It is simular to formula so there shouldn't be a problem with them having it. I would water it down or mix it with milk. They could probably use the vitamins from it right now to keep them strong after having the surgery.
My twins had surgery 3 weeks ago and they had to be on a strictly liquid diet for 1 full week and then soft food only for another 2 weeks. They are 13months old. The first week was really rough because they could not drink from a bottle or sippy, only from a regular cup or be syringe fed. (they had their cleft palates repaired). So, the surgical team wrote us a script for pediasure for WIC to make sure they would get the proper nutrition for the time of their restricted diet. The issue now is that they, of course, prefer the pediasure. If I give them whole milk they will only drink a few ounces and then refuse to drink anymore. They will drink half pediasure/half milk or 100% pediasure only. They will still drink water as long as it isnt cold and some sips of juice.
Would you give your 13 month old pediasure to drink in place of whole milk? I check the label, the pediasure has 25% of the DNV of calcium vs. 30% in the whole milk. I am doing the thing now where i'm slowly making it more milk than the pediasure. But seeing as the pediasure has more nutrients than milk I am wondering if I should just let them drink the pediasure. Especially since they cant eat as much regular food as they normally would. I just dont want them to not like milk because it isnt flavored, our oldest son loves milk. What would you do?

My daughter lost weight when she went from nursing to whole milk so the doctor recommended Pediasure. She drank 3 per day at first so she really liked it and must have needed the nutrition. The stuff is EXPENSIVE, but we kept her on it at those 3 a day for about a year. Because she was barely eating (she was full and the P-sure was so easy to eat) we reduced the amount at lunch and dinner until it was zero and she ate more solids and also a tiny bit of milk. Then after a few years of only morning P-sure we actually switched to vanilla flavored Carnation Instant Breakfast in 2% chocolate milk. She liked that a lot too and at age 11 still drinks it every morning. You can make it per the package but again to get her to eat some solids after some time we switched to half a baggie of the Carnation powder in milk. There are many flavors (for a while she liked strawberry in whole milk) but I would stick with the P-sure for a while since it is truly formulated for little kids and only switch to the Carnation at about age 4 or 5. Good luck.

I understand you’re giving them PediaSure to ensure that they are getting enough calories, but really, they are getting their calories from sugars (#2 ingredient in PediaSure) and from fats. Any way you look at it, PediaSure is an over processed, fake-food product.
Of course the kids like the PediaSure; it’s very, very sweet.
Try giving them a homemade protein shake instead. Mix a serving of Rice or whey protein powder with ice, milk, and fresh fruit (you can also add vegetable juice, such as carrot). Add Stevia (don’t use artificial sweeteners) to taste. Blend and serve. Yummy! A lot healthier than PediaSure. They will get better nutrition they can use from a homemade protein shake.
only if it is temporary
keep mixing it and add more milk every 2 or 3 days and less pediasure thats what we did with our oldest, she however got tired of milk and just started drinking water which is wayyyy better for her anyway
My daughter is on Pediasure three times a day, due to "failure to thrive". She will be 5 next month, and therefore looses her WIC, and her insurance will not pay for it, even though the doctor prescribes it, so my doctor told me to switch to buying the Carnation Instant Breakfast, and mix it with whole milk for her, and he said as long as you mix it with whole milk, it is just as good as having the Pediasure. So, if you are worried about them not getting whole milk, but they refuse to drink just plain milk, you may try this, then they are still getting the milk, but it tastes like Pediasure.
Ask your ped. S/he should know.
If they like the Pediasure, let them drink that - it has more healthy stuff in it than just plain cow's milk. Eventually they will get sick of it (my son had a similar situation, and drank it for a long time then switched right over to milk). Definitely let them drink the Pediasure, they are getting all the nutrients they need, especially since they are not eating properly now. Don't think your child will be deprived if not starting cow's milk at this point, as long as they are drinking the Pediasure, they are fine health wise - the time will come when they will want to try the milk (trust me on this), and when you do, I would try to locate a source of raw milk (much healthier than the pasteurized milk at the grocery store).
