Piercing Baby's Ears

I'd like to get my daughter's ears pierced. She is four months old and I understand that if I want it done, nows the time since she is less likely to play with her ears. I'd like to hear from moms who had their daughters' ears pierced at such a young age. Please tell me what to expect. Will she be in pain for long? Is keeping the ears clean a huge hassle? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks mommies!

Hi C.,
I pierced my daughters ears when she was exactly 2 months old. She had her 2 month vaccinations which included her tetnus shot and waited 2 days and headed to the mall. She cried mostly from the load noise the piercing gun makes and stopped soon after. Cleaning was not a problem. They give you solution to dab on and have you twist the earrings to make sure the skin doesn't heal to the earring. She never ever fussed with her ears. If you are going to do it now is the time. Just prepare your heart to fall to the floor when she does cry. It'll be ok. Now my daughter looks fabulous!!!:) lol!!!

C.,

I had my daughters done at 4 months after she had her tetanus shot. I spent the extra money to have the 14K gold earing put in because they are supposed to be better. She ended up with an infection and they were very red and would not heal. I had to take them out. I cleaned them twice a day with the solution that was provided and I just think she rejected the metal for some reason. If I could do it again I wouldn't. I know a lot of people have good expierences with doing it at a young age. If you have any skin sensitivities or skin allergies in your family I might pass on it. I'm just glad they healed with no scar. I plan on waiting until she is old enough to make the decision on her own. Good luck!

oh thats a very good question. i got my daughters ears done at 10 weeks (shes 15mos now). i didnt find it hard for me at all to keep them up you just have to clean and turn the earings a few times a day. i took her to the peircing pagoda in the mall (they use all steril guns unlike wal mart and do a free check up 4 weeks after they peirce ears). my daughter cried for about 5 minutes after it was done (just like with shots). they do give the ear care solution (but i didnt use it i used neosporne on my daughters ears). i also only cleaned her ears for about 2 weeks and then just stuck to turning them (because they more i touched them the more she touched them). yes they dont tend to play with their ears as much at that age and it takes out a lot of fear of getting them done later on. i do however really recamend taking her to the peircing pagoda (i have sent many friends there with their babies and they were very satisfied). good luck i hope this is helpful!!!

I did my twin girls ears at 3 months. I took them after a good nap in the car and I didnt feed them until we were done. Once I gave them a bottle they forgot all about the pain. It easier to keep clean young, since they arent rolling in dirt, or playing with them. Clean them while you feed her so she is distracted. My girls still love to wear pretty earrings and its fun to keep them girly when at almost 3 they are always wrestling and playing in dirt!

Hi C.!
I pierced my daughters ears almost 2 months ago when she was 8.5 months old. I thought it might be too late but she is just now finding them and doesn't even tug on them, she just feels them. Its like its a part of her. She did really good. She cried less then when she gets her shots. They did one and the other immediately after and she only started crying after the second one. And only cried for MAYBE 3 minutes. I tried to BF her and she was not interested. I stood up and went to pay and she was done crying. I am so happy i did it! The cleaning is easy since she was still small she didn't put up a fight. she has not had any problems with them at all. I did end up changing the ear rings because the original ones stuck out and would get caught on her blankie (a knitted blanket) and she would wake up crying at night. a few times the ear ring came out but we just put it back in and it was fine. so i bought 14K pink diamond earings that lay flatter and we have not had a problem since.
Good luck!!

Hi C.,

I pierced my daughter's ears around 4 months. Make sure she has her tetnaous shot before as well (avoid infections) It was quick and she cried a little. Pain was for a couple hours but just make sure you keep the ears clean .. run warm water (for soothing) with a cotton ball and try not to mess with her ears the first couple days. She will just fine after.

Hello C.! This is not bad at all! I pierced my daughter's when she was 5 months. She cried while she was actually getting the piercing, but by the time we left the stand (Santa Anita Mall - stand just towards Claires when leaving the food court) she was fine. I did take her binky and had her bottle ready so she would be content and she was. Cleaning the ears wasn't bad at all. I just used some alcohol on a q-tip every few days and she gave me no trouble.

There were a few months she was interested in playing with her earrings - suprisingly cheaper earrings like the sheets of them you can buy at Walmart for 5 dollars have an edge on them making it harder to take off - very effective. Also adding the clear rubber backs in addition is effective too.

Good luck and let me know how she does!

My now almost 9 year old had ears were pierced at 4 months after her shots. Definietly get 14k gold everything to avoid allergic reactions. Cleaning them wasn't different than taking care of her umbilical cord.

Make sure that there are 2 people who can do both ears at the same time and sit her on your lap to hold her. Maddie didn't cry any worse than when she received her shots. I think doing each ear one at a time would have been impossible though.

No problems with infectins until she was three and she never played with them. people still called her a boy though even with pierced ears! good luck!

Why pierce them now? What's wrong with waiting until she's a child and wants to have her ears pierced. Seems a needless thing to do for a baby and you are leaving her open to infections, discomfort...
