My son did this same thing and we had to buy Huggies Night time diapers. If he doesn't wear this special night time diaper he will pee through... just a suggestion, but worth a try!
Hi Moms,
My almost 5 month old daughter has just started to pee through her diaper at night. This has been the 3rd time this week. She rolls onto her tummy during the night and the pee goes up her stomach and all over the bed. The diaper is soaked!!! She is a mover during the night so she is everywhere in her crib. During the day she rolls over from her tummy to her back and back to tummy but for some reason she won't roll from her tummy to her back in her crib. She cries to be rolled over. During the night she sleeps. We are very lucky. She goes to bed anywhere between 6 and 8 and sleeps to around 6 or 7!
My question is, why is this happening all of a sudden?! We use the 7th Generation diapers size 2. We love the diapers but I am starting to wonder if anyone else has had this problem before. The diapers still have plenty of room so I don't want to go up a size. I am just nervous for her skin to become irritated and tired of changing the sheets every morning!!!
I thought only boys pee up!!! Any suggestions to why this is happening and what I can do about it would be great. Even with the pee problem she still sleeps until the morning so I really don't know what time of night the leak occurs.
Hi Moms,
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR RESPONSES!!This website is the best! I tried doubling her diaper last night and it worked!!! I will continue to do that until I find the diaper doublers and I also will buy the larger size at night. It was nice to not have to strip her bed this morning and the two diapers didn't seem to bother her!
Thank you again!!!!

I feel you and hope you invested in a mattress protector. Either limit the fluids before bed, adjust the feeding or use the huggies overnights. They work well for my 2 year old. But I dont give her liquids after 8 now.
Good luck mommy.
That's about the same time I had trouble with my kids. You can try a few different things:
* Put on a bigger size diaper only at night
* Buy diaper doublers and put them in at night - look like maxi pads without the backing; they sell them at Jewel but I don't recall finding them at Target/Walmart. They are very reasonably priced. Can combine with the above for extra absorbency and room
* Huggies makes an overnight diaper that is more absorbent. We would use these even on long car rides or days out when we wouldn't be able to change the kids as often.
Good luck!

Hi L.!
THis is STILL an issue for me with my Toddler! - What I found has helped is to buy the diaper 'interts' - they are like Depends/Maxi Pads (LOL!!)- and they help to absord more of the liquid through the night. They are relatively cheap as well - nowhere near the cost of the diapers! You can find them in the same aisle as the Diapers in the store.
Other than this- I would recommend just accepting the sheet changing for a while or you'll make yourself crazy!

My daughter did the same thing. I ended up trying different types of diapers. Each of my 3 children had 3 different types of diapers that worked for them. You might just need to sample and test differents brands. Good luck.
I know you don't want to move up a size, but that is the answer to your problem. Even if the diapers still have plenty of room, they don't have enough surface area to absorb all of the moisture.
Dear L., when my kids were babies I used a thing called a doubler when they went to bed. I know they still have them because my sister uses them with her babies now. Really they look like a sanitary napkin but they are made to put in the diapers and absorb some of that pee so they stay dryer longer. Try them they're great.
We use cloth diapers and never have leaks- maybe you could get a cloth "diaper doubler" and put it in the diaper. Then you would have extra laundry anyway, I guess, but at least it would be controlled. Good luck.
I know you've received a lot of responses, but I just wanted to let you know I had this problem with both my daughters, I used the doublers for awhile, but it's hard to find them so I switched to the Huggies overnights and have never had a leak overnight! They work. I use the size 3 for the little one (since she was about 3 months old) (I found them at Babies R Us) and size 4 for my 2 year old. Both my girls sleep on their tummies so we had the same problem.
Good Luck :)
Try putting plastic pants on over her diaper (I use Gerber brand and got them at Babies R Us). Also try an "overnight" style diaper - I use Huggies - they are extra absorbent. Also, this may sound weird but I read it in Parenting magazine: one mom attached a maxi pad lengthwise across the front waist of her daughter's diaper to catch the extra pee.
When you take the diaper off, is it somewhat rolled at the waist? If so, try placing the "tape" of the diaper on a diagonal (down between the leg and crotch), instead of straight across the waist. That way, when her belly isn't as full from a feeding, the diaper won't be as loose at the top.
If that doesn't help, I use a combo of Huggies Overnight diapers with a Diaper Doubler. My kids sleep 11-12 hours a night too, and this does the trick for us. However, I don't know if the Huggies Overnights come in infant sizes.
Here's my trick for minimizing the chaotic sheet changes at night: Go to Babies R Us and purchase a 2-pack of "Quilted Multi-Use Pad" in the largest size. (I don't know if Target carries them.) After putting on your fitted mattress pad and your crib sheet, lay one of these multi-use pads on the top of the sheet. (It will not cover the entire mattress, but will cover a huge part of it.) Then, put on another crib sheet...then another multi-use pad...then your final sheet. (You'll need 3 crib sheets total.) These multi-use pads are waterproof, so if there is an accident at night, you simply peel off the wet sheet and remove the multi-use pad...and you'll have a fresh, clean sheet already waiting!
When my kids went through these leaking periods I'd just put two diapers on them at night, buy a pack of the next size up to use on top, it worked great for us.
My son is a big fan of peeing out his diapers at night too! Life has been much drier with Huggies Over nights! They start in size 3, I think but are so worth it!
we started using huggies overnights around that time and still do. they're a little pricy, but you only use one a day, so the box of 72 lasts for, well, 72 nights :) you can get them at amazon.com and diapers.com and avoid paying tax (and lugging them around with you and your baby!). good luck!
L., this happened to us with both our boy and girl periodically. Two suggestions:
1.) try putting her in a size three just for sleeping overnight
2.) change her diaper before you go to bed at night (if you think she'll go back to sleep). Both of my kids would stand to have their diaper changed and roll right back over and go to sleep, but sometimes just putting them in a larger size for the night was easiest - especially when their diaper was dry at 10p.m., but a sopping mess at 12 midnight.
good luck,

