My husband and I would really like to start our 4-year-old in piano lessons. We have a piano and he's always been interested in it. The other day my husband taught him how to play "Hot Cross Buns" in about a minute, and he was playing it with both hands at the same time - and he learned the names of the keys too! A piano teacher lives across the street from us but she says kids shouldn't begin private lessons until they are at least 7 years old. That seems like way too long to wait.
We live in the South Arlington area and would love to know of any teachers or studios in the area that offer piano lessons to this age group. Thanks!

You can call and try DOSHER MUSIC on Arbrook (and Cooper). They have been great for us.

Good luck.
I know there are exceptions to this case and you will hear about child prodogy's who play when they are 3 or 4, but the teacher is right. I also teach piano and begin at about 6 as they are learning to read. I make it fun and use methods that they enjoy. Then as they get older, the pieces get harder. Let him have fun now and see if he is still interested in about 2 years. I began at 5 and my teacher recognized I was copying her and playing by ear, not learning to read music. I stopped and began again at 10 and the rest is history!
If your neighbor says he is not ready then he is not ready..for her as a piano teacher. You have to find someone who will take someone that early. Your expectations have to be appropriate. Will he really practice a piece everyday? Will it burn him out? Try it out for a while but don't force it.

You can start your own child with a cute program called Music for Little Mozarts. The "teacher" part is on the CD, so you don't have to play difficult stuff to accompany. It comes with a cute little mouse and bear and there is plenty of fun if you do the music/movement activities, and add rhythm instruments. Just be sure to get the teacher guide.
I believe what you need to be lookng for is a teacher that teaches sudoku music lessons. I wish I could help more...
