Piercing Earrings?

A tattoo/peircing place is the best place to go. Not to be ANTI ....but I still belive in

My daughter does have ears pierced byt HER choice as well as a belly piercing. Tatto shop all the way.

anything that is hypoallergenic. I would go to a really nice jewelry store where they do it and ask questions acting like you plan to do it there. You might even be able to buy the posts there to use at the tattoo place. Some people are allergic to gold and some to silver. Try hypoallergenic and if not, try real gold. At 8 months I would be worried she would pull them out.

if you're going to get them done, you should go to a professional piercer.
they have all kinds of stainless steel jewelry there which is durable, and
typically inexpensive.

- by professional- I mean the people who work in piercing/tattoo shops.
that's where I would take my daughter when she gets her ears done.

LOL @ "Please don't give me any anti-piercing 'advice', because it's gonna happen. :)" Actually 8 months is considered late in my family. My sisters jumped all over me for not piercing my baby at 3 months.

In IL, doctors do not pierce anymore. When you go to the mall into Claire's or another store where they pierce baby's ears, they will let you know what's best for the baby. I believe it's 14k gold.

My only advice would be to ask for 2 people to do the piercing. Basically the ladies positioned on both ears and on the count of 3, they pierce at the same time. This way, your baby doesn't cry, think it's over, and then cries again. Have a bottle or binky ready for your baby. My kids cried for only 1 minute, it's over so fast.

the tattoo place will probably have the best trained staff, particularly if the do routine body piercing. If they have an option to do it "no gun" take that choice for sure, because it is painless, no sharp bang noise, no trauma. Also use 14+ carat gold. I chose little diamonds for my 10 month old, because they look really cute & match everything she wears. I also did it at 8 months, and was told it was a bit late because they are so much more aware than say a 3 month old. But trust me, 8 months is better than waiting till shes 4 or 5 or even 12. (had girls at those ages get pierced, not as easy as a baby). They have little studs with rounded backs now, that dont snag or poke when they sleep, and (weird as it sounds) they recommended no aftercare at all, no special solution (and they are perfectly healed!)

I have to say tho, babies move and mistakes are common, happened to both my last two girls getting the "double gun -where two people pierce both ears at the same time) chelsea had hers redone within 10 minutes, with the other baby I waited a couple weeks before getting the messed up one redone. You really got to hold her head tight! but you will love it they look so cute! good luck!

Ask your pediatrician. I know some actually will do it in their office.
I was always told surgical steel posts were a good bet for the first time.

I came from a family that didn't pierce ears so snuck and got mine done at 16 years old at a cheap shop in the local mall. Definitely not a venue I would recommend for your child. :)

Make sure to hold an ice cube on her ears if they are sore later. Okay, I am old, and had mine done years ago, but that's what I did.

*gulp* Taking an 8 month old to a tattoo place? Yikes! No, go to a reputable place that does ear peircing. I got my daughter's ears peirced at Peircing Pagoda. It's in PA but there's other places you can go as well. I mean, there is a moral issue here too. A tattoo parlor? LOL You can get something basic like a jewell or something and ask them which type of posts helps best in case she's sensitive. Me and my mother are both very sensitive with our ears so I got the recommended type of peircing posts and my daughter ended up being not sensitive at all, thankfully. We found out later with less expensive earrings that she's good to go. But please, skip the tattoo parlor! LOL

I took my youngest to her pediatritian office and they have only one kind I think is surgical steel but is gold color. And with my oldest It was in a beauty salon and is the same they don't ask what kind do you want , I think they're some special earings for piercing...hope this help....

you want the surgical stainless steel i believe. gold and other metals are actually not recommended for a first piercing since some people are allergic to it, and you really dont have a way of knowing since she is so little.

dont worry about this, i know some people try to freak you out. both my kids are done, at 3 and 1 1/2 years old. the three year old didnt even flinch. the younger cried for 1 minute and then was fine. the 1 1/2 year olds earring fell out and closed up, but it was okay because i was contemplating taking them out since they were crooked. this was done at a place that had 2 people do it at the same time.

so a year later we went to claires, all my litte girls idea even though she remembered it did in fact hurt. only one lady was working, she did them one at a time, and they are perfect. i wasnt vigilant with either of them with the cleaning(i did it once a day), and they never got infected or anything.

the advice i will give is to not get carried away with who does it. i would much rather have the woman at claires do them than my doctor. the doctor does way less on a monthly basis. and i do believe a big chain like claires cleans everythng just fine. the earrings themselved are opened right in front of you, and they are the actual things that peirces the ear, so they will always be sterile as long as you see them get opened. just make sure they are straight, and make sure your daughter has unattached lobes(if attached i would wait till she is older from experience).

and DONT change the earrings, not for way longer than it says. and realize they use special earrings with lock on backs. if you do change them while a baby, make sure to get the same backs. since changing into new earrings at christmas, we have lost 3 backs already. the peircing earrings really are made better. good luck

ok first of thats mean i know you said no advice but why torture your baby???? i dont get why parents want to hurt their kids, stupid anyway since you are going to torture her use stainless steal.

I agree with Claire's. They have a nice selection to choose from and they have infant earrings to choose from. They are generally smaller than regular earrings.

We just when to Claires at the mall and they had a decent selection to choose from. We did the sterling silver whenn my older dd was 1 and we have had no problems. Good luck.

LOVED the "no anti-piercing" line! Honestly, I think the tattoo place is fine. They have to meet health and safety standards or they will get shut down, so why not? I'm sure it's just as safe as a Claires or doctor's office.

Kudos to you for taking her to a tattoo shop. To all those who say Claire's or doctor's and other such places - I say you are crazy! A professional piercer as found in a tattoo shop has to be properly trained and licensed in order to practice his art. The professional will know use all sterile equipment and have learned proper placement for all piercings, including on infants (of course double-check that the piercer has experience with infants). The staff at the mall shops and even doctor's are not professionally trained and licensed to pierce. Most mall places just give the staff a quick training of what needs to be done and let's not even get into how unsanitary the piercing guns are (too many little spots that are not able to be cleaned properly). I speak from experience as someone who has almost 20 piercings and has had several friends who have done piercings both in the mall setting and as trained professionals at a tattoo shop.

My recommendation for jewelry is a simple small surgical steel capture ball ring. That's what all my piercings are done with initally as well as my daughter's when I had her pierced at 4 months old. They capture ball when placed properly remains securly closed that even fiddling infant fingers are not able to get it out. My daughter had her same earrings in from the time she was pierced till her 5th birthday when I finally bought her some new stud type earrings. Note - her rings NEVER came out! The ring allows for proper movement in order to clean the piercing and also allows comfort for sleeping. I know I can't stand sleeping on stud type earrings and neither can my daughter - I mean who really wants to get poked in the head by an earring all night? If you are concerned with allergic reaction to the metal (more likely if you have a reaction to certain metals in your piercings) then I would recommend the same type of ring, but in titanium. Titanium is more hypo-allergetic.

I would recommend maybe a little dose of tylenol about 30 minutes before you have her ears done to help ease the pain. And also one ear at a time. Any professional piercer will give her the time needed (if necessary) to calm down before doing the next ear. My daughter did cry and took about 5 minutes in between each ear, but the piercer gave her the time needed to calm down before moving onto the next ear.
