Ok, so I have my period on time every month. Every 21-28 days, and lately I have been noticing that about 1 week before i get my period I start to break out w/ acne really bad. But most of the time it is only on my left side of my face. I have my regular face washing routine, and i follow it, but i still break out. I have always been prone to bad break-outs. But i am a wife and mother of 2 and i am 28 years old, why is this still happening to me? it is very frustrating. Another thing i have been having problems with is that same thing, about 1 week before my period i get really bad migraines and nothing helps. Excedrin migraine, heating pad, cold rags.... nothing. I just don't know what to do. I know i carry most of my stress in my neck and shoulder's so i thought about maybe seeing a massage therapist on a regular basis and schedule it around my period. Any suggestions would be great! I am open to any-thing to try at this point! Thanks and have a great week every-one!

What can I do next?

Just checking - does your regular face-washing routine include a gentle/mild cleanser followed by a toner and then oil-free lotion? A lot of people who have break-outs think they shouldn't use moisturizers or lotions because it will clog the pores. However, if you're not using an oil-free moisturizer then the washing of the skin makes it dry and the skin will produce more oil to compensate for the dryness, further exacerbating the problem. I'm sure you already know all this but I thought I'd include it just in case.

Are you opposed to using oral contraception to manage these issues? Do a little bit of research on anti-androgenic birth control pills. The symptoms you describe could be a result of an overproduction of testosterone, and some birth control pills have the added benefit of lowering those levels in your body. It is definitely something you may wish to discuss with your gynecologist. Good luck!

I had to chuckle. My DH is in his 40s and still gets breakouts. Nothing like when he was a teen, but adults aren't immune to acne.

My guess is that it's hormonal and there may be little you can do about it. You can try another routine or adding acne prevention the week you know you'll break out. Also, keep hydrated.

Regarding the migranes, I don't know. I'd talk to your doctor.

Hi C.,
I had the same problem. Shaklee's vitamins helped me tremendously with both the migraines and the breakouts by balancing my hormones.
Let me know if you are interested and I will give you more information.

I'm 33 and still have the same problem with the acne...and I never had it as a teen! Make sure you're using a moisturizer, even if you have oily skin, as drying it out too much can irritate it & make acne worse. Also, I'd recommend oral contraceptives too unless you're opposed to them. They can help a lot with all of the symptoms. Oh, and I'd say any excuse for a massage is a good excuse! You might consider seeing a chiropractor too. Mine works wonders for me every time!
