Periods After Baby

Yesterday, I got my first period after baby; she is almost one. (Yay breastfeeding for keeping it away this long!)
So far it is MUCH heavier than it ever was before I got pregnant. I used to have very light periods that only lasted 2 days. Now, I am soaking thru one pad an hour. I'm just wondering if this is normal for the first one? Did other moms experience such a change after baby? Can I expect them ALL to be like this (I hope not).
Anything you can share on what you went through would be great.

Thanks!

EDIT- It was only heavy for about a day and a half, then tapered off, but it did last for 7 days. Much longer than the 2 it used to be. Just hoping it will lighten up next time :)

What can I do next?

I am not an OB or midwife but I do remember at some point having a conversation with my midwife about a similiar scenerio. I vaguely recall her telling me it had to do with the lining shedding back to normal. When there is no period after baby for a while the lining is not completely 'cleaned up' to its original state. So the first few periods are way heavier than normal. I also didn't bleed much for a LONG time with my 2nd but then I had a heavy one the first time or two and now I have a normal one a year and half later. So hang in there -- it'll be ok but also keep in mind that periods do not go back to the same as b4 kids. Sometimes its lighter and other times it becomes heavier for women. Just depends. And with each kid it is TOTALLY different postpartum.

I believe it is normal for them to be heavier, but one pad an hour sounds excessive. You may just want to give a ring to your OB to clarify. Also your PMS/periods may be different than before. Many woman say that even their PMS is worse after baby. So I wouldn't expect it to be EXACTLY the same as before you got pregnant.

I personally think it is quite normal after not having a period for so long. However, my only concern would be if your soaking a through a super maxi pad within an hour I would call my doctor to qlarify things are ok. But for myself after having five kids each period after was different after having each one of them. Now I am lucky to say that before kids I was having my period for at least a week sometimes longer to now having it for 24 to 48 hours! I have it heavy for one day and then I am done or light spotting for another day. So everyone is different and after every child is different. But for your own peace of mind, call your doctor and ask them what they think in regards to your problem. Better safe than sorry! Good luck to you.

It sounds like a lot, but I do think that could be normal, given that it is the first time. My daughter's now 18 months old, and my periods are lighter than they were before, if that gives you any hope.

Keep in mind how long it has been since you had a period. Almost what 21 months? I bet if everything is normal with you it will get better. I would call the doc just to be safe, but next month it may be back to normal.Your body is trying to get back to its regular self. Give it a chance to heal. BUt I would check with the doctor or nurse to put my mind at ease.
Good Luck to you!

It is very normal for your periods to change. With each child it changed. Now that I'm done it seems to change every quarter. It is normal as your body changes to a whole bunch of things going on inside and outside the body. Do you have one super heavy day and the rest are fairly normal or are you having more than two super heavy days? If it continues to be heavy and you are at your annual pap I would mention it to your doctor and any other symptoms you may be having just to rule out fibriods or endometreosis (sp?).

I think this is normal. Although I don't recall my periods being so horrificly heavy after my first child, this time they have been! I'm on my 3rd period (have a 9 month old) and the first one was insanely heavy for days and lasted over a week. My periods used to be much lighter and shorter. Last month was a bit better but still a very heavy flow compared to what I was used to. This month so far seems to be about the same.

I experienced the same thing after my first pregnancy. It seems I am still heavier than before but it did get a LOT better than the first few months. Just make sure you double up or change your pad/tampon frequently.

I can't share other pregnancies because I only had that one. I also nursed for the same time period. It will get better though. It freaked me out at first too and I wish someone warned me:p

I know this is about six months later, but I just wanted to jump on here to say thanks to everyone who responded. I am having the same issue as A., and it is actually frightening! I soaked through a SuperPlus, through my clothes, and to my bed in just 3 hours. Like you all said, I am assuming that because it has been about 21 months since a normal period, I should expect something crazy, but this is ridiculous. Oye! I will call my OB/Gyn in the morning and report back.

Thanks again!
