, and making sure the tack equipment is in good shape before she puts it on her horse (for her safety, as well as the horse's). There is far more to this class than "just" the riding.

A swim program is also going to involve the necessary stretching before the swimming, to minimize pulled muscles, etc. And, again, because there can only be so many students in the pool at any given "moment in time", your daughter will not be swimming all 120 minutes during those 2-hour classes.

Keep asking questions, both of the school district, the facilities, and your daughter, and you will come up with the right decision. I agree with the other mom....if your daughter already loves doing one of these, she just might turn out to be more "competitive" than you, or she, thought! But neither one of you will know until you at least try.

My daughter will be in 8th grade at Hendrick next year! I have not heard about the year round PE for 8th grade but I support it. She enjoyed PE last semester.

As for outside PE, we were given an option for her to do that in 5th grade because she was in training for her black belt which was nightly. We opted not to forgo the PE at school. I felt that it still helped her socially as well as getting exercise.

I also have a neighbor with a 4th grader who trains heavily with gymnastics and she does not go to PE at school. She trains 4 hrs a day at the gym.

I did swimming when i was in high school and it was perfect for me. I was not very competitive either, but that's the great thing about swimming. You're really competing with yourself - trying to beat your previous time.
It was a lot of time after school, but I really enjoyed it so I didn't mind the extra time. You might be surprised at how athletic she can be if she has this outlet. Something to join and be a part of a team.

Plus, she's still young -- she can start a good swimming training program now and be scholarship material when college rolls around! :-)
I wished my parents had encouraged me more in sports when I was a kid.
