Hi Moms,

I'm need of some advice please.

I hate to get Dr. specific but have any of you had/have Dr. Nail at Centennial Pediatrics for your children's pediatrician?

I love Dr. Nail to death, I really do, but I am starting to doubt him and wonder if I need to seek a new pediatrician.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and has been seeing Dr. Nail since she was a baby. We've never had issues with him until beginning this year in January. My daughter goes to daycare and she is sick a lot. I understand kids get sick and it's inevitable my children will get sick as well, I accept that. But my daughter isn't sick in the sense of vomiting and that kind of sick. She has a fever nearly every week or every other week, sometimes days at a time. When we go in for sick visits I get the same old line "Well, kids will get sick being in daycare". I know that, I'm not stupid. I will usually call and talk to the nurses and they tell me to wait it out or to come in. If I come in, he always says the same thing and puts her on Omnicef for 10 days. Last Monday she came home early from school for a high fever, around 101ish. She was home for three days. Friday she had another fever, but this time low-grade. Monday, another fever and she has been home all week! My 6 month-old son started getting a bad cough and was rattling when he would breathe, so my husband took them to the Pedi on Saturday and he saw my daughter at the same time. The doctor that day said she "might" have an ear infection and put her on Omnicef. So, she started with the fever again on Monday and by Tuesday her fever was up to 105.5 - now mind you, the nurse has told me that fever needs to get up to 108 before it really causes need to go to the ER - isn;t that near death?!?! We brought her in to see Dr. Nail and he said it was most likely an ear infection. Her ear canals are real narrow and he couldn't see in them well enough to make a firm diagnosis though. But he took her off Omnicef and now she's on Suprax and said if she still has fever by Friday to come back in. Wednesday her fever got as high as 104 and it was 104.5 this morning when she woke up. It broke after some Tylenol and she was fine most of the day but before we put her to bed it was back up to 100.5, so we'll be taking her BACK tomorrow because this is just too freaking unreal.

Are you still with me? Did I make any sense at all? Am I over reacting? I just feel as though her fevers are not being taken seriously enough. This was only one recent example I could think of, it's seriously been ging on all year! I know it's not the school she goes to that makes her sick, no other kid is out as much as she is. But at the same time, I don't really know what it is! I really hate the thought of having to find a new pediatrician but if we have to do it, we will.

Any thoughts are appreciated. And please let me know if I rambled too much and didn't even get my issue across. :-)

Thanks!

-Char

Hi C.,

I just switched for very similar situation....I know kids get sick in group care, but what can I do to increase their immune system...we already were doing Omega 3's, probiotic, vitamin...so what else. Well, I did switch pedi's to Dr. Bain in Frisco. www.healthykidspediatrics.com

Love her and she is more on the preventive side of things...during the peak of flu season...my two (who have been sick since Sept) have not been sick....two months so far and we started seeing her 2.5 months ago. I highly recommend her. SHe is an MD that does encourage some natural remedies.

My child goes to Cent ped... i am so shocked that you think he does not take you seriously. He always takes so much time with my child each time we have seen him. He pays close attention to our conserns and is attentive to my childs needs. When my child stated day care we had similar issues.. he was sick with fevers and colds. I think most moms would agree that when you put your child into a varied germ pool you are going to pick them up and bring them home one way or another. It does get better i promise.. they are tough..

I would probably switch doctors immediately. But that's just me. The 108 degree mark is way to high for my comfort. My daughter's pediatrician wants us to call if the fever is over 102.

Also, giving the same medicine over and over may not be helping as your child might be too accustomed to it.

This does sound unusual. My ped told me that you are not supposed to alternate Tylenol & Motrin anymore...that you're supposed to let the fever fight out the sickness. But that high of fever for that long doesn't sound right.

Every time my son has a fever that persists more than 3 or 4 days (even with Motrin) then my ped wants to check his blood & urine for something more. It doesn't sound like your ped is taking this seriously. You should switch docs immediately. Good luck, & I hope your daughter feels better soon.

I know you must be very tired and frustrated by now. Hang in there. I also have been told by my pediatrician that Tylenol is the most effective way to go and alternating between that and Motrin is not recommended anymore. My 9 month old goes to day care and he has been sick a couple of times, but I don't think it would be normal if he had fever like that all the time. I don't think day care is the cause of the problems you are having. I would definitely go somewhere else and get a second opinion. With the high fevers she has had, I would say it is time to get her some relief. Hope this helps.

I would definetly take them to another pediatrician. If you live in denton I know a couple of great ones. That my three wonderful boys have seen since birth. One is Dr. Schulman off of Bonnie Brae and scripture behind Presbeytian hostpial and the other one is Dr. Amy Adams in front of presbeytian hosptial. Schulman phone number is ###-###-####.

I know it is hard to switch pedi's but sometimes we just have to do it. I just did it b/c my dr. wasn't diagnosing things until the 2nd and 3 rd visit. I would switch quickly. It will be worth it!
