Performance Anxiety/ Shy Bladder?

Mamas & Papas-

Any tips on how to get over this potty training hump? As home DS uses the potty without prompting. When out, he will ask to go, or go willingly if we prompt him to. In the care of others though, not so much. Either he proves too shy to ask, or if taken by a caregiver, he sometimes withholds, and then wets/ soils himself later.

Thanks in advance,
F. B.

Two of my kids were born with congenital kidney defects, so we have always seen a urologist. Our urologists advice is to tell them to 'blow out their candles' when sitting on the potty. It relaxes the bladder. You can also get a potty timer / potty watch if it is happening a lot. They have them online (try amazon).

Some people have shy bladders. They can't urinate in a public restroom - they do NOT like people to hear them urinate. It's a matter of comfort. Some people don't like others to know they need to go either...

You can help him get over this hurdle - but showing him where the bathrooms are when at a caregiver's before you leave - this will help him KNOW where the bathrooms are so he doesn't have to ask permission to go.

Good luck!
