Has anyone had to take their infant to the pediatric gastroenterologist? I have an eight month old who isn't retaining water in her intestines and therefore suffers from extreme constipation. This all started as we explored more and more solid foods. Her ped is concerned enough that we are having to see a specialist - anyone else out there experiencing this? Any insights?

You have several great options that have been offered to you be other moms. My daughter has seen a GI doc since day 10 of life. We see Dr. Katz, he's wonderful. We also see a Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor. She has helped tremendously with my girl's motility. Her name is Dr. McCarty. She is wonderful and is a CHOC doctor with clinics both in Orange and Aliso Viejo.
We saw a Peds GI for a different reason--reflux, but they were great. They knew so much more than our GP doc & really helped. Good luck!
Edward Lawrence is fantastic. He works form Upland to LA. His bed side manner is short, but he is incredibly smart. He came highly recommended by many of our nurses that worked with our daughter in the ICU.
I am a pediatrician at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, we have excellent GI docs here at CHLA. Have your pediatrician refer you, or, depending on your insurance, get a pediatrician there, and have them refer you. Unfortunately, I only see adolescents 12 to 24 years old. First off, I'm sorry for what you are going through. I know things like this can be scary. I wanted to say that I searched for a Pediatric GI about a month ago for my 5 year old daughter and could not find anyone near me who would see a child under the age of 6. The direction I was pointed in was Children's Hospital. In our case we went to San Diego but ended up not having to see the specialist. You could start there, call the Children's hospital in your area and make an appointment or have you tried asking your Ped. for a referral? I assume your Ped told you she isn't retaining water in her intestines? Do we know this for sure? My daughter suffered from chronic/extreme constipation up until a month ago, and it started around the age of 15 mos or so, this too was the time she started solids. Long story short - I didn't catch the initial constipation, this lead to very large/hard and painful bowel movements, because of this, she started the vicious cycle of holding her poop in and we've been on a crazy ride until last month! We ended up seeing a Pediatric Specialist (not a GI specialist) in Murrieta, who seems to know a lot about the GI (Her hubby is a GI Specialist but doesn't see kids). Sorry - long way of telling you to stay on top of it and get help now so it doesn't lead to what my daughter went through.

Yes. I have taken my daighter to a gastro and found the best Dr. I could have hoped for. He is kind, great bed side manner and on key with everything.
