Pin Worms - Orlando,FL

Ok, to my surprise, my 4 yr old was diagnosed with pinworms today, and they are running a culture on her urine, which was why I brought her in, because the complaint was it hurt when she peed, there was no itching, scratching or anything. Well, I won't know about the urine until Fri/Sat, but it seems she is a bit irritated and that could be why the pee hurts. Anyway, I'm reading about pin worms (gross), and how they are spread (gross again) and wanted to know what to expect when I tell her preschool? I kept her home today and she's had the treatment, the Dr said she should be OK to return to school, will the school be OK with this? I guess it's treated like a lice infestation? It's not harmful but contagious? I'm wondering how many others in her school have it, and if they don't get treated, it will just re-infect?? I'm just not sure how this works. Any experience with this?? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Within 24 hours of having the meds, she can return to school. My 11 year old has had them 3 times!!! Wash ALL bedding in the house. I'm a freak, so the last time, I washed every stuffed animal, all bedding, steam cleaned the carpets, steamed the couches, everything! Teach your child to scrub underneath her fingernails and keep her nails short. Make sure she washes her hands EVERY time she goes potty.
I know it sucks. :( I don't want anyone to get infected with them. It's so gross!

Just get the treatment. It used to be one dose and then I think a week later you take another dose. My girls are older but I remember those days vividly. Wash everything in hot and hot dryer too. My girls never got it back from that same event so don't worry. Kids put their hands in their mouth all the time and chew their nails. It won't hurt them. Don't make her paranoid. Breathe.

See if you can get an information sheet from your pediatrician to explain about pinworms and a note stating she is ok to return to school. If she's cleared by the Dr, they have to be ok with it...she won't be contagious anymore. One of my sons got pinworms a couple of years ago. We got rid of them and they haven't come back. The big thing is to really encourage hand washing, including under the nails. Also, make sure she takes the second dose of medication, or there's a high chance of reoccurance because it only kills the adult pinworms, not the eggs. The second dose kills the new pinworms before they can reproduce. Good luck!

My 4.5 year old has this, too. I talked to my pedi about it, and she said it is VERY common for children this age, and not to stress about it. DD had it about a year ago, and she took the medication. But this time around, we are not using meds. This pedi recommended using Vaseline. Every night before bed, apply a liberal amount of Vaseline to his perianal area and then put on undies or diapers or whatever your LO uses. The idea is that when the worms come out at night to do their thing, the vaseline will act as a hostile environment for them, thus inhibiting their further growth.
