Persistant Stye

My daughter has had a stye for approx. 5 months. I've taken her to 3 different Pediatricians and they all confirm that it is a stye. We've tried hot compress & tea bags. It's on it's last leg but the thing just won't go away. Has anyone ever had this problem with their kids. I'm not sure if I should take her to an eye doctor to get another opinion. My daughter is 3 1/2. I got a few styes but never this young. I must be doing something wrong.

What can I do next?

Hi J.,when my daugter was about 2 or 3 she had a chalazion which is a stye but deeper in the lid. She had it for about 7 or 8 months. Her eye doctor suggested that I heat up an egg, test the temp. and then place it on the stye everyday. He said to use the egg because it stays warm longer than a damp cloth. well it was a mission having her keep that on her eye, i would read her stories to distract her. one day she woke up and it was gone. maybe it worked or maybe it just went away by itself but its worth a try.... hope she gets better soon.

A stye is an indication that her immune system is depressed. You have seen that treating the symptom hasn't worked- that is because it is a symptom.
Get ALL sugar out of her diet. Sugar depresses the immune system, really awful stuff.
Check eat reight 4 your bllood type, and feed her accordingly, WestonPrice. com is also a great referance.
I'd get her probiotics- at her age esp bifids which boosts immune system.
best, k

Look closely at her immune system. The eyes and skin are first to tell what is going on inside. Probiotics, Nordic Naturals cod liver oil, Nordic Naturals Nordic Berries vitamins, reduce toxic load by feeding all organic. Take child off dairy completely. ALso look into NAET treatment to eliminate allergies. Once you support the immune system things will clear up. Another good boost is Juice Plus or Immunity Take Care.

You're not doing anything wrong. But when a stye is hanging around for months it usually means it's turned into something called a chalazion. And for that, you do need to see an ophthalmologist because the only way to get rid of it is with a simple in patient procedure. Dr. Bruce Miller is a pediatric ophthalmologist with a good reputation. He's located in Plantation and Boca. His Plantation number is ###-###-####‎.

My son had eye infection after eye infection (his ended up being herpes simplex 1 of the eye). He was misdiagnosed by 2 different eye drs.. I HIGHLYYYYYYYY recommend you seeing Dr. Friedman at ###-###-####. He's a pediatric eye doctor. He takes his time, answers ALL questions and doesn't try to rush you out the door, etc... I've been to him 5 times since July with my son's eye problems....He's even called me after hours from his cell phone to check in on my son.. He's one of the nicest dr's I've ever come in contact with in FL. He has offices in Boca, Boynton and Juno.. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you seeing him..
Good luck!!!!

Great advice from everyone, as always! You aren't doing anything wrong - if only kids came with a manual.

When my son entered high school, all of a sudden he had almost constant styes. We figured out that he was allergic to AXE body spray (and other strong body sprays). His first semester, he had PE and all the boys would drown themselves in it instead of hitting the shower! Luckily, problem solved. Check for irritants. Perfumes or smoke are most likely if that's the cause. Good luck!

Roman Chamomile 3 drops in 4oz water, put cotton in water and place on closed eye on stye. worked for me. but since you are using this on your eye, don't just buy cheapo essential oil. you need high quality good EO. natures sunshine is where i buy all of mine. you can look on this website. www.mynsp.com/healthykidshappymommy.

Hi J.,

I wrote this to Nicole a few months ago...

"A stye usually is a sign of a deficiency in Vitamin A which is a sign that the immune system is not working at an optimum level. If your four year old is not on an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex (one that does not create free radicals) I would get her on one immediately. I can recommend one if you like. Food is a great source for nutrition, it's just not packed full of it like it used to be so you have to be a very diligent shopper. Short term, you can also go to the health store and see if there is any liquid or chewable vitamin A for her as well. I've never seen Vitamin A in another form individually than a gelcap...

All these ladies are right about the compresses (a warm Raspberry leaf tea is best)but compresses just attack the symptom really and not the cause. They are also soothing if your little one will sit still for it."

Hope this helps. God bless!

I recommend taking her to an eye doctor. I say this because my son had one and it went away on it's own, but when I took him to the eye doctor, he asked me why I didn't bring him in? I said I didn't know he could help. He said he could. Good Luck.

You should see an eye doctor for this. My younger sister had one like that and it just kept coming back. They eye doctor had to actually remove it. It was an in office procedure that was very simple and she has never had one since!

J.,

If you are not changing the linen and wash cloths, etc that your daughter uses daily, you are only re-infecting the eye. As you treat it, use a different rag/towel, etc and see what happens. The warm compress should have worked.

Jen,

I would take her to an ophthomolgoist. It may be a Chalazion- which is a granuloma of eyelid glands along the eyelid. It sometimes requires surgery.

My girlfriend's daughter had it when she was 5 yr old. Had the surgery & did great. My girlfriend did all that she could do but still needed surgery. It looked horrible until the surgery was done.

you could look into homeopathics at your local health food store. They are like little sugar pills with no side effects. And they do work.

I've had a stye or two. What always works for me is to use those cotton pads and really warm water. Just soak one and put it on the eye with a little pressure, then squeeze it, and then put warm water and start the process again. You will have to use a few pads, as they will stop absorbing the water. I do it for a few days and it disappears. I hope this works for your child. I would think it would work for children as well as adults like myself. Good luck.
