Penile Adhesions in 10 Month Old

Hello Moms,

I have a son who is 10 months old. He was circumcised when he was a day old. When he was about 6 months old it was concerning me and my husband because it never looked right. His Pediatrician said to not worry about it and that it will go back to normal on it's own. We had to change Pediatricians who we just met today and she said that he has Penile Adhesions. She pushed the skin back forcefully with her hands and there was white discharge and blood caught in where the skin had reattached itself. It was the most awful thing I had ever gone through--to see my son in that much pain. Now that the skin has been pushed back, it's extremely raw and sensitive so I wanted to see what other Moms have done to relieve the pain for their little ones.

Also, have any of you ever experienced this? What did you do to prevent it from happening again? Do I softly pull the skin back every time I give him diaper change so it doesn't reattach?

Thanks so much!

~ B.

I do not think this is unusual. I used a q tip w/ cetaphil at the changing table, did a lttle swipe, and used the tube vaseline (it was just easier) gave it a big ol squirt. I think it healed pretty quick-I think less than 2 weeks.

Hi. The same thing happened with my son. I think you could pull it back once a day and you will be fine, maybe in the bathtub. In about 3 months, everything should be normal again.

This just happened to my son YESTERDAY! It looks horrible this morning but the dr. convinced me it was best to do it at 9 mths than later on. (And I really trust my dr.). So after EVERY diaper change, I pull it down and smother it with Vaseline. He usually cries, but is up and moving around a few seconds later. My dr. suggested to do this for 4 wks. Im also trying to change him more often as the wetness could have been part of the reason of the adhesion. Poor little guys. Hope it goes well.

Dear B.:

The only thing which stopped this from happening to my son was using vaseline after the doctor separated the adhesions. We kept using vaseline for EVER and finally, he outgrew the problem at about age 2.

Best wishes,

Hi B.,
My son also was circumcised and the skin did try to reattach so yes we have been softly pulling the skin back and putting vaseline so that it doesn't stick to anything.
We have been doing this since his 6 month check and he is now almost 8 months. He has healed nicely and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. I think I will continue to pull the skin back till we know for sure it will not attach again.

You might want to put Neosporin or Vaseline on it every diaper change, until it heals. The forceful retracting was unnecessary and usually traumatizes both child and parent too much. If you gently retract it at every bathtime, as he grows the adhesions will go away, without it ever being forcefully done. I'd still do that now, at each bathtime, to prevent it from recurring.

Hi, B.

My son is 4 mos., 1.5 weeks old. He was also circumsised and his skin was reattaching poorly and the Dr. had to, like with your son, forcefully pull it back and it "popped" as Dr. put it and I was instructed to once a day pull the skin back and basically unattatch it. Talk about horrible! He told us to use some Bacitacin Ointment (Longs Drugs) each changing. He said NOT to use the typical triple anti-biotic ointment because it can irritate skin. This stuff seemed to help him heal quicker and now he's all fine. But that week and a half or so of pulling his skin down til came apart and to see it bleed was heart wrenching! The Dr. told us that once a day is good, and to make it about the same time each day. Good luck and I look forward to reading all the responses you'll be getting. I never heard of this type of thing happening, and was reassured that it's fairly common but was never told the name of it. Thanks!

This happened to my nephew. He's 13 now, but he's had to have it pulled apart several times. As far as I understand, there's not a lot that can be done to prevent it. I don't really know a lot about it, but it does happen sometimes and I didn't want you to feel all alone.

Vaseline when you change the diaper and after you pull it back once a day. This is surprisingly common so don't feel alone. Happened with my second son. It should be all healed up within two weeks if you are diligent about pulling it back and vaselining daily.

try doing very softly every diaper change, also try putting some vaseline so it doesn't dry up. also after every bath pull the skin back gently and make sure all the skin folds are dry then apply the vaseline. Basicallly take care of his skin like if he were not circumsised until it heals, and even therafter.

My son (who is 8 now) also had this happen, where the skin reattaches, and actually had to have surgery to separate it again when he was one year old because it could not be pushed back by hand. In a few days it healed and was fine, but be aware that it could reattach again and again, so you have to keep an eye on it. We used Neosporin as a sort of vaseline-like remedy to keep it from sticking and reattaching. They even have a Neosporin that contains a pain med. now, so you might try that, but of course check first with your pediatrician.

Like the others, we were told to pull it back and clean it daily. When they have the open sorelike irritations, we were told to use a polysporin type of ointment, but you may want to call your Pediatrician to confirm what type of treatment they want you to do for it on an ongoing basis. We were told to basically pull back and clean it daily, which he still does in his daily bath to ensure that nothing builds up under the little bit of skin overlap to cause irritation. It was a horrible thing to go through but thankfully it seems to resolve itself with time if you provide the proper treatment to keep it from recurring.

Best of luck to you!

Hi B.,

I'm sorry to hear your son is having such discomfort. My sons luckily had successful circumcisions but I remember how sore they looked and what we did was always put a large amount of vaseline on the tip so his diaper didn't stick. We did this for a really long time until we were sure it healed.

Hope to hear that he's doing well soon.

Vaseline will help it to not stick where it shouldn't. And yes push it back. We are worried about the same thing with our oldest. The pediatrician still says it will be normal later and to push the skin back in the bath since the warm water helps the skin loosen, I guess. And also with each diaper change.... We were a lot better with our second son about the vaseline and pushing the skin back when he was first born and so at least we won't have to go through it again!

