Peeing Standing Up - Fort Worth,TX

My son just turned 4 and is still not interested in peeing standing up. My husband doesn't think it is imporant to push the issue but I can't help but wonder if the kids in Pre-K will start to tease him. Should I push the issue or just let him decide to do it in his own time?
Any hints to encourage him or should momma just back off! ;-)

I wouldn't push it. Chances are when he goes to PreK and sees all the other boys standing up -he'll just fall into line and stand up too! If not -no biggie -sooner or later he will do it. I wouldn't worry about him getting teased in PreK for that.

My 12 yr old son still sits down to urinate. I have no problem with it, he prefers it and we don't have "splatter" issues (the area around the toilet really does stay cleaner). And he's never been teased about it, ever.

I wouldn't push him, my son is also almost 4 and just moved up to Pre-K. He pees standing up but his best friend (same age) doesnt. It really isn't a big deal. You could do something fun, try putting Cheerios in the potty for Target Practice.

My husband sits and pees (except for when he is in a hurry or at a restaurant). He was taught that way and i appreciate it...lol! No mess! I don't think he was ever teased...

If your son is developmental appropiate social wise; I would just back off. He will see the other boys standing if not in PK for sure in Kindergarten and will just do what they do. Also know that in the boys bathrooms at the school starting in 1st grade for sure, they have urinals and he will stand to use those. It will only take a couple of trips to the bathroom.

OHHH just enjoy it while you can. I tried to keep my son on the seat as long as I could. Its a MESS once they stand up. You will have to check the seat everytime you sit down. They will pee everywhere. On the seat, on the floor, an the wall.... He is not less of a boy sitting down and he will get up early enough, trust me. Consider yourself LUCKY he wants to sit down!!!! :)

Lots of boys, in Pre-K, still sit and pee.
Its no biggie.

You/Hubby can, in a laid-back way, teach him how to pee standing up... but they will do it, once older and have more coordination or height to reach the toilet standing up.

My dad taught the little boys in my family to pee standing up outside.
They had their "pee rock". They'd go outside and see who could aim the best. It did help an awful lot when it came to "target practice".
My dad also built little stools for them to stand on because it was easier to be a little higher up and point down to get the pee in the toilet as opposed to the back of the toilet seat, etc.
My son will be 15 in a week and he still sits to pee sometimes. So do a lot of men.
Some neighbors bought a lot next to us and built a house. They had open house and I could have fainted! There was a urinal in their very elegant master bathroom. To each his own, I guess.
I don't think you should really push the issue either. If your son is comfortable sitting let him.
And....try getting a pee rock in the yard where your "men" go out to pee.
He'll get the hang of it.

Best wishes!

Start letting him "water" the bushes in your backyard. It'll keep the racoons and possums away. ((Maybe??)) Don't make a big deal of it - - or you might cause some little psyche-damage - - like he won't be able to ever pee in a public restroom. My dad has that problem. His mom made him use a washcloth after every time. So, my dad still prefers to "go" at home near his washcloth. And he's 76!!

Oh, I wish my husband's mother had NEVER taught him to pee standing up. (Or at least done a better job of it.) Your husband has hung out in a lot more men's rooms than you or I so I'm guessing he knows the drill, and if he doesn't think it's a big deal it probably isn't.

I'd "just back off" personally. We had so many fewer messes to clean up when our son (also 4) was still interested in sitting down to go to the bathroom.

I don't know if he became interested by watching the kids in day care or if he thought it was a cool new trick because we let him "sprinkle the trees" one day at the park when we weren't going to make it to a public bathroom in time.

My husband hates the "splash" of a urinal and will choose to sit in a stall anytime it's an option - wouldn't it be nice if we had one, too?
He's 4,

My son is 4 and still pees sitting at home. He will pee standing outside and at school though. When I asked him why he doesn't stand at home he says he's afraid to make a mess. I don't know why he's scared to make a mess. I've never yelled at him for making a mess because he's never peed standing at home. I just figure he'll do it when he's ready. I thought it would bother my husband but it doesn't. He's like me and just figures he'll do it when he wants to. I've never put alot of effort into showing him how it's done because I'm not a guy and don't really know. Maybe I should encourage my husband to work with him and do the whole Cheerios target thing.

Be grateful! My son (also 4) witnessed my B-I-L standing to pee and now he stands to pee. And now there is urine all over my toliet seat and floor on a regular basis. We try to get him to sit so that I don't have a gross mess all the time, but he says he forgets to sit.
Anyway, my husband and a few other men in the family all sit to pee and in the 10 years we've been together I never had to wipe urine, until now! So don't push the issue and count your blessings!
