I am needing to take my 3 year old to the dentist but have never used one here in Amarillo since we moved here. He has a cavity I think and it is really hurting him. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with the ones here? Of course our insurance doesn't have any here so it really doesn't matter which one I choose. I will have to pay a little more out of pocket but that is ok. Thanks for your help.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the info. That is exactly where I ended up taking him today before I read your response. They were able to get him in right away. He woke up from his nap screaming and they were the first ones I called. I had seen an ad on PBS for them. I saw Dr. Tinkler. He was very nice. My son is going to end up having surgery in Sept since his tooth was so bad and they will need to put him under. I was very impressed with the office there and with how willing they were to work with us. I will be taking my other son there for work on his teeth (as soon as we recover from this money shocker today !!!!!) At least he is not hurting right now with the medicine they give him, which is wonderful. I felt so bad for the little guy.

I am glad you found someone. For future reference I would stay away from the pediatric dentists on Martin Rd. We went there because they were a little cheaper and I was so frustrated and angry when I left that I would never recommend them. At first they were not going to let me go back with my terrified and in pain little 7 yr old. She had an abscessed tooth and was miserable and so afraid! I had to fight to get back there with her and then while I was back there I heard a nurse yelling at a frightened little 3-4 yr old girl who was crying and saying she was scared. Shortly after that I saw them give her a Valium and she calmed down. As I was leaving, the little girl was brought out and I heard the nurse explaining to the mommy that her little girl had been given something to calm her down. The mother was a little shocked and wondering why she wasn't called back and she was told that parents are never allowed back. I just have a hard time trusting doctors who run their practice without parental involvement. I had already made appointments for my 5 yr old and my 3 yr old before I had a chance to see their practice so before I left I went to the receptionist to ask about being able to go back with the younger kids. She said absolutely not, that I had had my chance to go back and see their practice and that they do not usually even allow that. I tried to explain that my 3 yr old would not go back with them (he has aspergers syndrome) and she said that this is their policy.

We ended up going to the pediatric dentists in Wolflin and loved them! They were everything this other dentist's office was not. I am so glad you went there first!

First of all Welcome to Amarillo! I hope that you like it here. Personally I use Dr. T. Ritchie, he's off of Coulter across from BSA in a Spanish style building. He's great and very personable, but I haven't taken my son to him because my son is only 6 months old. When he is of age that is where I will take him. There is a group of dentists that specialize in children that I've heard great things about. They are strictly pediatric dentists and their office reflects that. They've got TV's with cartoons, play areas, and video games in the waiting room. They are located in the Wolflin Village shopping center off of I-40 and Georgia. The name of the practice is Amarillo Pediatric Dentistry and the phone number is ###-###-####. Hopefully this helps and if you have any other questions about Amarillo and where to go, feel free to email me!

Hey, J..
Just wanted to let you know I had the same problem. I took my daughter to Dr. Metcalf at 45th and Coulter - I think it's Children's Dentistry of Amarillo. He's great, but soooooooo expensive. Our bill was almost $3000! Later, I heard he's the most expensive dentist in town...so we won't be going back. I'm probably going to switch to Dr. Kemp...I've been hearing good things about him.

I take my daughter to Dr. Shane Moore over in the Wolflin Village buildings. Also in that office is Dr. Tinkler who worked on her teeth when Dr. Moore was sick and they both have done a fabulous job and the service was like they actually cared about her and her teeth, not just my pocket book. I had tried taking her to Dr. Metcalf a few years ago over near Walmart on Coulter and he is outrageous! He charges almost double what everyone else charges and I was not impressed with the service (two thumbs down for Metcalf). I highly recommend Moore or Tinkler, both VERY nice dentists and great with kids. My daughter is 6 if you wondered about the age group.