When my son was circumcised we used triple antibiotic ointment with a pain reliver in it we used Wallgreens brand and it really seemed to help and we gave him baby tylenol. I would also suggest putting vasaline on the daiper just like you do after the circumcision. I would treat this the same way you treat a circumcision because it's esentally the same thing. Hang in there it should heal quikly if you take care of it, I know seeing your baby in pain is the hardest thing in the world but it will get better, GOOD LUCK.

Hello B., I really sorry that you are going through that. I have 2 boys 1 is circumcised and one is not. I would say yes you should pull the skin back gently and clean it. Justy use warm water NO soap. Thats what I did and still do with my baby who is not circumcised. He is 5 now and i thought there was a problem because it looked raw and was very red. He was 3, but the dr said that it looked very good and asked if I used soap to clean it all the time and I told her no. She told me that I did a good job because the soap will dry it out and cause problems. So just use warm water but do every time you chamge his diaper.

Now he cleans himself and pulles the skin back on his own in the tub. I still check it occasionally to make sure it is clean and looks good.

God bless and I hope everything works out with this situation.

don't pull it back. warm soapy water with a soft cloth to keep it clean at bath time. I used a little neosperon to keep it lubricated so it wouldn't rub against the diaper.

the best you can do is the neosporon and keeping it clean to help it heal.

Hi B.,
My son had something similar. Our pediatrician told us to wipe around it and pull it back with every diaper change. So if he goes to day care make sure they do the same. The inflammation you see now will go down with time, I'm sure you can give him Tylenol if he is still having discomfort. Hope this helps.

Hi B.,

My son was not circumsized, however... It is very important to pull the skin back with every changing and during bath time. My sons skin began to adhere to the head and our Pedi had to forcefully pull on it as well. It was raw and we used aquaphor and within a day it was all better, a very visible difference!

Now, as the skin naturally detaches as it sould, there is occassionally white discharge in there and our Pedi here told me it is normal and this discharge helps the skin to do what it needs to do (I can't remember the technical term for the discharge). So, we don't worry if we see it, I clean it out as best as I can when I do.

Keep some aquaphor or something on the raw area and you should see improvement within the next couple of days. Keep pulling the skin back, keep it clean, and your son should be fine.

hi B.! this is very common because no one tells you. our ped noticed it at my son's 8 week appt. he said to use lots and lots of neosporin and make sure you really pull back on the skin. we used the neosporin with the pain relief and we still monitor it and now just use a & d at his diaper changes as needed and all is well.

I have 3 boys and my third had this. What you need to do is simply pull back on that skin everytime you change his diaper and clean around it. Vasoline is great for easing the pain and helping it to heal correctly. WArm baths also will help in the healing. Good luck!

I would definitely put some vaseline or aquaphor on the area at every diaper changer. It well help lubricate, but also seal the area from urine and sweat which would be painful in a raw sensitive area. And, gently pull it back and clean it at bath time and at diiaper changes.

B.,

At last someone that's also in my world...I have a soon-to-be 4 yr old son. He actually couldn't have a circumcision b/c when he was born it was a bit to the side and having the surgery would have caused problems for him growing up and as an adult.

Basically in order to avoid the white discharge, softly pull the skin back and rinse or dab it, to clean it off. When my son is sick (Asthma) in the winter and we only shower him 4 times a week versus everyday. We use non-scented wipes everyday when he goes to the potty (1 & 2) and since the last occurrence when it become irritated, he has learned to be very clean and he pulls the skin back and keeps it clean. (This might sound a bit like a bad habit waiting to happen but we encourage him to clean himself when he goes to the bathroom and also when he's showering. If he starts getting curious during other times of the day, we discourage him which is helping him know when its ok and when its not.)

Believe it or not, at his young age, he's already learned to be clean and also to make sure he's stretching that skin so he doesn't get an infection from the white discharge which is basically the excess urine that remains under the skin. The Pediatrician should be able to give you some type of vascine-like medication to apply daily to help fit the slight infection.

My husband and I have discussed possibly having him circumcised now that he's a bit older, but finding out that they would have to put him to sleep we decided not to go that route and help him practice cleanliness everyday.

It's a hard thing to learn when this is your 1st baby (my case) and growing up I was never around any children for diaper cleaning and dealing with things like this. I've had to learn by inspecting my son's body and also discussions with his Pediatrician and my husband.

Although your son is a bit young, he'll learn to be clean, too.

Good luck.

Hi, B.. I'm sorry about your son also. There is nothing worse than seeing your baby hurt.
For next time, there are some doctors who use a circumcision ring (Plastibell ring). It looks like clear macaroni noodle with a lip around it (similar to a mushroom cap). After the circumcision, the doctor fits it on and ties it off. As the baby heals, it pushes the ring up, then off when it's healed. There is no maintenance or cleaning. If you get a traditional circumcision, you'll need to pull back and clean and, of course, vasoline. :-)
Hope this helps.

I can relate. My son went through the same thing when he was 2. We'd had 2 other pediatricians who hadn't told us anything then the 1st time we saw our current Dr 2 yrs ago she gave us the news and had to pull back the skin and it bled and he screamed. You are right that you need to pull the skin and clean it every time. He will not like this! It took my son a long time to not freak out when I tried to clean him. He was also older when it happened, your little may get over the memory faster. I recommend putting a little hydrocortisone on it. It has the antibac properties as well as numbing.

How awful! Yes you should softly pull the skin back with every diaper change and thoroughly clean it. Our pediatrician has had us do that from the very early on. In fact, on our 1st visit after the circumcision we hadn't been doing that and our ped showed us that there was some build up in there and told us we need to do that otherwise we wouldn't have known. I'm glad you changed doctors and I hope your son heals quickly! Have you tried using vaseline in the time being while it heals so that he doesn't stick to the diaper? That might help a bit. Take care...
