Hi All~

After reading the request about eggs, it got me thinking about peanut butter. What's the recommended age for serving it? My daughter is almost 2 and she's had it here and there (like a peanut butter cookie once) but I do not give it to her at all yet. My son, who's 4 just started eating it just this past year but it was due to the fact that he NEVER wanted to eat any type of sandwich. Now of course he loves PB&J! Thanks :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks for all the responses! After reading through, I'm going to wait until she's 2 to introduce peanut butter & I'll keep my fingers crossed that she has no reaction! Thanks for all the information! :) K.

Two is when they can have it. Same with shellfish, but if she didnt have any reaction to peanuts before, it should be no problem. From what I hear, if they have an allergy, it is pretty severe.

I would wait until age 2. And I would watch what kind of peanut butter you buy. Most are filled with hydrogenated oils and sugar which are not good to eat. Look at the ingrediants for one with only peanuts. They do have to be stirred up good when you bring them home than I recommend putting them in the fridge it keeps better and you don't have to keep stirring it up. And your kids won't get hooked on the sugar and oil peanut butters.

I just went to my doctor yesterday for my daughters one year check up and he said that it is recommended no peanut butter until the age of two. He said it takes a couple exposures to have an allergic reaction and before the age of two they have less ability to deal with the antigens in the peanut butter.

My allergist suggested that children not have it until after 3years of age. My children's doctor is a bit more flexible and he said generally it is 3 years of age, but if they have had it in the past a few times not to worry, but I have food allergies so I am waiting until after age 3.

Hope this helps.

Well I was getting peanut butter on my WIC for myself while I was nursing but asoon as stopped nursing they quit giving it out, i think for the kids they give it at age 3 not before due to choking. this is what they told me at the health department when i asked then when we'll start getting it again.

My pediatrician said not until 3- you don't want to jump into something that will actually trigger the allergy if they may outgrow it first. He has 2 sons that are severely allergic to peanuts so he is more cautious-but even everything I have seen in print says 2+ so I have waited.
Good luck!

K., I'll put in my two-cents about your 4-yr-old too. Make sure he will eat some other kind of sandwich before he goes to Kindergarten. Most schools in my area are banning peanut butter because of the rise in nut allergies. One mother told me about Sunbutter (that's the brand name), which is made from sunflower seeds instead of peanuts, that fits the school's criteria of staying a nut-free zone. It is found on the shelf next to the peanut butter (pretty ironic!) at Meijer. Price is on par with high-end natural peanut butters. Haven't tried it yet 'cause my guy hasn't asked for PBandJ for a long time, but worth checking out for a rabid PB fan.

The recommended age is 2. I highly suggest waiting until then, as many children are allergic to peanuts.

Hi K.,

If you have a history of peanut allergies in your family, I would stay away from it until she is 3 years old. If no peanut allergies, I would try her now. If you are worried, bring a peanut butter sandwich to a park close to a hospital. That is what my ped advised. If she has had peanut butter cookies in the past I would say it looks as if she would do fine. I gave my daughter peanut butter at 15 months old. I am glad I did since she is extremely picky and she actually likes peanut butter.

Hope this helps,
M.

Well you can give the child peanut butter at the age of 10 months to 1yrs old and up, I say that because thats the age you can pretty much train your child to try different foods and plus W.I.C say so if you get W.I.C. coupons they insist on the parents to give your children peanut butter its on your W.I.C Coupons to buy peanut butter and eggs as well. Its healthy for them.

From what my Doc has told me, you can give peanut butter by age one, unless there is a family history then you should wait until age three.
And I also saw a health TV show that said there is some new study out there that said unless there is a family history of allergies, you can give them any food at any time once as they start solids between 4-6 months.
Unfortunately everyone on this subject has a different opinion, even in the medical community. I waited until my son was one, but I think that if you were to give it to her now then she’d be OK, especially since she’s already had some, but I’m not a doctor. But regardless of when you give your daughter peanut butter, only give her a little at first and watch her closely for any allergy signs.

I started peanut butter at around 10 months for all my kids. We never had any allergies to it run in the family. I started with a thing layer on a cracker. Then just put a little more on after they got the hang of it. Never had a problem. Plus WIC does recommend it for part of a childs food groups. ( i forget which one) Alot of kids don't get the servings they should from certain food groups and this is one of them.

Peanut butter for an almost 2 year old is fine, especially if she has had a little here and there. My daughter will be 2 next month and I make her peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on a regular (not daily) basis. I started that after she was 18 mos old. She will probably be fine.

K.,
I guess i am a bit "old fashioned", but my kids all had p.b very young.... also if you have already given p.b cookies, i would say you should be ok, although i am not a doc...
My gma used to tell me "we did this and that when ur mom/dad were young and they are fine now soooo...." lol!!! so i went with gma... if it was good for them it was good for my kids..
by the way they are now 7 10 15 and 17.. and are all very healthy...
good luck

My year old son was given peanut butter once by my husband when he was 10 month's old. He was fine but I was paranoid to give him any more. When he went in for his year doctor visit I discussed this with his doctor and he said he is fine to consume peanut butter, due to the fact that he had no initial reaction and that we have no peanut allerigies in our family's. I would guess that if your daughter has eaten peanutbutter cookies she is probaly safe. People with peanut allergies are very sensitive to the nut and usually cannot tolerate any peanuts...good luck.

Peanut butter is fine once your child has turned one. If your family has a history of peanut allergies, however, pediatricians recommend waiting until your child is three (if at all). Hope that helps!
