I will be starting a stay at home job and need to make a decision on what to do about a dedicated phone line. Does anyone have an opinion about Vonage, the internet phone thing??? I was thinking about getting a second cell phone, but I really will only be taking and making work calls from my house so I'm not sure what to do and I'm open to suggestions. I don't want the local phone company coming in and drilling a new jack or coverting an exsisting one, so my options seem to be cell or Vonage.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm still looking into my options, but I googled Vonage and found sites where people were complaining. It seems as though the small problem is the "faint" background hum heard on both ends of the line during calls (I remember that now that I think of it with a friend who has Vonage-- it was more than just faint and I found it annoying and difficult to hear her sometimes)... but the biggest complaint by far was tons of people had problems with ENDING their service-- the customer service was awful and everyone was charged fees they were not expecting. I don't know how long I'll have this job and don't want problems when I want to end whatever service I sign up for. TMobile (the cell company I have now) has a "no contract" plan I'm considering

I've had Vonage for 6 years and I'm not sure what "hum" people are complaining about. We have never had any problems with the connection or quality of our calls. And the pricing is great. Not sure about cancelling as we have not needed or wanted to do that.

Good luck :)

Take a look into skype, in my experience its cheaper and has better quality than vonage. We use it for our business and it works well.

i disagree with joann c, i find skype to be less convenient and reliable than vonage. we had it for a few years, and it was great; felt just like a regular phone line. we cancelled, though, and just use our cells now.

We have OOMA-It's $10.00 per month or $100 if you pay a year up front. Also, it gives you 2 phone lines, answering service, and you can go online and see all of the call activity and check your messages.

I have vonage and we love it.
There is no difference in quality of calls between a regular land line and Vonage.
