Hello Momma's,
I am just wondering if any of you have had to deal with Perioral Dermititas. My sweet little 6 yr old daughter has it and it is HORRIBLE looking. She has autism and will not let me clean it with anything, gentle stuff of course. The dr. gave us a RX, but it seems to be making it worse! I am calling the dr tomorrow and seeing what else to do, but have read a lot and not sure there is anything else to do. The skin is cracking so bad right now and she is pickng it and it is bleeding. I can NOT get her to stop..I just feel so helpless. I have learned to deal with her special autism, but now having this just makes my heart sink. The other day she said to grandma, "Grandma, I have a rash, but I am still pretty!" Tears came to my eyes when my mom told me.. She is still beautiful, but this rash looks terrible and from what I have read, it is ongoing and will not just go away..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the momma and pappa who helped! I actually got her into the dermatologist yesterday and she told us to stop using the first cream and gave us something different. It looks so much better today :) I am also using cetiphil moisterizer which is helping. I love learning about the products that you all use. I am a huge fan of trying to use things that are natural too. We are in a great area for help with autism and I am using it a ton. We do have a good handle on it. I had just mentioned it because it is hard enough to have any kid stay still for meds, but with autism, it is so so so hard! Thanks again all!

Hi B., I am a Daddy but I think we can help! I work for a Custom Medication Pharmacy here in the Metroplex, we may be able to customize (compound) your beautiful daughter a lip balm, lollipop or oral bandage with healing agents, and make it taste good. When dermatitis hits usually topical steroids are prescribed and they can really burn especially on open wounds.

I had POD and I felt disfigured. I had to sign my son in and out of school each day and it seemed like everyone wanted to talk to me during that time! I found myself apologizing for the way I looked. It was so painful. I couldn't smile or eat without cracking and bleeding. My doctor gave me something that made it worse, and I didn't want to use hydro-cortisone which weakens the skin, so I went to Whole Foods and read every label on the lip balms, and picked out Love Your Lips by MyChelle. It's a fat lip balm that covers more than just your lips. I felt immediate relief. The next day, the healing was so noticeable, my mom said, "Whatever you did to your lips, put that all over your chin too!" I went back for more MyChelle products! I purchased their hydrating, anti-inflammatory Fruit Enzyme Mist that gave me instant relief! I also got the Deep Repair Cream. My POD was healed up within a week, but I was left with deep hyper-pigmentation, so I used their Apple Brightening products, which were amazingly effective as well. That was about three years ago, and I never got it again.

B.,
Some children with autism also have dietary sensitivities. Celiac disease causes dermititas. I don't know if the Dr's have ruled out this diagnosis but it might be worth looking into. The science behind a gluten free- casein free diet for autistic children isn't great but I can tell you from first hand experience that I have a wheat intolerance that most Dr.'s don't recognize or diagnois. My son also gets severe migraines from MSG and this is not substantiated by the medical community. We know these intolerances are acurate because whenever I consume wheat, I get extreme stomach aches, When I don't eat it, my stomach is fine. If you google autism and gluten free diets, you should come up with lot's of information. I have a good friend who had doctor diagnosed "excema" for over 20 years and just recently discovered it was caused by eating wheat.
Here are a few tips for helping the excema: Use a very mild detergent for washing clothes or change detergents every time you buy a new container. Cut back on the amount of detergent used. Very little is actually needed to clean most clothes. Do not ever use dryer sheets, they are full of irritating chemicals. Use very mild soap and shampoo and only bathe once a week or when absolutely necessary. There are many soaps available for excema. thesoaplady.com, has excellent handmade soap that won't irritate sensitive skin. I have heard that oatmeal baths are very soothing, but have never needed one. Wear cotton clothing especially socks and underwear. Synthetic materials trap sweat which can irritate dermatitis.
Hope this helps.

Hi Brandi,
I had this about 7 years ago, and it was so embarrassing! I went to a dermatologist to get the diagnosis. He wanted to put me on 8 weeks of antibiotics and I declined because I was also having yeast infections and knew that would make it worse. He said I could try this "Metro" antibx cream. He told me it might be worse before it gets better and it doesn't alwasy work but I went ahead and got the Rx filled. But after I read the paperwork that came with the cream and read that you should not use if you are pregnant I figured this must be nasty stuff and I didn't want to put it on my face.

SO, then I went to a naturopath (Ayurvedic doctor actually) and he took one quick look at it and said it was yeast on my face. He told me to stop ALL sugar and dairy and you know what, after a few days, it started clearing up and after a few weeks, it was completely gone and I've never had any problems since. I just had to stay off the sugar for a couple of months. This might be hard with a kiddo, but I would try to eliminate it as best you can and get on a good probiotic. Good luck!

I do not know about Perioral Dermititas other than it being a skin disease. I looked it up on the net. I will tell you what other people do about other skin diseases such as psoriasis or eczema and it works. They stop using anything toxic that comes in contact with the skin. That includes any lotions, soaps, laundry detergent, etc. The list is enormous. The people have huge success uses Shaklee household cleaners. It is non-toxic (for over 50 years), highly concentrated so you use very little and the eczema goes away and the psoriasis with a little more help like fish oils, etc. goes away. You may want to try it. If so, you can go to http://nontoxiccleaners.myshaklee.com. I also have info on autism and some really good books if you are interested.

You live in an area where there are many homeopaths. Take her to a homeopath for a full complete cure. You have an Autisitic child. Do you know that the U of O has one of the best programs for Autistic children.
Your child is very intelligent and responsive. All those sensation phenomena she has are part and parcel of Autism and can be treated.

A good homeopath will also be able to treat her Autism.

I am so sorry for your troubles. I have a friend whose 8 year old daughter suffers terribly from something similar, but does not have autism. They finally took her to a homeopathic doctor and had terrific results. While I am not normally someone to recommend such an alternative course, one of the things that the family believes to have made a huge difference is her diet. When she is eating only the foods that fall on the "safe" list, her skin condition improves considerably. Sounds like it may be worth a try. Good luck and your daughter is very lucky to have such a caring mom !

If you're open to more natural remedies, you might consider Chinese medicine (acupuncture and herbs). Or at least just the herbs part if your daughter won't tolerate the acupuncture. Chinese herbalism is great for getting to the bottom of skin problems so that they don't come back after treatment ceases.

If you have any questions about Chinese medicine, feel free to message me!

Cut her fingernails super short. It might help her from scratching deeply.

The only other thing I can think of is biofeedback. If she is high functioning, it might just help. Bless her sweet little heart!
