Hi, my 3 yr old only wants yogurt and applesauce or he won't eat. I realize that these 2 choices are healthy. I was wondering if anyone had tried witholding your child's choice of foods and if he/she didn't eat the food you provide for them, then there's no other food. Have you taken their food away if they don't eat the food that's prepared for that meal? If you have experienced something similar, please let me know how your experience, your child's experience was, and how was it, etc? I appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far, I've tried withholding food if he doesn't eat it. He didn't budge for an entire week. He got constipated with a tummy ache and I wasn't strong enough to continue witholding the food anymore. I'm back to feeding him food w/yogurt and applesauce. I felt bad for him and also felt bad that I didn't make it work. I'll try again after some time. Ugh! Thank you everyone. I really appreciate your advices and encouragement. I really do...

I have experienced this problem with my now four year old daughter. What we did was give her the meal that I prepared, and if she ate at least half of it should could have her choice. This worked well with her, and eventually she quit wanting something different and now eats all of her food. It is a stage that most kids go through. Be patient it will not last forever. Just dont always give in to him, let him know this is what you made and he has to eat it. If he does then he can have yogurt or applesauce as a treat afterwards.

My son only wanted to eat yogurt cereal bars. That's what I fed him and after a few weeks he was tired of it As long as he's eating don't worry.

My three year old son is the same way. Most things that I make he will not eat or I have to force him to eat it. If he doesn't eat it then he doesn't get anything else to eat. He loves to drink juice and eat cheese and yogurt. I just won't let him get those things when he doesn't eat his lunch or supper. It usually works. I have gotten to the point to where if he eats at least 3-5 bites then I feel alright about it. Just keep trying and don't give him snacks or juices and it might work.

with my son it was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, so i stopped offering him anything but pb&j. it didn't take long before he started requesting other food items.

I dont have first hand experience with this situation b/c my son is only 10 months. Because I was raised with A LOT of siblings, I would suggest to you to hold out. I do believe that 3 is old enough to understand that he should eat the food that's provided. THEN, if he eats some of the other food he should be rewarded with his choice of yogurt or applesauce.

I had a very picky eater.
I just put a little--maybe 2 other things on his plate and he had to eat that first before he got the favorite items. For instance he had to eat his sandwich first (he liked it, but would rather eat junk food. LOL) before he got his chips.

He had to eat 3 bites of his main course - mac n cheese, hot dog, eggs, whatever- before he got his bread. So he was not just filling up on the other thing that only covers a few basic nutrional needs. He was getting some protien through the cheese and milk, some vitamens through his greens and veggies, some calcium, etc. But I also was very lenient in that he could put ketchup on his green beans, mustard on his other food--whatever made it more appealing to him, without making a huge mess of course.

He is still a picky eater today but because of these rules I could take him anywhere and know that he would quietly eat a few bites of what was served without comment. ;-) And I knew I could always find something for him to eat to at least tide him over.

Good luck,

We have the same problem right now with our three year old. She only wants to eat what she wants, and nothing else. But most of the time if she doesn't like dinner she will ask for an apple or banana. We have chosen not to keep those fruits from her even though she doesn't eat her dinner. And only because we know that if we do, then she won't eat at all and then will wake up in the middle of the night and be hungry. So, just hang in there, I know we still are. LOL!! But I think that as long as he is eating something, especially with it being healthy, then let him eat it. But every once in a while, it wouldn't hurt to make something that he will eat. Don't worry, he will eventually eat dinner!

Good luck!

Sounds like a normal three year old to me. Kids go through phases where they find a food they like and that's all they want to eat. Dr's judge a child's nutritional intake over a one week or two. Just keep offering other foods to go along with his favorites and eventually he will get out of the phase. I have been through the mac and cheese phase, yogurt phase, cereal phase, ect. Nothing is ever permanent with kids, lol.

Hello,
Yes, my son is very picky. If I don't give him what he wants, he won't eat for days! Look up thesneakychef.com, she suggests pureeing veggies and sneaking it into their food of choice. Yogurt and applesauce would be easy to desguise the veggies. Good luck.