Yes we've had this happen all of a sudden in the past. I switched to Huggies Overnights....they hold an amazing amount! I have a 3 year old who refuses to potty train and they are still working. To make it worse part of his nighttime routine is a cup of milk before bed!
Hi L.,
I have used Huggies Overnites for both of my kids and they work. I've never had them leak through. I've bought them at both Target and Walmart.

My daughter often peed through her diapers starting about the same age, so we had to switch to Huggies Overnites, which generally work well. My daughter, however is pretty big for her age, however, so she could move up to the size 4 (I believe they only come in size 4 and 5). If you want to stick with the more environmentally friendly diapers, you might try buying the next size up and putting the bigger diaper over the smaller one for nighttime, to catch the "overflow". It is not so much that she is "peeing up", but rather, since she is sleeping on her stomach, gravity is taking all the pee to the front of the diaper, which eventually becomes too saturated and leaks from the pressure of her body.
It is great that she still sleeps through it, but I can believe it would be frustrating to change sheets every day! Hope this is helpful - good luck.
Huggies nighttime diapers worked for me. Maybe try changing her after 4/5 hours of sleep...if she is a heavy sleeper :) lol!
When this happened, I sized up at least for overnight. I also use 7th Gen. Right now I've got my 20-pound daughter in size 4s because she, also an active sleeper, was peeing out every which way if I didn't put her down in a totally dry diaper for naps. Seems big, but it does the trick for us.
this is the classic sign that you need to go up a size in diaper for nighttime. If they are the tiniest bit too short in the front or back then this happens. So go up to size 3 for night time and you'll be back to dry nights.
I have an 8 month old who just recently started to pee through the night. We are also very lucky and she sleeps 10 - 12 hours a night! We found Huggies overnight diapers at Babies R Us and Walmart and that seems to help! Good Luck!
Make sure to change the diaper before he goes to sleep and buying size 3. I swear, my son went straight to a size 3 after a 1; the 2's did the same thing with any brand!!!!
I am not sure how those diapers work but with my daughter, I use Pampers, when she started to sleep on her tummy I started to fold down the top inside to help keep it in her diaper. Sometimes this would still happen though!
Another thing you could possibly do since you are worried about her skin becoming irritated is using Vitamin A&D ointment as a barrier. As for the sheets... I have no clue how to prevent it if the turning the diaper in does not work!
Good luck and blessings to you!
She's probably peeing within half an hour of her last bottle. You can change her at that time. Children pee after they drink. Is she on cereal yet? you could cut down the milk and give an extra ounce of cereal to hold her hunger. Since she's a good sleeper, don't be afraid to change her during the night. You can stick your hand in the diaper and feel before you go to bed and change her then.
we had the same problem. we first tried the doublers but they would get so wet and be stuck to my poor guy in the morning and i just thought they would feel icky (he didn't complain) so we bought the Huggies overnights and they work fine. i could only find them at BRU though in the size 3. walgreens et. al have them but only in the larger sizes.
I'm so glad the doubling-up of diapers worked for you. My daughter went through the same thing at about the same age (she's 11 mos. now), and I couldn't find the Huggies things everyone's talking about. I actually ended up using one of my maxi-pads, putting the sticky side turning out, of course. I also read a GREAT PIECE OF ADVICE in Parenting magazine that I still do...buy a 2nd mattress pad. I put the 1st one on, then a fitted sheet, 2nd one on, then 2nd fitted sheet. This way if she does have an accident of any sort in the middle of the night, I only have to take off the first layer of mattress pad & fitted sheet, and I don't have to worry about changing her crib in the middle of the night.
We use the Huggies overnights, usually I use a size bigger diaper than during the day. It helps for us!
I have 3 kids. Whenever my kids would do that, I knew they needed to move to the next size in diapers. It always helped. You could also change diaper brands. It doesn't hurt to try.
Honestly, go up a bigger size! Our son has almost always worn a size larger diaper at night than what he wears during the day, mostly because he sleeps at least 12-13 hours at night. We've not used the diaper doublers but I have heard good things about those as well. Additionally, even though our son sleeps for such long periods of time he rarely has diaper rash or chafing issues. Like other posters have said, if you're concerned with rash or chafing you can always use a balm/cream/ointment that would serve as a barrier between the skin and the wetness to avoid the issues.
Hi L.,
Have you thought at all about using cloth diapers? We use cloth, but use the 7th gen. ones when we travel. I actually find the all-in-one diapers (BumGenius 3.0) to be more absorbent than the disposables. They're easy to use and one size fits all (they're a bit expensive). The downside is that you have to wash them, but after a while you get used to it. Let me know if you'd like more info. on cloth diapering.

Hi L.,
I always used the Pampers premium or the Huggies Supreme at night & used the regular Huggies or Pampers during the day. It made a difference with mine. Good Luck!!
