My daughter will be 7 months old on Suday. When we stared solids at 6 months she did really well. She liked everything except peas, now all the sudden she wont eat anything but oatmeal with banana's mixed in. I've tired mixing her cereal with other things but she takes 1-2bits and then wont open her mouth or pushes the spoon away. I breastfeed her, but I mix her cereal with formula. I don't know why she's being picky all the sudden. I know the baby food isn't too importatnt but I'd like to get her to try other things so when she does need more than breastmilk she'll eat differnt things. Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone had this happen?

What can I do next?

HI~
It comes down to texture, at first it was new and the flavor was fun and new but when it comes down to it, texture wins. I would say always offer the real food, and she might surprise you one day-Just have a backup plan of milk as always... When she is ready to get past texture she will love it....

what about trying the Gerber Cereal already mixed with fruit, my son loves it and I find it much easier than mixing it myself. A few cents extra isn't all that bad in the end is how I look at it.

My baby is 9 months and the solid baby food lost its appeal as he was watching us eat. I still buy the fruits, but changed to the Gerber pick up style food and make scrambled eggs, toast, etc. He loves those Biter Biscuits. I chomps away with only two teeth.

don't stress yourself out, like everyone else, as long as she is getting the breastmilk and is eating something, let her go. Next week or month it will be something else.

My first inclination is to tell you not to worry about it. Your daughter is only 7 months old and is probably getting whatever she needs from your breastmilk and the infant cereal. There is really no reason to think that if you can't get her to eat different things now then she will not eat a health variety when she gets older. Actually, I'm concerned that forcing the issue with her now will be the thing to cause eating issues in the future. I'd suggest not bothering right now with the foods that she doesn't want. You can always try again in a month or so. Good luck!

What kind of faces are you making when you feed her? My 16 months old tried that when I first started feeding him. I discovered that if I fed him with a smile, and said yum, and good, that he would actually like the food. The more he'd push it away the more I would smile, and tell him how good it was. Also I held off on more harsh tasting things until about 8 months or so. The best first veggies are the ones with the more sweet taste like squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes, and fruits. If are mixing cereal with the veggies, and other fruits you might want to stop doing that. It might be too thick for her. Another idea is to make the baby food yourself...if you have time that it is. My homemade mashed carrots were much better then store bought because I used sweet baby carrots. Another thing is to consider buying a copy of the book Super Baby Food. It tells you how to make your own baby food as well as what foods are right for baby--when. It's a great book.

Hi D.,

I am not an expert but sometimes they do this. As long as you are giving her her breast milk above all else that is what she has to have. As for mixing the milk with cereal alot of babys don't like it that way. Keep giving her the milk and if you want her to have cereal, then mix it with fruits and veggies to get her to eat it just make sure she gets her milk if nothing else.

My son had a similar problem it was just a phase. My doctor told me to wait it out and within a few weeks he was back to eating everything and wouldn't eat the food he was fixated on.
Just don't force other foods you will only frustrate yourself.

Don't push her. Feeding is supposed to be pleasant and you wouldnt want her to get upset and associate eating with frustration. It is possible that the formula may be having an effect on her. Try mixing her food with expressed breast milk and see how she does. Formula is extremely difficult to digest and she may be having a tough time with it and is now boycotting. Just a thought. Also keep in mind, although she may have gotten off to a good start with solids, many EBF babies, when left to their own devices, will start solids on their own later than 6 months. So maybe she's deciding shes not ready after all. And that's ok, because food at this point really isn't for nutrition. She gets all of that from you. So hang in there, let her guide you. Every baby reacts differently and they almost always know what they need more than we think we know, or more than our peds know. Good luck!

Maybe it's a matter of all the stuff they are doing to our food these days. Did you try organic food? There may be a good reason why she would reject the food. Take a look at this site, maybe that will help: http://www.plumorganics.com/ ,or check out your local health food store, or grocery that supplies organics.
