Hi ladies i just have a question my daughter is 11 years old and is very thin well we have noticed that her breast bone sticks out and it looks like a pigeon breast. I looked in the internet about this and really didn't get any answers. Also when they checked her spine last year at school the nurse said it was a little crooked. I made a dr. Appt for her i just wondered if any of you have heard of this and if it causes any problesm. She is a very active little girl and it doesnt look like it has caused her any problems it just looks kinda weird. Thank you all

It sounds like she may have scoliosis or curvature of the spine. She is at the age where it starts becoming prominant. My sister had it, but she is 50 and I know the treatment is different and much better now. I'm sure the doctor can give you a difinitive answer and kudos to you for keeping such a sharp eye on her!

I don't know about the breast bone issue, but most curved spines are due to scoliosis. (If the spine is curved from side to side it is scoliosis. If the natural curves of the spine are over-exaggerated from the side view/profile it is kyphosis. Sorry! This is hard to explain without diagrams!) I think you need to have specialist look at this. Extra curves and twists can make other bones protrude and some hide. I was diagnosed with both of the above at 11, but nothing was done until I was 14. It was almost too late. I saw some improvement with treatment, but could have had a lot more success had something been done earlier. Prior to treatment, my skirts had to be hemmed at a slant and the zipper of my jeans looked crooked/slanted. I didn't have pain then, but from what I have heard and read severe curves left untreated can be painful later in life. I'm so glad you made an appointment now. Kids bones are so much more pliable and respond more to treatment than adults. I could say more, but I think you get the idea. I would love to hear an update, but you sound pretty busy. Blessings to you and yours! Holly

Hi C., I have a sister-in-law and nephew who are "pigeon breasted" & a daughter who slightly appears to be. It's never caused any problems for any of them.

Hi. I have never heard the term pigeon breast but it sounds like what I have. My breast bone protrudes out instead of in. It doesn't bother me and doesnt look "bad". I also have a curve in my spine. I dont have any problems from my breast bone but do have chronic back pain. I am interested to hear what you find out from the doctor :)

My little brother has this (predominantly on one side) he is 20 now and I can tell you that it has gotten worse over the years. We have tried to research it too without much luck
