Pillows

My son loves to lay on our bed pillows and the couch pillows but I have no idea at what age it's safe to allow him to sleep with a pillow in his crib. Does anyone know? Also, where do you get a good kid-size pillow? Another question I have is when should I start trying to eliminate his morning nap? He's still taking 2 naps during the day and seems to still need that morning nap. When should I expect him to not need it anymore? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went and bought Keegan a pillow over the weekend. I had trouble finding a junior size pillow so I just went with a standard size. It's a little to "fluffy" for him but he seems to like it still. He just kinda sleeps with his whole upper body on it. He's still sleeping all night long so it must be comfortable for him. Thanks so much to all of you for your input. It is much appreciated!

Hi C.!

Baby Center suggest not using pillows until two, but my daughter starting using hers when she was 17 months. I starting using it because she tends to get congested, so I wanted to keep her upper body more elevated while sleeping. We've had no problems. I got my kid-size pillow from IKEA, but I know IKEA's are few and far between! They sell the pillows and adorable pillow cases that fit accordingly. Maybe they sell them online?

Best wishes!!

As far as the nap goes, my 13 month old son sometimes takes both naps and sometimes not just depends on what he's doing when it's playtime with his 2 1/2 year old brother. Sometimes they play in their room until they both pass out and only take one nap at the same time but sometimes he will take both and the 2 1/2 year old won't take one at all and go down for bed a little early and still get up at the same time the next morning. It all depends on them. When they start fighting it then they don't need that nap.

As far as the pillow goes, I have one in both boys' beds. My 2 1/2 year old got one when he was about 16 months old but the 13 month old insisted on getting one himself at 11 months so what we did is we had one that got really flat because we'd actually had it quite some time and washed it so much that it's mostly flat now but not pancake flat and got ourselves a new one. Just with germs and the kids I usually wash it twice a week since we've had it for a while.

He'll be taking two naps a day for awhile. My son is 19 months and he still takes two naps, most of the time. My son decided on his own that he wants a pillow around 12 months. So, a nice size kid pillow would be an ideal thing to get now. Have you tried getting a pillow from Babies R Us or Walmart?

our son slept with a pillow at around a year old (give or take a month or two) what we had was a small travel pillow that my husband had gotten (i believe at the airport of all places) when he was traveling. Our son loved it! but I am not sure i am the shining example, our son loved to sleep on his stomach at around 2 months old so we let him - he was rolling over on his own anyway, so might as well let him be comfortable, ya know? my husband and i are both belly sleepers so we figured he was too - and he is - he has slept on his tummy ever since he was little. we got a lot of grief for it - but he is still alive and kicking at 3 and a half now so we must of done a few things right!! :)

C.,

My son is 2 years old, today actually, and he loves pillows too. So my dad bought him a little travel pillow from Walmart when he was about a year old and he slept with it until February when we bought him "big boy" CARS bedding and now he sleeps with a regular sized pillow.

I would just let him take his nap until he gives it up himself. I did that with my son and one day he just didn't want to take it anymore. Hope this helps!

hey C., My daughter is 21 months and she just went from 2 naps to 1 when she turned 20 months...sometimes its still a struggle becuase she will take her nap after lunch at 1130 and sleep for a couple hours but then she still gets tired at around 5 sometimes so it might take a while but she definatly let me know when she was ready to give up one of the naps, she wouldnt sleep as long and she fought the first nap tooth ans nail! Once we transitioned her to one nap a day she slept a lot longer at night and for her second nap as well! so im sure he will give up the morning nap when hes ready! As far as the pillows go he should be ok by now to have a pillow with him if he can stand and roll over well! Although my daughte still doesnt sleep with one, she doesnt really like them all too much! You can find Good Jr pillows at walmart or target! You also might find them at toys r us! I hope i helped! Good luck!

I think it is safe. Around that time, I went to Wal-mart and bought a little travel pillow and my son used that until he got out of the crib. He just turned 3 and loves pillows.

If he needs the both naps, let him take them. He will let you know when he just needs one. Sleeping with a pillow is fine at his age. I just wouldn't get one that's too fluffy. That's me though.

I have had a pillow in my daughters bed since 11 months (ped. said okay) Just make sure to throw it into the dryer once a week to knock out the dust that accumulates that way no sinus issues develop.

Hi C.. With the pillow situation I would let him sleep with a pillow if he wants as long as you make sure if it has a pillow case that its not too big. You might want to find a pillow that doesnt require a case (maybe in the home section or a travel pillow) so you dont have to worry about the pillow case. My son loved sleeping with a pillow so I found a bigger pillow that I could put at the head of his crib and it fit perfectly (i think it might have been a queen size pillow instead of a regular pillow). Now both of mine are in twin beds and they sleep with regular pillows and do fine.

As far as the nap goes I would try one day and see how he does w/out a nap but if he still "needs" the nap let him take it. Does he sleep well at night with taking 2 naps a day?? If so I wouldnt worry about it until it seems to interrupt his night time scheudle.

Hi C., first of all, he is old enough for a pillow now if he can get up on one and lay on it now. Just go to wal mart or kmart or sears and you should be able to find a pillow you like but I just always used a regular pillow for all 5 of my children and I never had any problems with them! now as far as a morning nap goes, I would start now cutting it out! just keep him up later and later in the morning before letting him lay down and then let him sleep for about 30-45 minutes and then get him up! you will be able to tell if he needs more time or not by the way he acts when you get him up...just give it a try and see how he does! good luck!! My daughter gave up her morning nap at about 20 months... she just did it on her own. All of a sudden one day, she resisted going down for a nap so I let her stay up until it was time for the pm one & she never went down for a morning nap again. If he's still going down for one without resistance, he probably isn't ready to give it up. Sleep is very important [at least in our house!] so there's no need to eliminate it. Smart babies need their sleep :)

I am sorry but I havent read the other responses so hopefully I am not repeating but I will tell you from my own experience.. My son and daughter loved pillows.. they were about 15 months.. you can buy and inexpensive travel pillow or go to one step ahead's website and they have a kid sized pillow. As far as day naps.. hehe my 3 yr old has to have one or she is crankier than ever. My 4 yr old likes to do without one but that is the only naps they get. At daycare they have nap time right after lunch from about 11-2... but that includes getting them all to lay down... some kids need more sleep than others.. my son is tolerable without a nap but my daughter is so cranky and whiny.. i know here they have nap time in Kindergarten.. so the evening naps are done away with around here...
