Pediasure...silly Question.

Since my son is the pickiest. eater. ever... I've started giving him pediasure. He has about 1/2 a bottle per day. He takes daily vitamins as well... but I just now read on the side that you should consult your pediatrician first.

Really? Is that absolutely necessary? I just need this kid to have more of a balanced diet.

I've also tried those V8 fruit blends and my son found them offensive, LOL!!

As long as you are supplementing his diet with these and not replacing it is fine. If he hasn’t been gaining weight or refusing to eat fruits/veggie then there is no harm.

I do not care for the V8 fruit belnds myself ;-)

Does he take a multivitamin? That might be the way to go.
I would call & ask.
To be on the safe side.

Oh--he does take a vitamin. Then I wouldn't give him extra vitamins on top of that. I'd make him a banana-strawberry Greek yogurt smoothie every day!

My daughter subsisted on Pediasure for over a year due to a disability. The only thing I can think of is that some vitamins, A & D, are not water soluble and they stay in the system longer -- your child could get too much of them. It wouldn't hurt to ask, or just make sure you aren't going over 100% on at least those 2 vitamins.

Good luck with your picky eater! :)

Picky does not mean malnourished.

My son since 6 months old on solids, has been a very picky eater. But, he never starves and is very healthy and grows like a weed and is always in the upper 97th+ percentiles for growth.
My son only eats if hungry. Then stops eating when full.
He is a 'grazer.' Which is actually a very healthy way to eat.

Unless your Pediatrician says its a problem, then don't worry.

I think that that is just a disclaimer that they put on there. My daughter is also one of the pickiest eaters ever and the pediasure and vitamins were always a pediatrician recommendation (good luck with me getting them in her though).

You don't say how old your son is.I think you should ask your doctor about this esp since you are also giving him vitamins supplement.I don't know if you can give both at the same time.

My son "was" a very picky eater (I am so happy he eats well now) and he was underweight. It was a struggle for M. to get him to eat anything much. I mentioned this to his pediatrician (I think my son was 13 months old then) and she suggested 1/2 bottle pediasure every day. She asked M. to give it right before bed so that he still gets to eat during the day. I think I gave it to him for couple weeks esp on days he didn't eat well at all and then had been to see his pediatrician again for fever or something. And she asked M. to stop giving it maximum after a week or so. She said she wanted my son to get nutrition from real food. I asked her if I can start him on a multivitamin and she recommended that.

My daughter (almost 3) is super picky, too. She didn't even want the Pediasure. So, I started making her smoothies that she LOVES. Frozen fruit, juice or milk, yogurt, and a baggie of carnation instant breakfast mix. That stuff is chock full of vitamins and minerals and it helps flavor up the smoothie. --you could even mix the V8 into the smoothie instead of juice/milk.
But I always make note, if she's had one of those she won't get her gummy vitamins that day, I think it's overload to have a vitamin drink and then add more vitamins into their little bodies. If my kid ate little better, I wouldn't even give the gummy's.

I don't know if it's necessary to talk to your pediatrician first or not. I know when my son was 1-2, he wouldn't eat much of anything and I was concerned. He was a preemie, so he was little for his age (was wearing 18 month shirts and 12 month shorts at nearly 3 years old). I went ahead and started giving him pediasure, a different flavor every day, to get "something" in him. He did outgrow it. I made sure it was just 1 a day (1/2 in the morning, and then he grazed at mealtimes, then the 2nd half in the evening.....which moved to 1 in the morning, and grazing in the evening too......and by the time he was 2 1/2 years old, he was eating). I did tell his doctor, but it was at a normal well baby checkup and I mentioned it when she asked what he ate. She didn't take issue with it at all.

Well I think depends on how old he is. My pediatrician had me feed my 18 month old and really really picky eater with them. Hers was to put more weight on. I don't think that a child over the age of 2 needs to have a doctor recommend it. Especially for a amount as small as that.

Have you tried making him smoothies is the blender? My daughter loves the home made kind. I don't add any sugar just fruit and vegetables. I think that once she hits age two I'm doing away with the pediasure. Have you read the ingredients? I feel bad for feeding her it. I'm all for the all natural foods.

Vitamins + Pediasure may end up giving too much of certain vitamins that are risky when overdosed. I think I even read somewhere that they shouldn't take vit. A at all.
Bottom line - I would check first with the ped. just to be safe. Sorry :o)
