Peanut Free Food Ideas for a 16 Month Old

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for peanut-free foods for a 16 month old? My daughter has a severe allergy and I am finding it difficult to find foods that aren't "processed on shared equipment with peanuts" or in "facilities that also process peanuts" etc... So I guess I need to go with more of a "whole foods" approach which is sort of how we eat anyhow, but I feel like she needs more variety and also more fat/calcium/protein rich foods than she currently gets (she eats lots of fruits, veggies, and cereals). Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

Dear M.,

Remember that allergies are linked to the immune system.
I have had severe allergies all my life until I powered my body with fruits and vegetables. In 8 months my thyroid condition DISAPPEARED, at the amazement of my endocrinologist, and my allergies are virtually non existent in which I take no medication AT ALL. It sounds like you are a a very dedicated and health conscious mother. That's great she's eating fruits and vegetables, but she needs a tremendous amount to heal that peanut allergy. Try Juice Plus which is 17 fruits and vegetables in gummy, chewable, or capsule form. It's only $22.75/month for her. $41.75/month for you. My doctor recommends it and it is what turned my life around. It was featured as a powerful immune enhancer on "The Doctors" show by Dr. Jim Sears. Dr. Richard Dubois from the Center of Disease Control is another huge advocate. Please see my website at kguestsharesjuiceplus.com. Blessings, K. Guest

I dont think she shops at a whole foods store... By now she knows what brands to buy that are peanut (and processed in a plant that has peanuts) free...

Try hemp seed as an alternative to peanuts. New Chapter (look for them on-line) has fantastic products that are free from chemicals and fillers. Most soy products have been bathed in hexane - which is similar to gasoline. It's toxic. Avoid soy products whenever possible - especially for boys.

My son, now almost 5, was diagnosed with peanut and tree nut allergies at age 2. His allergist strongly encouraged us to join the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) which is the official support for parents of children with these allergies. They send out a newsletter with updates and recipes and also allergy alerts for foods that change and suddenly include allergens in their ingredients (which can happen overnight). It also has resources like cookbooks you can buy online I believe.
We are also a whole foods family and shop mostly at Sprouts and Whole Foods Market. It takes a lot of diligence, but we've been able to do it for years now.
As far as brand names, we've found lots of Cascadian Farms cereals, granola bars that don't have nuts. Enjoy Life is another brand that is an allergen free company. They have a no nuts trail mix.
Also, from what our allergist has said, you must avoid all tree nuts as well as peanuts because of cross-contamination.
Feel free to contact me for more information, advice. Hope it's been helpful so far.

HI M.- I understand all too well what you are dealing with. Our daughter is 8 and we have known about her allergy since she was 2. There is an allergy group here in az that has members all over via online access. I would love to share the info with you as an added resource if you would like. We have members that are all over the country.
There are tons of foods out there that we have found safe for our daughter and she does not feel deprived at all. I will get a list going and get them to you. I will look in our pantry and start from there:)
I would suggest when you have time to go to whole foods alone and just read, and read and read labels as you go up and down the aisles so you can get a better idea of what is out there for her.
When did you find out about your daughters allergy?
Talk soon,
D.

We give our son a lot of plain yogurt for fat/calcium/protein - it is super-healthy!! And it's also easy to make (let me know if you need a recipe). I sometimes add frozen fruit (thawed, or I wait for it to thaw) or fresh fruit or other additions (raisins, raw oatmeal, etc.) for variety. Good luck!!
