Period on Vacation

Hi Everyone! My family is taking a much needed cruise in May. (yay!) It's just my luck that my period is due the exact day we leave. I am not taking any birth control (husband had a vasectomy) and really didn't like the way the pill made me feel. But this is probably my only option, right? (to go to doc and get them for a couple months and take them continuously so I won't get my period)
Thanks!

Edit: I just wanted to add that before kids, i took the pill for many years without problems (no breakthrough bleeding) and once in a while skipped the inactive pills to "miss" my period. Worked well back then.

And Yes, my periods are pretty heavy and uncomfortable...i just wanted to be able to really enjoy this cruise. (tampons don't work for me)

What can I do next?

I just came back from vacation in November and was on my cycle. The vacation can be a little altered when this happens. I used tampons and I didn't even notice that they were there. I had a good time. I would try to plan something because it would be even nicer to not have to worry about a cycle.

Good Luck!

It might work, but some people experience "breakthrough bleeding" or get their period anyway until their bodies get used to it. Best to talk to your doctor.

I personally recommend the Diva Cup. It takes a few cycles to get used to, but it's like not having your period at all once you get the hang of it! Plus no leaking, and no embarrassing string.

Talk to your GYN and ask what she would recommend. It's good that you are getting a jump start on this now.

This is a great question and I'm sure a lot of women have been in this predicament. I'm going to come back and see what answers you get!

Personally, I wouldn't go to that extent to avoid my period for a vacation, but I guess you could always ask your doc.

Um... it doesn't work like that. You can take the "continuous pill" but you still have breakthrough bleeding. Seriously... talk to your doctor about your options, but you may just have to deal and enjoy the sun!

My friend recently prepared to hike the entire Appalachian trail, meaning that she would be literally on the mountain, hiking, for about 5 months. She learned that people who do this routinely get a shot (I think it was something like deprovera) and do not get their period the entire time, and do not have to bring pills along or remember to take them daily. She got the shot and did not have a period for 6 months. It's also how the women on reality shows like Survivor can be in the jungle for 6 weeks with no period, and not taking pills. There are definitely options- call the doc!

I'm not sure what the problem is. Are your periods painful or heavy? Otherwise if it is a water issue can't you use tampons? Unless you are referring to the canoodeling you want to do with hubs then yea, you'd have to go to your GYN if you don't want it at that time. Have fun on the cruise.

There are many herbs that can help stop your period. Shepherd's purse is a powerful anti-hemorrhagic herb. Lady's mantle is not as powerful but often works well. Herbs work better for some than for others, so I would try it now to see if any of them will work for you when you need it. Here is one site with instructions for teas. If you do a search for "herbs to stop menstruation" you can find other sites as well.

Indeed there is no need to have periods so often. In olden times, women were pregnant half their lives and did not have nearly as many periods as we do now. Taking birth control pills continuously is a good option, some doctors recommend you stop every 3 months to have a cycle and others think one cycle a year is enough. I would just ask the doctor for a 3-6 month prescription and start taking it before your cruise so you can check with the doctor if you have side effects. I took BC pills for years before kids but after my kids the same kind caused swollen knuckles and joints that went away when I stopped taking the pill, so try them out before you need to effect. Good luck and enjoy the vacation!

I take a non estrogen BC pill, and only get my period when I forget to take it. I have only forgot to take it once in the last year (Christmas Eve lol) and have only had 1 period in teh last year. I went to my Dr to get another prescirption and ended up seeing the PA. She said it's completely normal not to have a period on this type of BC, but I have to remember to take it at the same exact time everyday.
It's what they gave me when I tried to nurse, I think it's called Jollivette? They either called it a low dose or a non estrogen pill, and I remember it was specific for nursing moms. I have continued to take it, even though im not nursing, because there's no side effects for me (I had horrible side ffects with other BC pills).
Good Luck! Have fun!

I have a friend that uses a sort of cup that she inserts and it catches all of her period. She "empties" it once a day and that is that. I found it difficult to deal with but she likes it a lot. But I also like the advise about asking your OB or pack a bunch of Midol?

Have a great trip, Nat
